I really like the weapons part of the ships, it really reflects the armament of Star Trek universe ships. Then there's the engineering, warp drive , sensors on the right of the design screen.

The part that I struggle with is the secondary hull; lots of options, relatively few slots, and some of the options, like crew bunks and inertial dampers surely come as standard. Aren't inertial dampers primarily there to protect the crew from the acceleration and deceleration of moving between warp and impulse, between FTL and much slower than FTL.

Inertial Dampers in Star Trek indeed are there to protect the crew mostly from the effects of warp travel an acceleration, which would otherwise be quite nasty. In addition they protect the crew from collision- / impact effects, like weapon hits, etc. They are indeed a most basic and mandatory part of any Starfleet vessel.

As for the mod, I could see them as some basic equipment that can be put onto ship during the early ages when you begin playing. It is something that fits into Star Trek and even gives you some small bonuses. Once you get other parts, you won't use them anyway.

Yet you made a good point: There are indeed a lot of cool things you can add to the ship but spaces / slots to do so are quite limited. Also there are some other things, that I see similar. For example the addition of a Tactical, Science and Engineering Station. Every ship has such a station and bonuses and advantages they give not that significant. From what I can see, there is no real need to use those stations. But there are a lot of cool things you do want to add but have no space to do so. Yet I don't know how it will turn out with the newer bigger ships. I have just gone into developing a cruiser and in my current UFP game I am just close to hit 2300. In my Romulan game I am even earlier.

It may be better to have them as necessary prerequisites for further technologies without actually having them as options that take up valuable slots.
