Okay I have checked and it seems that there is no shore bombardment for man-of war, frigates, commercial raiders, Ironclads, or moniters. Now the last I wouldn't care but I have watched the movies. Horacio Hornblower, John Paul Jones, and the British navy in the war of 1812, not to mention Henry Morgan, all had the ability to shore bombard.

So what am I missing in my research??? That is the only place I can figure to find it. The ability that is. I was fighting Spain on land and would have loved to have my navy support the ground troops. I had made the assumption that the ability would have kicked in when I was at war. This is what I thought when reading the VickyWiki manual.

Can someone help? I am playing Ricky as the USA. fully up to date as of 1 July, 2008.

Yes, they do have shore bombardment capabilities. Look in the db/units folder at the individual ship types. The only thing is, they have very small bombardment values. One MoW as like .005 bombardment, so it takes a significant fleet size to see an actual impact. Only the later ship models have significant shore bombardment abilities.

They could bombard the shore, that is correct. And perhaps some ports. But early 19th century ships did not have the firepower to shoot at anything behind the coastline. Victoria uses a province system wherein combat happens in a province that is usually several dozens of kilometers wide.

The confusion may arise from the fact that there is no shore bombardment mission, ships will automatically support troops when they are anchored outside the province where the fighting takes place, you don't have to order them to do it.

What kind of shore bombardment value would one receive if he were to have 24 Yamato-class BB ships on the sea zone next to a battle, in the Vicky era? Let's say they're all at point blank range, as the enemy fights right on the coast. Would a single, motivated division be able to rout an entire corps? Just curious...

LOL! Good point. Probably one colonial warrior with axe will do!

Anyway back to the original question.

Like pointed above. You cant compare ships from Age of Sail and Steam and preWW2 era. During Age of Sail penetrating hull of opposing ship was hard enough even with ships fighting side by side at 100m range or something like that. If shells from AoS has no penetrating power against wooden hulls how effective you want them to be against shore targets? Probably with 250 M-o-W you could inflict some damage against shore targets, but before you build them you will be in steam era. :)

Monitors and Ironclads thats another matter (with 20 Ironclads opponent gets IIRC -27.00 penalty). Decent guns but with very little destructive power - early HE shells carried tiny ammount of explosives when compared to shells of pre-dreadnoughts or dreadnoughts, protected cruisers and so on. Also monitors and ironclads suffered from very short range gunnery (just ike AoS ships). Hitting targets over 1000m was pure lottery - unless target was stationary and big like barn doors if you know what I mean. :)

With introduction of protected cruisers & pre-dreadnoughts shore bombardement really was born. Before that it was just chaos :D.

And later with 10 modern BBs you will wipe out entire legions.
