Its a bug, I think. I've run into situations where the game is telling me I have insufficient air cover over a sector, but when I switch to viewing the air map, the sector isn't red, or yellow, but the usual "nobody has any planes here" gray. Except, of course, there are planes in that sector. I find that saving and reloading usually clears this one up.

@Davy D ,

I am not aware of any shortcut key that toggles air color on and off.

If it is a sea region and you are using carrier planes only, then you will have temporary "zero" (gray color) air supremacy as carrier planes cannot fly at night.

It is also possible to have too few planes with such bad mission efficiency that they, effectively, add no air superiority to the region. In those rare situations, the color won't change.

This is usually the result of flying a small number of short range planes on air superiority in places like the Far East while the enemy has control of some ground provinces in the area.

I am so sorry, I wasn't clear enough in my first post. It is a loaded save game and I definitely have sufficient planes (200 or more) in the region to give me a color. I was just wondering if it is a bug or that I have been leaning on my keyboard and pushed a toggle button that I am not aware off.

It is that you just loaded. Give it a few ticks and it would work itself out.

Edit: Though there is a bug on a new game if you view the naval screen and then the air screen that removes all the colors and gives a nice view of the trees. I have only been able to remove it through a reload.

They should have a mission-task to fly every time; in my understanding interception-missions do not provide air-superiority if they have no targets to fight ( i.e. enemy bombers, transports ) in their air-zone.

Interception missions never provide superiority. They always take some fuel, even if they are not engaging a target. If at war they will show green air if no target is present. They are just more fuel efficient and often more effective depending on doctrines than air superiority missions if you just want to down enemy bombers, escort fighters, and CAS. Note that they only engage fighters if an enemy ground mission is active.
