In a real time game it is very odd that there isn't an option for a fleet to head to the nearest port when they reach 50% attrittion.

The number of ships I have lost in a busy war to me forgetting to check them every 2 minutes is greater than ships lost due to enemy action.

Please include an option (a check box in the unit window or something to retire at 50%).

Actually, what would be cool is changing the colour of the text in the army roster for any troops or ships with less than, say, 50% strength.

Above 50% = white
50-30% = orange
below 30% = red

Or something similar anyway...

I like Azugal's idea.

Or it shouldn't be too hard to script a pop up, along the lines of "Ships in your fleet are below 30% strength, would you like to return them to the nearest port? Yes or No."

Or they could implement the new patrol feature from In Nomine, from what I gather you can use this to have ships go out to blockade, return to port to repair, and then back again.

Are you suggesting when any ship is below X% or when the average of all the ships in a fleet is below X%? The former would be a royal pain because you'd get it after almost every single naval battle, I could see where the latter might be useful (you might lose a couple ships while sailing back to port, but at least it wouldn't be the entire fleet).

No, it wasn't. The only thing equivalent to it are the complex naval missions from the HoI series.

What about a home port feature? that they could report back too..
But then again, without all the management what is there to do? I find that I lose most of my fleet when I set the speed to superfast while waiting on an army battle, and when the battle is done, (speed slowed down), I find the Navy in shambles....

I can see issues with auto management. Like if you're sending your fleet halfway around the world. And they get 3/4 of the way there, and decide to run back home because they drop below 50%. I guess it would have to be programmed carefully to take a variety of situations into account.

I guess that's what I like the idea of just a visual warning. I don't think the game should be idiot proof, we should be allowed to accidentally destroy our fleets through our own incompetence. I just think that some kind of visual warning, like coloured text in the army roster, might be nice.
