I was war with a neighboring A.I empire, when about half way through the war I sent my fleet of 4.5k to fight the A.I's fleet of 1.5k. However when the arrived my fleet just flew up to the enemy fleet without actually engaging them, all the while being shot at by the enemy fleet.

I was unable to order my fleet to retreat, and when I tried to move them out of system they wouldn't make the jump.

I was able to move about the system as thought they were not in combat, but the enemy fleet still followed my fleet around all the while killing my fleet.

Although some of my ship would still do the combat disengage, so ended up with a remaining fleet of 2 cruiser 's and 1 corvette, so yay I guess.

Also lost my space amoeba, r.i.p Nova </3

It's a bug that crops up on occasion. Kind of annoying when you're playing Ironman since it can quite literally kill your entire fleet if you're not paying attention. And on Ironman you can't go back.

As to it not being reproducible when I exit out of the game, once I notice my ships aren't damaging others, and reload everything is working fine again. I've never had it crop up again on a reload.

Its a bug that's been int he game for a while now. I notice it happens more often in the late game with large fleets or if the game is starting to lag.

IF you reload, your fleet will start firing again. No easy fix, I'm afraid beyond looking at your fleet at the beginning of every battle and not looking away until you see it fire. If it doesn't go back to the nearest autosave.

I once lost 250k fleet strength to this bug because a 50k AE fleet remnant attacked my 1000k strong fleetstack which was waiting for my collosus ... I did not look at first because I had crushed the AEs fleet twice already and assumed my ships would just delete any remnant fleets.

I think this happens sometimes if you defeat a fleet, but some enemy ships manage to survive with emergency ftl. When engaging the same fleet later, your ships don't attack for some reason. But yeah saving and reloading can fix this, if you notice it fast enough

Yep, common-ish issue.
The last time I encountered it, I videoed it; though not bothered to do anything with said video.

Definitely seems related in some way to remnants of defeated fleets.

Good to hear it doesn't persist through save/load..... though I imagine that means it gets pushed down the priority list for being fixed..... which is bad.

You know, that may be it. I'd definitely engaged several FE fleets and seen some of them retreat with heavy losses prior to discovering the unengageable fleet, and the unengageable fleet was quite small compared to their initial fleet sizes.

I had the same bug not so long ago. I had indeed almost destroyed a fleet, and they fled to the system next to my fleet. I went to attack them, but somehow I couldn't. I retreated my navy, and several times I tried re-engaging, but I still couldn't attack. The small fleet the enemy had continued attacking all the stations I had conquered (and none of them shot back). I decided to save and reload, which fixed the issue. This still costed me quite a lot of momentum and alloys.

Thanks for the replies people, very helpful information.

So what I can gather is that the bug seems to occasionally happen when engaging a previously defeated fleet and re-loading solves the issue?

That information will help me salvage my current ironman game, so thanks again.

I had a similar problem, I reported it in a bug thread. Go ahead and share your experiences. The developers are complaining that if you reload your game, it's not reproducible.

I'll head over to your thread and throw in whatever info I can, hopefully the dev's can re-create and fix the bug with this information.
