Shipyards provide two key advantages. One the first built gives you an extra colonist per year. Secondly they increase the build capacity.

Therefore they are vital if you have (or intend to have) a colonial empire. Also if your empire is spread about and ships are necessary for transport then they are a big help.

In relation to the size of your empire? The extra build capacity is more important if you have few ports so is relatively of more value when smaller. The extra colonist is always valuable whatever your size. I hope that answers your questions.

Of equal importance maybe is the added value to your navy support limit(from every shipyard a +10 iirc)

Yeah. Generally any serious maritime and/or colonial power should have one.

If you are wealthy or quite spread out in your maritime possessions, you may want more than one; for example one in each major area (as a near-historical England for example, you may want to have one in Britain, one in North America, one in the Mediterranean - perhaps Gibraltar or Malta, one in India, one in the South Atlantic somewhere - perhaps St. Helena - and one in the West Indies).

You can only have shipyard in homeprovs (same contintent or land connection to capital) iirc, base tax value must be 6 or greater in the province too.
