I don't know how that speaks volumes of the relative strength of Germany.

Because Germany was able to compete with an alliance of the four next strongest powers over a period of four years...?

Obviously Germany could not hope to match the combined industrial output of the Allies. Once efforts to secure a quick victory faded then Germany was doomed to defeat. However such was the strength of German industry that it was able to sustain a massive war machine, in the face of overwhelming adversity, for almost four years.

The United States didn't win the war. Britain's navy won the war through their naval blockade which starved the Germans into defeat.
Remember that the Germans were still in France at the armistace.

The Navy thing is relevant the second thing is not. German strategy was geared toward attrition. They reckoned they could win a war of attrition against both Britain and France. When the US entered the strategy became useless. That's why they made the last desperate thrust in 1918. It was either win now (which was unlikely) or certainly lose. They were beat and they knew it.

Though usually when someone says the "US won WWI" they don't mean in it a military sense. All the European powers came out of the war weaker then when they went in. Nobody made a net gain. Yeah sure, Britain got a few more colonies and France got her Rhine territories back, but cost was so high it was not worth it. In a sense, they never really recovered. Only the non-European powers of Japan and the US came out ahead.

Heh. North Korea was able to compete for about that long against some the worlds strongest powers. That doesn't say volumes about North Korea. And Germany only competed with Russia for 3 years and the US for less then a year.

Anyways this discussion is going way OT, so let's get back to the original topic, the balance of power in the game for Britain vs other nations.

Haha, Sorry about that OHgamer, but I'm sure you can admit it is an interesting subject. Anyway, Victoria does not (unless you play the 1914 scenario) have scripted events for the First World War, so in all likely hood Britain would remain top dog for a few more years (I promise I won't divert after this ohgamer), but according to Kennedy's "Rise and Fall of the G P", the US' economy was growing so strong that by 1926 it would have outstripped the Europeans, WWI brought this up by a few years. So if an American player or an AI is good, the US will outstrip the Brits. Therefore, Britain's asset is high prestige (it still remains to a level in 2007) and must always try to advance industry when possible. But in answer to the original statement, India does give a somewhat uneven handed pro towards Britain, but this is set properly by VIP when India becomes British India and is a satellite/dominion of Britain. Thus it gives Germany and the US a great chance to win over Britain.

I don't have a problem with Britian's massive prestige - which in reality the 'Empire on which the Sun Never Sets' did give it. I just found it curious that it should end up with a far larger industrial score than the US (and than I could manage as Austria with a full citizenship party in power). I usually don't let Germany form if I'm playing a European power, but will in my next game as Russia, so it will be interesting to see how the relative industrial scores for Britian, Germany and the US end up.
