Right now I'm playing as Korean and I've colonized Siberia, Australia, Alaska, and California. I'm starting to get into Indonesia but now I'm wondering since there's Portugual in the Philippines I kinda wanted to become it's protecterate. My neighbours are kind of scary like next door Russia and Timurids. Although I'm allied with Portugal and England and they're both allied with Russia. I also think becoming a protecterate is unnecessary too help plz.

Becoming a protectorate is fantastic. You become immune to coalitions, will be defended by your overlord and get a 20% tech reduction.

You lose 50% of your trade power to them and can no longer do certain diplomatic actions, but you can still declare war and release vassals.

The moment you accept protectorate status, you will lose all your current vassals. Remember this well as the game does not tell you.

Also, protecterates are basically independent with more benefits than disadvantages?
The biggest benefits are the immunity to coalitions and tech discount but the biggest disadvantage is not being able to force vassalage countries, not being able to sell provinces and especially not being able to get military access if they don´t like your overlord. In short a protectorate is a “vassal” that pays the overlord with trade power but unlike “regular” vassals you won´t join your overlords wars and you can declare war to whomever you please.

if you are powerful enough to be colonizing all these lands, you should be powerful enough to remain a non subject nation, I mean, god, don't become someone's bitch.

It's more of 'abusing a game mechanic' then 'becoming a bitch'. The biggest point is that you become immune to coalitions, which means you can expand rapidly whilst ignoring AE. It's (after DDRJake's renewed success) the new basic strategy for ROTW WCs.

One funny thing I found was that being someones protectorate loses you 50% of your trade power but if you acquire somone elses protectorate by annexing them you stop giving your overlord your trade power.

requesting protectorate will ditch all your subjects. It says so quite clearly in the tooltip.. The idea of requesting protectorate is to conquer any province near a western/islamitic/eastern country and ask for it. Or you can attack an OPM like the knights, or small countries like Najd and 100% occupy them and then as for become protectorate in peace deal (under offer)
