Many of us have their issues with colonial nations in the Conquest of Paradise. Some of these issues are being addressed in the new patch, some of them will be (hopefully) addressed at some point.

There is one thing though that I have not seen mentioned here, and that is the colonial nations getting the strategic goods bonus. I mean, historically they were not allowed to trade with anybody but their overlord, so how on earth can they get a trading bonus? Am I the only one who thinks that this bonus should be transferred to the overlord?

The colonial nations' Papal Influence is being cut down, so may be it would be a good idea to give the strategic bonus back to the overlord too? It's just not as much fun conquering the paradise without all that nice cocoa, sugar, tobacco, etc.

Good idea. The colonial nations should never be too much of an obstacle in the expanison of your empire, and taking over production bonuses from the empire when they become a colony is kinda... adverse.

Is it actually the case they are taking the bonus away from their overlords? In my current Castile game, I have the tobacco bonus. I have three colonial nation vassals and no directly-owned colonial provinces. I can check when I get home, but I really don't think I directly own any tobacco province.

I am 100% sure that my Spanish Brazil has the naval supplies bonus which I would really use myself. I do get the sugar bonus, though. Not sure how that works exactly.

You get a trading bonus. Production bonus is for production, which gives 10% boost. Strategic goods is from trading, and your colonies give you trade power. Hence, in your game, you probably have sufficent trade power to control enough of the strategic good to get the bonuses.

Increasing tariffs over 50% should also increase the trade power % transferred to the overlord, so that you can get a hold on the strategic bonus but also risk the colony revolting because of liberty desire.

So it is possible to get the strategic bonus. But still, I think that should come naturally, without doing anything. The colonies weren't allowed to trade on their own, so why are they getting the trading bonus?

The reality of what royal ordinances proclaimed vs the historical reality however may justify it somewhat. A basic guide line is: the more laws and regulations against something (and its frequent reïteration), the more proof it isn't working out. The amount of corruption and smuggling that plagued the New-Old World relation definitely allow for some room to justify certain modifiers. The mother nations however deserve their fair share of that pie as well.

Perhaps shared? The mother nation enjoying somewhat bigger benefits than the colonial underlings?
