I don't see the problem here. Disable your target's defenses, weapons, engine and ideally escape pods (so that the remaining crew has a vested interest in keeping the ship in one piece) and send over boarding shuttles / transport marines / deploy flying boarding space monkeys / fungal boarding spores.

Ship capture allows you to reverse engineer enemy tech or just press ships into service on a front where everything that flies is welcome.

Mechanic worked fine and was fun in MOO2. As mentioned before in thread, could also be even more interesting when pirates start hijacking your research vessel and you have to recover it before your enemy does.....

The biggest problem with capturing ships is, that you either have to make it random or very difficult or the players will just start to exploit it. Someone posted a picture of Homeworld in this thread and in this game, capturing enemy ships was an easy exploited mechanic to break the single player.
I suggest that you check out the Space Empires series, specifically SEIV & SEV. They both have a very nice, and easy to use method for ship capture that worked wonderfully in game. You had a specific "Boarding Party" component that you could install like any other component, and it was a tech that had to be developed. So, not everyone got it, and it didn't always work. But, when it did, it was pretty cool.

An additional benefit was that it was all kinds of stupid fun running around with a fleet of mixed ships from different races if you didn't tear them apart for the tech.

especially pirates and everything.....pirates need to board ships....I think that is one of the main purposes of being a pirate.....ships and booty

What stops your enemy from teleporting you right back into space? Or even better, into their own engine's exhaust trail? Crisp space marine coming right up.
First method I dont think you need the return trip (its boarding afterall), so the technology works by having a dedicated machine (imagine one way portal) and you have to stand in them to teleport.

Another method is that the teleporter need to charge up and generate obvious force fields while doing so. So once you see them you run, so it wont work unless you are pinned down or cooperating.

I feel it is much more plausible then surviving short range gunfire, blasting a hole then entering ship like earth pirates. The two mechanisms can coexist, of course. I also like homeworld style "parasite" hijack.

(Again highly recommned FTL the game, boarding trult gave ground combat a purpose)

The biggest mechanics problem I see is how would this work for ships with different FTL type?

Fleets can only have ships of one type, so you wouldn't be able to add the captured ship to your fleet (like in EU). I guess you could make a new fleet of captured ships. But what if they are wormhole ships, and you're a warp empire? You'd have no way to take them home.

Given that, I think the current system (leaving debris that you can study) makes more sense.

It can be made a viable combat option as a new type of weapon system, rather than just for potential benefits after the combat.

Its also easy to imagine smaller vessels being able to be sent back as cargo.

The bottom line is, boarding sounds FUN, i personally want it. As I mentioned there are ways to make it plausible.

Master of Orion 2 had an excellent and refined Capturing System.

Assault Shuttles
against any Ship

Transporters:
The Shields must be down on one side.

Immobile enemy ships:
There are more ways to immobilize your Enemys. (Tractor Beam, special missilies...)

Capturing and retro engineering the Ships of the antaran was one of the most thrilling gamig experiences I ever made.

If Stellaris one day could become so good it would be a big pleasure to me.

ps:
It also was a pleasure to read the strange posts about the impossibility to capture enemy Vehicles in war. Its so false, that I dont find it useless to mention the numberless occurrences in History. Just wondering :-O.

One theoretical point against boarding is that the species in the game can be very different, so even if you have borded an alien ship, you might not be able to use it as it is build for a species with a very different physical appearance and the alien ship's life support system is not sufficient for your species needs.
But it could still make sense just to study their tech

While I am all over the idea of physical types and varying sizes for the different races, that unfortunately really hasn't been taken into account in the game, so it's not a factor at this time.

Now, hypothetically speaking, if it were included, along with ship capture and unknown alien tech type, those could be fun things to contend with. Great! You've captured an alien vessel; they're twice your size, have more appendages than you, and their technology looks like your cat coughed a hairball inside of your dog - what do you do now? Fun times. :)

Could your species even operate a ship designed for aliens, though?
Maybe you could use your science vessel to research them? To learn some tech from the other race and to operate them with lesser proficiency, because they are not made by/for your race.
