Does anyone have any idea of how to form Japan as Shimazu? They have some of the best ideas for military, I guess earning them the nickname 'the Prussia of Japan'. But I've failed like 5 times now. Any tips or tricks?

In short: Boats.

Delete every boat that isnt a galley and build galleys to force limit. Now you can control who gets acces to the little starting island. Which means you can delare war on anyone who shares your starting island even if they got troublesome allies in the rest of Japan. One on one you will smash anyone who starts next to you. After you unify your starting island, take the small one next to you. That should give you enough land to snowball from there.

As mentioned, build galleys to your forcelimit to isolate Kyushu from the rest of Japan, build an infantry unit, and blitz Ito in Hyuga for your core. Take exploration as your first idea so you can begin colonizing the Philippines and later the Americas, Taiwan and Australia: obviously go for Manila first, and try to get the age ability that gives you a dev boost in your colonies. Move slowly across Kyushu and take advantage of any wars another clan might be in: nab Shikoku if you can as well. After that, you should be set to unify Japan on your own terms.

But... but... the Shimazu will rise again...

Do not delete your boats. You can get gold for selling them to korea and ming, both of whom will happily pay you for them.

Beyond that, id recruit a mercenary cavalry unit from day one, and declare a reconquest war on the OPM having your core right at the start of the game. The AI usually takes a little while before it starts acquiring alliances, which gives you a window to just smash them fast if you're quick on getting another unit.

Ally Uesugi just to keep other AI nations from attacking you, and break when suitable. They're far away, and your most immediate targets wont be on that side of the Island.

Here's another tip. If you have your fleet already in a blockading position right when you delcare war against really small Daimyos you can get 25% just from blockades. This 25% warscore will prevent them from calling in allies.

Yes that is a neat trick to attack minor with huge alliance networks. Just want to add that you'll have to be careful that they don't have any boats in the sea zone when your declare, as when a naval battle starts it won't count as blockading.

You don't need to boat, just loans out the ass and willingness to dow like a madman. If you aren't in control of 1/3 of Japan by 1454 you are going extremely slow. With starts like this the faster you declare the easier it is.

Basically ally people in central and north Japan, then kill everyone else, then kill your former allies.

Unify Japan, get Defensive in the process and fill 3 first ideas, Annex Korea then take the Dragon Throne for yourself and whole China.
Much better than colonize stuff that will take ages to pay off.

I like exploration purely for moving capital to Oceania, then trade company solves all unrest issues and provides high autonomy land for dealing with absolutism age.

Shogunate is also an extremely powerful government form, wouldn't voluntarily switch out of it since infinite vassal slots + divert trade power is a pretty neat deal. Plus you get to sudoku your daimyos for some extra point income.

But with this sort of build you're looking at teching 3->23 DIP in one go since there is no spacing for religious

Boat your way to Kyushu domination, and Shikoku too if possible. Take a break and let AE cool down (it still matters even in Japan because the shogun WILL GLADLY lose 5 stability to cut you down to size if AE is too high). Get a province boardering Kyoto. Then make friends with as many daimyos as possible. Even liberate some. Declare war on the Shogun, and it forces your allies to your side, and they become your daimyos if you win.

I strongly suggest Otomo or Ouchi though over Shimazu due to serious economic and trade buffs, and Ouchi starts with a castle. It is the difference between "Prussia of the East" and "Britain of the East". Like, how does 250+ net ducates per month sound?

Otomo are best for an economic game, Shimazu are best for a military game.
I'd argue that the Otomo are best overall, since they get an extra missionary and a nice balance between economic and military bonuses with included Siege Ability too.

The only thing they're really missing from their NI set is +Fire Damage.
