I wonder why when I for example play the Iroquois I can't build ships in the provinces that should have shipyards since there are no shipyards. Is there anyone that knows how that works?
And I do have high enough tec. level to build ships...

thanks for any reply...

AFAIK you need a certain "whiteman-value" to be able to build ship. You get whiteman when you're in contact with european settlers...

It also restricts cavalry, since (historically) horses did not exist in the Americas until re-introduced by the Spanish (although there is archaeological evidence of them thousands of years before, they had died out). The values that allow construction of cavalry and ships, if I recall, are the same.

It also acts as one amongst several multipliers that are giving you those ridiculously high tech costs. ;)

While I doubt you'll be running into this problem as the Iroquois, when it comes time to build actual shipyards, you will need 1000 ducats, level 11 naval tech and they can only be built in a coastal province which you own and control which has a base tax value of 6 or higher.

Shipyards greatly increase the amount of ships you can build in a province which has one and also adds 1 colonist annualy to your tally.

There may be other effects, but those are the ones I'm aware of anyway.

No, not naval tech 31. Naval tech 11 for shipyards. (I routinely build them as France around 1510, so I should know....)

Also, as he implied, shipyards only give you a colonist bonus and vastly increase shipbuilding capacity. Any port province with a population of 1000 or more can build ships (unless you're subject to whiteman penalty), though usually only 1-3 at a time. (There's some sort of formula based on the province's tax value; it seems to be roughly 1/4th of base tax or so, but I could be wrong. The highest I've seen without a shipyard is 5 at a time in Anglia.)

Try Sjælland (capital of denmark) after the sound due. 6 ships without shipyard.
I should also think some of the Chinese or Japanese provinces have quite high build capacities.

1,000,000,000,000 minus 1 billion = 0
1 billion divided by 1 million = 1 million
1 trillion divided by 1 billion = 1 million
If you disagree, then you are most likely an american.
OT: this is why anyone with a proper knowledge of math doesn't use the words 'billion' or 'trillion' unless their meaning is clear from the context (and probably not even then). Use SI prefixes (Mega-, Giga-, Tera-, etc.) or exponential notation (10^6 or 1E+6, etc.) instead.

On-topic, I believe the formula for shipbuilding capacity is:
Ship Build: (net tax 1 does get to build 1 so either fractions are rounded up or there is just a minimum capacity of 1)
0.1x net tax value
2x in core province
10x with shipyard

These were found in an old patch so they may have changed. Note they are based on net tax rather than base tax.
