Ship turrets are not individual-minded?

After much examination of most battles, i have noticed that the point defense turrets arent really there to protect your fleet from missiles and fighter. What it really seem to do is that the turret is only focused for the specific ship it is engaging.

So if a ship A is engaging ship B, but a missile is fired by C to A, ship A will not defend itself. Instead, it will shoot down any missiles or fighters from ship B.

However theoretically this isn't always the case. If ship A has multiple point defense turrets, it will either commit all turrets to shoot down incoming missile or use one for the other. But i believe that the multiple turrets will, most of the time, concentrate on single target (mainly the ones approaching them). But even then, point defenses do seem to let some missiles slip even if it can be seen approaching in broad daylight.
I do agree that missiles slipping in is there by design and point defense wont make your fleet untouchable, but the rate at which it is firing/defending is so bad, no matter how many point defense you put on a single ship. If what ive seen so far is accurate and im not over-thinking this, it would be better to have point defense turrets with individuality if its not much trouble or a CPU muncher.

So basically it's best if every ship has its own dedicated PD? That goes a long way of explaining the complaints of PD boats not protecting fleets effectively.

I know that dice could also be used in these battles and perhaps thats the reason why some point defenses dont work as they are supposed to. If all defenses worked as they should then it would be overpowered and missiles would be obsolete. So i wasnt sure if i should make this thread at first. But i have begun to notice defenses not shooting down the most obvious missile more often. And then when i saw my cruiser (has 4 point defense) not firing a single shot at an incoming missile, thats when i decided that something could definitely be wrong.

Personally, I think that we don't should have any kind of turret in the ships of this game -- the great majority of the sci-fi TV shows and movies, the turrets of the warships are usually little and barely visible (and that if or when they're visible!).
