I colonized a planet and put the shelter on a tile with 2 food, but all it produces is energy. I thought the ship shelter also produces whatever food is on the tile — is this no longer true in 1.5? will it produce the food when i upgrade to Planetary Administration? (1.5 is the first version i played, but all the information about this i found online seems older.)

All buildings, including capital buildings, will produce the resource on the tile if those resources are of the same type the building itself produces.

Pre-1.5, capital buildings produced food (and minerals), while now they produce energy and unity. So you want to put them on energy tiles, not food or mineral tiles.

So where does the food come from to sustain the first growing pop?
Food is shipped in from other worlds.

Ah, that's the reason, thanks!

Did I just ignore it or does placing the initial structure not prompt you about suppressing the resource?

No warning message, i only found out when it built the shelter and suppressed the richest food tile on the planet ☹

The lack of warning is probably an oversight. Hopefully it will be fixed at some point.

If you feel like fixing this, it is possible to demolish the shelter and rebuilt it somewhere else on the planet.

Though probably, rather than rebuilding the shelter itself, it will be better to wait until you have five pops. Then, instead of upgrading the shelter to a planetary capital you can demolish it and build a planetary capital somewhere else.
