Traffic AI has been a disaster since release and is still unimproved. In this picture all the traffic on the highway is insisting on being in the left lane. If the cars would use more than one lane there would be plenty of capacity but instead it creates multiple traffic jams. This traffic does not have anywhere to turn in multiple miles. Much of this traffic is in fact heading out of my city but some of it actually needs to make a right turn in a few miles yet it still all demands to be in the left lane. Without the merge lane on the left all that traffic comes in from the right and the jam is much worse. Despawning trucks in left lane make it look better than it is.
