I have yet to make the shore bombardment work in v1.06 when invading with land forces. It is a bit puzzling as the manual says this is the only time you can use this feature. Can anyone offer any help on this?

Each Battleship takes away 2 org from the opposing units. This shows in the battle view with a tooltip pop up. If you don't have 1.06, you can't see the tool tip pop up.

Thanks, I am using v1.06 but did not realise it was automatic and have not noticed the results before, will check the next time I invade.

I use this topic for my problem. If every battleship and only battelships gave a +2% support , why cruisers had a shore bombardment value

I think 1.05a added a measureable value for crusiers. I think 1.06 eliminated cruiser support or at least there is no tool tip showing it. One could run a quick experiment to test if CAs make a difference to a land battle's org.

I have often wondered why the naval units of the invasion fleet do not take damage from the coastal fortifications. If you have read much about coastal defense up until the mid 40’s, it mainly consisted of costal artillery, such as large caliber naval guns. These should inflict some damage on ships, especially a transport pure force.

The effects of your shorebombardment shows up in the statistics of the enemy units' efficiency, labeled 'Shorbombardment' (very neat...).

It seems that all other shorebombardment than from BB was dropped in 1.06, which is a shame since as late as 1.05 also DDs got a small bombardment value.

That thing is historical so I don't know why it was dropped. But I guess some players may have whined that it made UK too powerfull.

Confused

This is precisely the type of thing that makes me most frustrated with HOI. It is a very good game, potentially a great game, but it has so many unknowns. Why one has to wonder whether the listed shore bombardment values for ships actually have an effect on combat or whether only the listed values for battleships work is beyond me. This type of thing is not an isolated incident and makes it hard for me to play the game. At this point I have concluded that HOI is really best suited for people willing to invest a significant amount of time to see how the game is really working, not taking the game at face value and not assuming consistency between what is reported on the screen (e.g., bombardment values) and what the game system actually does. I hope that HOI II fixes these kinds of problems.

Of course if the game didn't have so much potential, I wouldn't care ...

I do agree with you, in fact I used the same words you did when I first started playing, you do have to invest a whole bunch of time and investigate by trial and error what the cause and effect is in the game. It also does not help that the manual is completly hopeless. They could have done away with the manaul and used that money to get the game right at the first attempt?
