There doesn't seem to be any boarding action going on. It wouldn't really be "realistic" in my opinion, though.

It is put in quotation marks for a reason there...

I think of a lot of possible additions to the game, I would put stuff like boarding pretty low on the priority list. It just isn't really a thing in naval warfare for some time now.

Any kind of modern weapons makes mid battle boarding action obsolete. Point defence, auto guns, traps and self-destruct all make boarding close to impossible and very costly for the attacker, with minimal pay-off.

When done right it will be a useful buff for "army" part of our military. Right now I plan to ignore ground combat in favor of navy like I always do for space games. (Funny how it is complete opposite for earth games like EU4)

As for mechanism:
FTL the indie game taught me beaming boarding parties to the other ship is not only balanced, but fun :)

Capturing an enemy ship would be kind of cool. But I would expect the rational would follow along the lines of surrender rather than boarding. Then the ship could be studied and possibly allow a science type discover/reverse engineering bonus over what can be done by studying wreckage.

Boarding parties may not exactly be the most realistic thing ever--

However, one could instead implement the mechanic of ship-thieving Homeworld-style with capture corvettes or drones to latch to an enemy vessel, hack into it, and use said vessels own drives and systems to impulse its way back to either a friendly station or specalized capital vessel.

The hacking bit is a little far fetched when dealing with innumerable alien species possibilities with countless possible methodologies to technology - but - static binary is indeed static binary so... eh?

Dano. Would be cool to see as a mechanic. Maybe just allow it for systems with one of your own starbases in them to discourage enemies from sending small harassment raiding parties. And while immediately turning around and making a ship fire on it's former allies 12 seconds after it's been latched onto isn't exactly realistic, interning said vessel into lockdown and using it for research as a special project or even just as a diplomatic asset would be cool.

My thoughts are kind of along with the Expanse series, where the Martian battleship looses either the CIC or Engineering and self-destructs. Why wouldn't you have AI that auto rigs the ship to explode when it is lost to a strike team? I guess smaller ships could be captured but what would be the real point of that? Also PDC would rip boarding parties to shreds.
