I do really love the way this game is going to be.
But there is one point that kind of "annoys" me like hell and breaks the immersion completely for me.

And thats the animation when a ship is destroyed.

in the Videos (only watched till 14 now, but i don t think it changed in the later ones) when a ship is destroyed in combat it gets "dark", slows down a lot and goes "down". Kind of like its "sinking".
I don t know why its been implemented this way but in my eyes it looks just so "wrong"...

Would be much better when the ship just "loses control" and drifts in the way in flew before (with the same speed) while exploding.
But this "sinking" isn t the way it should be displayed i think =o

How do you guys think about this ?

They said its to get the wreck out of the way from obscuring non-dead ships. I'm fine with that part. That said, I'd like it more if moving ships don't suddenly lose all their momentum and become static, but rather hurl forward while exploding and sinking.

I sure as hell don't want valuable debris flying away into space at however many million miles an hour. Physics can take a back-seat.

Doesn't bother me that much, but I take the OP's point.

They could just go with a flare and subside as the reactor goes, I guess. Breaking in half would be worse than "sinking".

its fine if they "go down" to be not in the way and make a clear what is alive and what isn t anymore, but i don t know =/ agree with you that the main thing about this is them losing theyr momentum. its a absolutely understandable solution to let them explode after a sec to let them disappear. But i don t think it would make it more difficult to differ the fleet fom destroyed ships when they just drift of for a sec before exploading instead of stopping and go down.

I would prefer it to have more of a Michael Bay effect. Have it snap in half and cascade the place with a glorious, fiery explosion.
kind of like this gif

standard thing for this would also be 2-3 little explosions on the hull und one big to take the ship out

agree completely there.
The breaking would look cool it it happens from time to time but it would take more work than it is worth in the end i think. Also the ships shouldn t be that long in space after dieing. If at all, then its only something for the flag-ship i think.

Nothing should be treated that way, even crappy movies. Not even the talentless monster that makes them.

I much prefer the quiet dignity of the current ship-death. Gets them out of the way, and a clear signal that they're destroyed.

I don't think it's that big of a problem however, it would be cool if when a ship was destroyed near a planet/star/black hole it then started to crash into that object.

Explodey should be in line with the ship's size, too.

Lot's of small flashes as the cruisers start to decimate the destroyers... a medium flash as a cruiser goes up... then BOOM!!!

My god... the Stella Maxiumus! We're done for now...

Smaller ships could probably just explode right on the spot the moment they're destroyed. Bigger ones could tumble for a few seconds, wracked by explosions, before going up in a gigantic flash as the reactor breaches.

It's not sinking, the sub light engines went off and the ship couldn't resist anymore to the system's gravity. Therfore it was pulled in direction of the heaviest object (probably the star) and gave you the illusion of sinking. Explanation working great for me :p

You know that a space ship doesn't stop flying or is even getting slower if you stop the engine? :p In fact, it can't stop or slow down without engine!

Real physics are simply unpractical for such a game, though, so it's fine for me if they "sink".

If maybe you watched the battle between the Blorg fleet and the fallen empire, you could see some of the blorg ships exploding in half in 2 pieces.

I would prefer more "breaking apart" style animations for ship death if they have time to improve it after release.

You know that a space ship doesn't stop flying or is even getting slower if you stop the engine? :p In fact, it can't stop or slow down without engine!

Real physics are simply unpractical for such a game, though, so it's fine for me if they "sink".
Didn't say that it should stop, I said it was attracted in direction to the nearest star. Like the international space station iss which has to continually make little corrections in order to keep in orbit and not sinking towards planet surface
