Sometimes I get a few minutes, sometimes over an hour, but inevitably, when I play EUIV, I will experience short hiccup accompanied by a black screen, after which the game will run normally until the next hiccup, but without any audio until I restart. For every black screen I get, I find one "display driver nvidiasomething has stopped responding and has recovered" message waiting for me on exit.

Now, I'll get this display driver problem for most games that I run, but the sound issue is unique to EUIV - and oddly enough, only when I play in my dorm. When I was home from university for Christmas, I still encountered the black screens, but with much lower frequency, and never with associated audio loss. This leads me to believe that overheating may be the issue, at least as far as EUIV is concerned, as my parents' house is in a cold area (by California standards anyway) and has a heating issue, while my dorm has functional automatic heating. I don't think the temperature difference could be any more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit (and probably not that much), and it seems odd that such a small difference could have such a major effect on my computer. However, there is no other difference between the environment for my computer at uni and my computer at home, so I'm at a loss as to what else it could be.

You never know, though, so here I am, fishing for advice or similar stories. Dxdiag log is at the bottom of the post.

EDIT: It's also impossible for me to exit from a running game without a total freezeup, requiring use of the task manager to close EUIV. It works fine closing the game from the main menu, though.
EDIT-edit: Scratch that, I get the crash even when quitting from the main menu.

The exact error message would be useful, thanks.

What anti-virus software do you use?

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU) 1/ before starting the game up and 2/ after say 20 minutes' play. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install GPU-Zand CPU-Z, or SPEEDFAN.

But the crashing video card is a concern - IME that usually means a hardware fault in the video card. Try a video driver update

Vista 32bit http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/71701
Vista 64bit http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/71704

But if that doesn't help I'd lean to a hardware GPU fault.

Your dxdiag lists two sound devices. A SoundMAX and an NVidia one. To which is your audio connected ?

As for the video driver reboots. That's the Windows kernel assuming the driver has crashed. As of Vista, the kernel pings the driver periodically, and expects a response within a predetermined amount of milliseconds. If the driver doesn't respond in time, the kernel assumes the driver has crashed, and reboots it.

It is not uncommon that video drivers have hiccups from time to time. Be it to prevent overheating, delays in PCIe bus access or whatever. That doesn't automatically mean the driver has crashed and stopped working. The screen going to black is probably caused by the driver getting unloaded from memoy, and then restarting. It probably flips to black when it's starting up again, and probably starts displaying frames again after it has fully initialised again.

A similar 'feature' was introduced in Windows XP SP3 for regular applications. Those, too, are periodically pinged by the kernel. If the application doesn't respond in time, the kernel assumes the app has crashed, and you see the "this application has stopped working" error. Sometimes, apps simply need more time to complete a task than the maximum ping response time, but that does not mean that they've crashed.

I don't know which device my audio is connected to, or how to check.

And I will get to reporting specific temps with speedfan, but classes have just started again, and I'm often distracted. In my experience, however, all games, even ones you could easily run on a phone, put my GPU up to at least 65-70C. I did have serious overheating issues with this rig in the past, but I have since fixed them, and replaced the old card I had during those troubles. I take it that it's higher than usual, but the highest I will ever reach, even when playing a GPU-intensive game for a long time, is the mid-upper 70s.

I know about the ping issue (or at least something like it), and have edited timeout detection up a few seconds - most sources that cite this problem say that that's usually enough to solve your problems, if this was in fact the cause.

An interesting note about the audio loss - I've taken to using iTunes when the in-game audio fails, but if I get the same type of hiccup a second time, iTunes loses its audio capacities as well. I can select songs and hit play or pause, but no matter what I do, the files never play, and just sit at whatever time I leave them. Like EUIV, I have to restart the program for the audio to be fixed. In fact, I recall odd audio issues with Youtube when using for music alongside EUIV, and I suspect it's part of this same problem.

Well, do you have external speakers or headphones connected to the system? If so are they plugged into the nVidia or the Soundmax socket?

I'd guess it's the nVidia as that's the default sound output device, and that also may explain why your video crashes affect sound too.

EU4 pushes the video card harder than almost any other game of its era. Not because of detailed graphics or high resolutions, but because it offloads as much work as possible onto the video processor, to free up the main CPU to deal with the vast amount of data the game uses to model history. So if you have other games causing high-ish heat, it is quite likely EU4 could tip it over the edge. If you are getting, say, 80c or more you really need to get that fixed - check for broken fans, or dust or office items blocking vents, and so on. You can use Speedfan that I linked above to speed up the fans and so get more cooling.
