"Shortcuts" in research

I dreamt about playing HOI IV tonight and in the dream there were shortcuts available in the research trees.

Now I'm looking at this old screen shot and what I see suggests what I dreamt might be real.

If I look between the Panzer IV and the Tiger there is a "chain" suggesting the two techs are linked somehow. If it would be as I dreamt, that would mean that if I have researched the Panzer IV I can go directly for the Tiger and vice versa. I wonder if it would work this way or if it means the Panzer IV is an aditional requirement for the Tiger, although that doesn't make as much sense considering there is no way to determine direction on that link.

Somewhere long ago in a DD or some other post the Devs probably podcat foresaw the future and made the game as was in your dream ... Yes its a research link so you can research the Tiger if you have the PzIV even if you havnt researched the Grosstractor.

That was kind of harsh.

I am glad that the chain means that. I don't want to have to research heavy tanks unless absolutely necessary.

I assume though it's cheaper to go from PzIV to the Tiger then to research both the Grosstractor and then Tiger?
