Did anyone else notice that the new Escort fighters have a max range 200 less than a same generation Tac Bomber? And half the range of a Strat? They are, however, longer range than a MR Ftr.

I think I liked it better the old way, but I was apparently a minority in that.

OTOH, it does present an interesting strategic choice - use strats w/o escorts like the Americans did, or limit them to less than half their potential range by supplying escorts.

Of course, I could just not build them at all.

I think the new system makes perfect sense. The escort's range is determined by the fighters, it's not a function of the unit it's protecting.

P-47's could only go X distance, whether they were protecting B-17s or B-54s :p

I miss the old escortfighters of HOI2...
Escorts don't hamper the range of bombers.
They hamper the range bombers can be escorted.
At least they can give partial cover up to a certain distance from the target.

The new system seems indeed more sensible, the range of the scort fighters being the limiting factor, independent from the bomber.

Does anyone know why the developers choose not to allow escort fighter for CAS crafts? I mean it sure was a deliberate decision, but I just wonder why....

i think it was the design in doomsday 1.0-1.1. escorts gave -150 range, which would cause a range of 50 for escorted cas. and it was forgotten to implement in 1.2. so simply edit the first line in the cas.txt like it is written in the tac.txt
(something like allowed_brigade=escort). will work only in a new game, but worked for me in 1.1 (and the ai is also building escorted cas)

so it seems that regular fighters are more and more usefull in a versatile role as esc. fighter - air superiority fighter - interdiction or groundattack fighter.

defensive priority = interceptor,
offense priority = regular fighter, which is far more flexible,

No, it's WAD that they can't be attached to CAS, it wasn't WAD that they could be attached before.

after the xp-disaster i came to the conclusion that "WAD" should be used not so often to explain the game design.
If it is WAD, than the design is very bad, because if i had escort fighters, iw ould escort my cas (because like the name say's: "ESCORT" fighters).
why not change it,if you could

But you can easily excort your CAS, you just can't use escort fighters for that.
It does make some sense, tacs and strats are more similar in their operation than CAS and tacs are.
And AFAIk what is escort fighters in DD was never actually used for escorting CAS.

i used to escort my cas with escort fighters after a little bit of modding, and the ai did it too.

but the main problem is the "stupid" design of aircraft in general.
there was no interceptor/fighter/escort fighter in ww2. it was more or less a system of short-range/medium-range/long range fighters.
for example the p51 was used as interceptor, "fighter" and as longe range escort.
in the battle of britain, germany escortet there he111 with Me109's (now fighter/interceptors). the game escort's (Bf 110) where no escorts, this where heavy fighters with good ground attack capability (like englisch moskito) and heavy armament which was used against heavy bombers (interceptor).
when i look into the game, there are different models of the Me 109 fitting in the german tech tree. one is interceptor, one fighter. why should one model be 25% better against bombers???
same goes for bombers, there where no special naval bombers. it would make more sense to devide into short range/med range/long range or light/medium/heavy bombers.

Agreed... it was standard doctrine to use Me109's to escort Ju87's.

Me110's were intended to be used to escort Ju88's and Dorniers... although they proved so ineffective at this role that they were withdrawn from escort duty.

I couldn't agree more. I play a lot of MP and there are places where navs/tacs can raid convoys and bomb fleets that you can no longer protect.

I really don't care if my escort fighters are called ME109, ME110 or Pink elephant. I just want attach them as brigade to my CAS so I don't have to use separate wing for air superiority or lose some CAS from my bomber wing.
