Hello all, I've been a lurker here for some time, and enjoyed many of the AARs here. Over the next few days I really need a distraction so I thought I'd have a shot at an AAR of my own.

Using HttT 4.0c with the whole world mod.

Nation: Randomly Selected Japanese O/TPM
Starting: 1399
Difficulty: Hard
Lucky nations: Random
Everything else: Default
Rules: No reloads (unless I accidentally click the wrong option or make some other brain addled mistake that I really shouldn't have), No save edits.

Style: um... we'll have to see

Goals: Unify Japan. Beyond that... either quit or whatever takes my fancy or perhaps what is voted for :)

Warning:
1) I have no experience other than an hour messing around of the WWM mod, but have plenty at EUIII and HttT in general.

2) I am not at all an expert on Japanese culture, any reference to it will be an attempt to add flavour, but by no means accurate

Now... off to select that nation and starting screenies.

Awa - Japan - 1399

Takeda Yukihito rules over the province of Awa on the island of Shikoku in feudal Japan.
A reasonably competant man, his education and the strict upbringing of young aristocrats has left its mark upon him: honourable to a fault and so upright youd think he needed a poker removed. This leads to a certain lack of imagination on the field of battle, but his bravery can inspire his men to some achievments.

To start his reign he strips some disloyal vassals of their rights, and rather than fall on their sword they rise in rebelion... no mercy is shown; Yukihito decapitates the leaders himself and demands their families try redeem honour with their own deaths.

Settsu controll the main island side of the crossing between it and Shikoku, whilst Awa controll the Shikoku side. Yukihito's senior retainers advise him to foster good relations with them both for economic and military reasons, and suggest he take a bride from amongst them.

The island trade centre of So refuses access to Awa's merchants. Yukihito doesnt care a great deal, the merchant class are as much scum as the average peasant in his eyes. He does however decide that So have besmirched his honour, so he returns their messenger... well part of him. He can deal with So later.

Always need to get one up on the inlaws... plus, should they fail to stop Awa's enemies crossing their land controll of the straights is a necessity. This can however wait for now, there are more imediate threats.

Tosa are claiming that a certain village owes homage to them, not to us. This is clearly just bluster to cover up the fact that large swathes of their land were taken from our clan. something must be done.

Yukihito is alarmed to discover that Tosa have formed an alliance with Iyo the third domain on Shikoku, and steps are taken to swell the Awa force on a temporary basis from one to four thousand. Tosa and Iyo in the meanwhile, assured of victory over Awa are building a navy to protect thier island domain.

War is declared on the 1st of febuary and on the second Yukihito recieves news that Iyo has supported their ally. This opportunity is used to increase the tax burden on the peasants.

Victory is quickly obtained through force of numbers and some of the mercenaries are dismissed with a fair share of booty. Sadly the leaders of Tosa evade capture. If they have any honour they will slit their bellies in shame.

The inlaws have outstayd their welcome... they are beginning to treat this as their own home.

At first Yukihito is inclined to take the domain of Musashi's (three province state to the east, sorry forgot to include it on the map) guarantee of Awa's independance as an insult, however the silver tongued emissary (shamefully liking having his head attached to his body) manages to explain that this is more of a warning to other states that Musashi and Awa are of like mind.

Indeed when Yukihito and Sadataki (leader of the Musashi clan) meet they get on very well, and are very similar. Perhaps Sadataki is marginaly more competant, and has a slightly more bitter dislike of merchants though. A marriage alliance is quickly arranged between the two clans.

Around this time a man named Jozheng Song appears at court from mainland china. Yukihito is slow to trust him due to the fact he arrived on a merchant ship. However he quickly proves to be an excelent drillmaster for the army of Awa.

Twelve months after his marraige to the Settsu girl, a child is born! Thats three months he wasted...

Tosa falls in September - most of the heirachy have done the honourable thing, but a few need some help... and on the last day of december Iyo follow. Both promptly accept the overlordship of the Awa clan, Shikoku is unified!

Feedback on game-play and AAR layout is appreciated. Like I said this is the first time I've played WWM, so any tips are appreciated.

Nice wars. I have WWM and was thinking of playing as one of the shogunates, but never got around to it. Plus, all of those flags look alike! Anyway, good luck! :)

Yes the similarity of the flags is irritating, but the number is soon reduced.

I was rather hoping that Joseon/Korea would start expanding to the islands to provide something of a challenge, but so far it has just been Japanese minors blobbing.

1401 - Beyond Shikoku

As he sits evaluating his domain, Yukihito realises that it is no better off than before... just a little bigger. Expanding the military is difficult when finances are tight, especially when all the surplus goes into diplomatic ceremony and gifts of novelty sushi (the Awa clan has a very imaginative chef). Something must be done; fortunately Yukihito is still seething over the insult from So, and sees this as an opportunity to kill two... well more than two but never mind.

It quickly becomes apparent that the people of Nagasaki also have a dislike of So... or perhaps they simply wish the company of merchants and seek to bring more into their domain (Yukihito has to clench his muscles to stop himself shuddering at the thought).

Preparations are quickly made and the first thousand men dispatched to So... by the time the next thousand arrive, the battle is almost over, but they ensure victory. Yukihito himself receives a nasty wound from an arrow early in the battle, but continues anyway; he would not dishonour himself by failing to take part in the fight.

The siege of the city is surprisingly short lived, and the So possessions are quickly annexed to the Awa domain. Yukihito celebrates by violently expelling a number of merchants from the island. Sadly they are replaced, but at least this time they are from the Awa clan.

Other clans take a surprisingly dim view of these actions, despite his undoubtedly just cause. It is clearly jealousy that the Awa should now posses such an important trading station; Nagasaki are particularly vocal in condemning the events.

The ruler of Echizen however finds the whole thing rather amusing and offers an alliance to the Awa. This seems to be an advantageous arrangement, and so is accepted with the customary ceremony. A few lesser clans offer alliances, however Yukihito feels insulted by these and the equally customary ceremony of separations takes place...

Around this time Yukihito discovers his ally, Sadatake of the Musashi is at war with the Kii and another clan who... (his face looks even more expressionless than usual as he tries to think who they are). upon inspection it becomes clear that the entire Kii army is currently besieging their neighbours...

Thus war is declared, their land ravaged and strongholds besieged. It is discovered that the Awa now have enough able bodied men to recruit more into the army. Yukihito is surprised to find money in his treasury before remembering his acquisition of the former So lands... he promptly asks for a basic, uncomplicated statement of the Awa finances... and finds it to his liking.

The Kii have finally managed to take control of their neighbours, and our allies Echizen have marched south to attack them...

and unsuspectingly flee home to find the Awa armies waiting. Yukihito, feeling in a good mood decides to spare the men of Kii if they swear fealty to him... which they promptly do. however the city people need some further persuasion.

First they simply beg the Awa to leave... however Yukihito's counter offer is flung over their walls attached to the emissaries head. The Kii leader is a peaceful (weak in Yukihito's word) man and decides to bow before the Awa.

He then turns his attention to dealing with Kii's enemies as their new protector. However he finds that he has a conflict of interest... the first is his good friend Sadatake (supposedly on who's behalf he went to war in the first place), and the second is the Mutsu clan in the north whom Yukihito himself has close ties with as his mother came from that clan... indeed Mutsu Momozono has willed that Yukihito should inherit after his death

The following year is peaceful, a small revolt breaks out amongst the merchants, but is put down quickly. Echizen requests marriage ties later in the year, and the Awa elders agree that this is a good idea.

Eight months later, Sadatake finally gets around to invading Kii, however the rebuilt armies of Kii (with subsidies from Yukihito of corse) manage to defeat him. A few months after that Echizen make a sneak attack on Mikawa. After a bit of debate Yukihito decides to support them.

However Yukihito failed to notice that Nagasaki had intervened on Mikawa's behalf... until they landed men in Awa's trade outpost and reports came in that the Nagasaki fleet was headed for Awa's 1 galley and 2 transports. After stowing the Awa ships safely in Port Nagasaki sends their fleet north where Echizen engages them... we loose track of both fleets however.

Then "devastating" news arrives from the north: Yukihito's uncle, Momozono has died and he is now recognised as head of the Mutso clan.

Our ships, again out of port, are surprised by the remainder of Mikawa's fleet, but no major damage is done and they are shortly incorporated into the Echizen domain.

We manage to land troops in Nagasaki and relieve our own fort, however the Nagasaki fleet makes a suden reapearance... naturaly we loose, but miraculously the two cogs escape back to port unscathed. Yukihito looks forward to another vassal in Nagasaki

Yukihito is then incredibly surprised when Nagasaki troops appear off the coast of Shikoku... he manages to dispatch the first lot with vengeance, but still recovering from that fight another contingent lands under the fairly gifted Kunimichi. It appears that Nagasaki have annexed Ryukyu... Damn

Yukihito now controls Nagasaki itself, but with the enemy fleet controlling the sea and the Awa army separated he decides he is unable to get any further in the war and so settles for the maximum he can.

The young Kosho listens to stories of the Awa battles with glee and redoubles his diligence at weapons training. Yukihito is proud to find that his child has inherited his hatred of merchants, regularly beating the merchants children bloody, reminding Yukihito of his youth... however unlike Yukihito, Kosho doesn't bother to find some excuse before the beating which causes a few problems which need to be smoothed over with gifts of sushi...

The Awa clan in general agree that more ships are needed and Yukihito ensures that their building is overseen by warriors, not merchants.

I'll follow this one - I started a Japanese unification game when I tried WWM and found it interesting, but sadly my slow computer couldn't really handle the mod... So I'll have to see how it goes here :)

@ JDMS - Indeed I need to get by BB down though before I do anything else, as I hinted Kosho (the heir) has an abysmal diplomacy rating :(

@ Malurous - Yes I have noticed it running slower since WWM, but it isn't unplayable, and the additions make up for it. I have been exploring the .txt files for the modifiers and getting to grips with how they work and their benefits/detriments, it deffinately adds something to the game. Hopefully I can explore them in my next update, although I'll have to find an excuse... I doubt Yukihito would be at all interested :p

Notice: After taking a look at the wider world I noticed large parts of it had no culture... this was due to an edit in the culture file to add dynasties... it is now fixed, but the save is slightly different - Japan itself is largely the same however so it should continue as normal. So for those of you eagle eyed enough to spot discrepancies that is the cause :)

Should have an update in a few hours.

Also what do you guys think of the style? more text? more/less selective pictures?

Shocking form from Yukihito.

I am enjoying the bits of humour mixed with the warfare. The style of your AAR is very good. I'll follow with interest.

1406 - of Claims and Koreans

The in-laws kindly return the invitation to visit, and it quickly becomes apparent that Kosho would be a far more suitable ruler for them than their current heir who is a distant cousin... so distant he was brought up on a farm. Further, Settsu controls both a wealthy centre of trade AND the Imperial capital (and thus the Emperor). Thus the Awa must take control... whilst the in-laws are distracted by the latest batch of novelty sushi (bordering on the pornographic, but nothing so explicit as to make the stone faces crack), Awa forces slip across the border from Kii.

The Settsu army wishing to get their hands on the Awa sushi chef cross the channel immediately, but their capital has already fallen. They quickly give in to Awa's demands and let Yoshihito take command. The local merchants invest in life insurance.

Yukihito has to bring his new domain closer to the Awa, and so gifts of sushi are widely distributed to the leading nobility, whilst he attempts to persuade and threaten Settsu's enemies that the new regime is not to be messed with.

Feeling they are being taxed too much the creative middle class demand more freedoms. Yukihito feels his fingers flex over his sword, but amongst the leaders of the discontents is the sushi chef who feels he has been over worked lately. Faced with the loss of such a creative genius Yukihito is forced to concede some freedoms.

The Izumo clan has recently expanded, and despite rumours that Arisugawa Meisho spends time with merchants and regularly takes their advice, Yukihito feels an alliance would be beneficial...

The request is accepted and their allies Inaba offer us an alliance too. It is decided that to have the three clans supporting each other would provide an excellent support structure against the expansionist Koreans...

...Who have taken Japanese land. However they are having rebel problems in Taiwan. Hopefully that should keep them distracted for a while. Overtures are made to the Manchus, but they do not appreciate the sushi.

Whilst at the Inaba court, one Kiso Misuno comes to the attention of Yukihito. He shares Yukihito's dislike of merchants, and has spent much of his life perfecting the art of swindling them. It quickly becomes apparent that he could do a great deal for the Awa economy.

He makes a general assessment of the economy:

Spreading rumours of rice crop failures and suspension to fleet expansion he manages to get excellent deals. On top of this he increases the value of the coinage whilst convincing everyone the newly minted coins are in fact worth much more than it should be (liberal application of sake is one of his favoured methods)

Yukihito decides to take more power into the hands of his central administration. A minor official feels slighted and commits suicide which temporarily destabilises the situation.

Inaba decide they want to pick a fight... unfortunately we feel unable to join them (Harima has supplied some excelent "performing artists" to the Awa court and officials really would be lost if borders were closed between the two nations)

Instead we finance a hermit of strong faith to go convert Daemado to our faith. However being a hermit he isn't very accessible to the common man, so it might take a while.

Inaba win their war and expand their holdings... we reaffirm our alliance with them with gifts of sushi.

1412 - Emperor & Shogun

In a particularly grand ceremony the Emperor declares Takeda Yukihito Shogun of Japan...

It comes to the attention of the Awa court that Musashi are at war with several smaller states. The decision is made to ally with them and use that as an excuse to join in. However Musashi is too quick and grabs the lions share. Yukihito, worried that his reputation is becoming to peaceful, frets about where he can war next...

An option soon presents itself... As the Shogun of Japan it is his responsibility to defend against *cough* over-powerful warlords. He promptly declares war on Musashi. To make matters easier they seem to have disbanded their army. Perhaps they didnt want to appear over-powerfull...

After a year of removing stubborn pockets of resistance the Awa control the entirety of Musashi lands. Yukihito notes they have named a province after his clan, and is duly honoured, they shall be left some land in the peace deal...

... Their home province. Eight for the price of two; Yukihito is suitably satisfied that his reputation is maintained.

The aditional provinces add a significant amount to the Awa military, however full exploitation of their economy is not possible at the current time for fear of forcing them to rebellion.

Kii fail to realise the wonders of being directly ruled by Yukihito and their leads elect to lead a shorter life instead...

We notice that Hyuga has a new ruler from a new dynasty... the er... Emperor... does not feel that is acceptable, and so demands that the Takeda be named heirs.

This is sadly rejected so a military operation is planned... however we wait to see Nagasaki removed first (scum).

Kosho finally comes of age... we even sent him to live with the hermit on Daemado in hope that would temper him a little. On reflection perhaps that is the reason for the low conversion rate. At least his little brother, Ogi, is showing signs of inteligence, even at 4.

War is declared. Inaba support the pretenders in Hyuga, but we leave them for our vassals to deal with.

A decisive battle is quickly won by Yukihito, his strategy of enveloping the enemy using cavalry proving decisive...

We note that the Koreans have a few problems... perhaps something to take advantage of?

Our vassals are plodding through Inaba... Yukihito marches to speed up the process of er... integration.

We take the peasants out of the sodden rice fields and put them in a mine. People believe there must be a backlog of souls awaiting reincarnation as life expectancy drops.

The Hygan pretender is executed, and Inaba subjugated. Sushi is quickly dispatched.

Rebels celebrate the news of Awa victories by dancing through the streets of central Japanese towns.

Bungo made a slight miscalculation and ended up as part of the Awa possessions. Lucky us.

Of late Yukihito has taken to bouts of heavy drinking. In his hungover state he cares even less about the general maintenance of his domain than before, and more freedoms are grabbed; Naturally the economy benefits from this small break from incompetent hands.

Storm clouds are gathering on the mainland, but the Awa stand unchallenged in Japan.

I really like the humor you sprinkle in your updates, like the Yukihito drinking theory and the whole hermit business  Keep it up!

Seems that your enemy number one at this point is Infamy - the only thing that slows you down on the islands.

1420ish - Sake and erm... what was the question?

Over the next eight yeas or so Yukihito continues in his sake fuled haze letting events roll by... we hear the absolutely devastating news that Korea has collapsed...

... That an underachieving Tanuki would be better suited to running an empire than the new Chinese Emperor

Um... what? I didn't arrange that... seriously... ooo she's pretty, never mind... come here my dear...

Around this time Yukihito's second son, known as Ogi, is found to be infatuated with his concubine... which, whilst improper, is not uncommon. However Yukihito discovers that she is the daughter of a merchant. Ogi is quickly packed off to spend some time with the hermit.

Rumours start to spread that the Chinese Emperor is in fact a Tanuki... rebellions arise, with Jin, Lulong, Zhao and Kwangtong declaring their independence.

(The Japanese map makers desperately try to dumb down the map to disguise the fact it was taken by a satellite in outer-reality)

Yukihito finds a drinking buddy...

Ya don't say?

Yukihito manages to stay sober for this one, and spends several days of enjoyment punishing these reprobates.

The "hands off" approach to government appears to bear fruit...

And has led to a central administration that is capable of running it without interference from the Shogun:

The Mongols realise they sent their daughter to the wrong place and demand her back... naturally this only makes Yukihito even less willing to part with his most recent bride (he likes the idea he's not supposed to have her)

Sadly the excitement proves too much and he passes away in the most enjoyable way. Kosho rises to the headship of the Awa clan and Shogun of Japan. The other demenses are incorporated into Awa proper.

Kosho is renowned for his tactic known in educated circles as "killing the bastards". The army is quickly expanded to make use of this most excellent situation.

The Awa finances have improved no end, sake be praised...

No doubt Ogi will be doing many of his brothers duties looking after the domain whilst Kosho runs around the country killing things. Due to the fact that Kosho spends his time like that... he has very little time to spend with his wife and therefore has no son. Ogi is tempted to do this duty for his brother too, but in the end elects to ensure the comfort of the recently widowed Mongol princess...
