Hello again.

Here I am with another AAR. The game is in progress, paused on my computer. I am using my sister's. (She is quite nice once you get to know her.)

Here is the info that every AAR seems to have:
GAME: Europa Universalis II, Mac version, 1.07 (still not quite sure about this.)
SCENARIO: Grand Campaign 1419
COUNTRY: Mameluks
SETTINGS: Normal/Normal. I'm not a masochist. I might be a wimp. Fog of War is off.
MODS: None

So.....

I am an omniscient power known as JOHN. I can completely control a country I choose. I picked the Mameluks.

Let's see here. Their state religion is Shiite. Their provinces are a mix of orthodox Christian and Sunni Moslem, with one Catholic province for good measure (Lebanon.) Their capital is at Cairo in Egypt, with 50,000 heretic Sunnis. They have a center of trade in Alexandria, which doesn't have a great deal of competition, and would be a nice place to send merchants if the Mameluks were sophisticated enough, which they are not. (Trade and Infra 0.) They have two large armies. The Egyptian Army is in Alexandria, and contains 10,000 infantry and 10,000 cavalry. The Syrian Army is not in Syria, and has 10,000 infantry and 12,000 cavalry. Our monarch has a difficult name. He is Sultan al-Mu'aiyad Sheikh. The Sunnis in the Hedjaz are our vassals. They aren't thrilled at that, though. (relations +0.)

Chapter 1

In which three monarchs rule, and our technologies grow a little.

In January 1419, I reduce tolerance for the Shiite religion to zero. That must have confused everyone.
Sultan al-Mu'aiyad Sheikh: We despise the corrupt Shiite religion!
Advisor: Uh, sir.... We are Shiite.
Sultan al-Mu'aiyad Sheikh: Shh!
In the same month, I disband all infantry in the army.
Random Mameluk General: Henceforth, to be in the army, you must have a HORSE!
Random Infantryman: Curses! I think I'll go join the navy. Our strategy book says that the navy is important.
Random Mameluk General: We don't have a navy.
As that illustrates, our domestic policies are not ideal at the moment. However, stability costs are horrendous. So we are content to just give the army a pay cut.

By August, a group of missionaries has reported for duty. They are expensive, so they will wait a while.

The next year arrives. January 1, 1420, the missionaries depart for Catholic Lebanon. This cost 170 ducats, and has a chance of success of 45%. Ouchie. It's worth a shot anyway.

On the 5th of July, some peasants get bored.
Peasant: I'm bored.
Another Peasant: So am I.
Peasant: Let's start a wave of obscurantism!
Another Peasant: Great idea!

So they did. Luckily, nobody actually revolted.
It is at this point I realize that the Hedjaz has cancelled its vassalization. Nice of them, when I had no diplomats to butter them up or anything. (As you may understand, the Cairo School of Diplomacy only trains one or so a year.)

On September 14th, I disband 2,000 cavalry in Samaria, reducing my monthly cost from 1.9 ducats a month to 1.8 ducats a month.

January 1st, 1421 arrives with the news that my merchants now know how to trade.
Sultan al-Mu'aiyad Sheikh: So, you've figured out how to send merchants to centers of trade to increase our income. Doesn't seem like much of a leap of logic, does it?
Trade Researcher: Yes, your majesty.
Sultan al-Mu'aiyad: What took you so long?
Trade Researcher: We were busy discussing swallow migration patterns.
Sultan al-Mu'aiyad: I think I just got closer to a heart attack.
On January 5th, there was an unprovoked revolt in Sinai. Sinai's population was a little over 700. The revolt got nowhere.

On January 14th, 1422, the sultan whose name was difficult to type had a heart attack and died. The Mameluk nobility convened, and chose as his successor Muhammad I, mainly because his name was less of a hassle to write and spell.

Muhammad's first act was to send 6 merchants to Alexandria. A month later, 5 had set up shop and were now generating income. The sixth preferred lounging about with prostitutes.

On March 14th, 1422, Muhammad showed his diplomatic mettle by signing a trade agreement with Venice, the biggest competitors to the Mameluks in Alexandria.

But on the 2nd of April, Muhammad I died. His replacement was a Barsbay, whose skills were at best mediocre. Due to his poor administrative skills, it was estimated that missionaries would be less successful.

On the first of July, the Mameluk army modernized just a little. (Land Tech 1.)

On the first of September, the nation was finally stable. (+3.) There was much rejoicing.
Sultan Barsbay: Yay......

In February 1423, the non-existent navy got slightly more advanced, reportedly because of a local fisherman playing with toy boats in the bathtub.

On the first of March, infrastructure was boosted, with the discovery of the tax collector.
Sultan Barsbay: What news?
Infrastructure Researcher: We learned that if we give each town a special office with a tax collector, we will make more money.
Sultan Barsbay: Are you sure all the various ethnic groups are okay with this idea?
Infra Researcher: Well, the peasants in the test village started sharpening their pitchforks.
Sultan Barsbay: Oh dear.
So only the capital gets this new invention.
Then, on August 7th, the flu season gets bad and a plague wipes out 1000 people in Syria and Judea. Stability suffers. (to +2.)
Messenger: *cough* *wheeze* There's..... a..... plague.... *cough*
Cairo Guard: HOLY SHI'ITE! Stay away!

On the 20th of August, Portugal becomes a vassal of Castile, for no clear reason.

My warmongering eyes notice the Kaliphate is no longer in alliance. This intrigues me (they have a Shiite Arabic province) but my armies are rather small for that, and one of them is on rebel duty in Lebanon in case the missionary fails.

In January 1424, I pause to write this update.

What do you think? Want more? I do plan to continue this game.

They do. I just played another 8 years, and am so fed up with all the different religions that I am considering declaring war on Cyprus just to give away Lebanon.....

But my stability is still in the toilet from the war.....

Wait I'm giving away what's going to happen in the next installment! ;)

Chapter 2

OOC: Thank you for your comments. Moving on....

Chapter 2

In which the crazy Shiites become bellicose

As I start this session of play I notice that the Kaliphate is now allied with the Timurids again. I am disappointed.

On February 3rd, 1424, an Alexandrian merchant of mine goes out of business. To compensate, I send 3 more, and my position of 5 merchants in the CoT is reassumed.

On the 27th of March, I sign a trade agreement with the frankly annoying Nubians. They have nothing to do but bombard Alexandria with traders.

On May 1st, the doom of the Eastern Roman Empire approaches as they lose Morea to the Ottoman Empire.

On November 11th, the populace is baffled by celestial phenomena.
Random Citizen: Look, in the air!
Random Citizen 2: It's a missile test! The Russians are going to nuke us!
Random Citizen: You dunce! It's a meteor.
Prophet of Doom: IT MEANS THE END IS NEAR! THROW OFF YOUR MAMELUK OPPRESSORS BEFORE ARMAGEDDON COMES!
Random Citizens 1&2: OH NO!

Stability suffered (+1) and revolt risk went up slightly.

Disregarding this, the Mameluk leadership decides that they have 20,000 cavalry and want to use them. The ex-vassals in the Hedjaz look like a good target.

So the military gets full pay again.
Entire Military: YAY!

And more cavalry is recruited, as the Egyptian Army moves to Judea and the Syrian Army to Syria (which, incidentally, they had never been in before.)

The Hedjaz is allied to distant Aden and has around 9,000 men in Jordan.

My combined forces are around 22,000 in two groups. I send the declaration on the 25th of January, 1426.
Mameluk messenger: Greetings, former vassals.
Hedjazi sultan: What news, heretic tyrannical types?
Mameluk messenger: Well, we sort of want you to become our vassals again. And we want you to convert to the one true Moslem faith, Shi'ism. In that interest, I deliver to you this declaration of war. Unfortunately, the game system does not let us do both of the stated objectives. So, which will it be?
Hedjazi sultan: Neither, insolent scum. And I will be sure to inform our friends from Aden.
Mameluk messenger: Drat.

And thus the war began. The initial plan was for the Egyptian Mameluk army to engage the Hedjaz in Jordan. But the enemy army headed for the cavalry in Syria, so it was decided that the Egyptian army would stay and wait until the Arabians left. The Arabians did leave, and attacked the Syrian army on February 18th. They fought better than predicted, and destroyed the Syrian Army to a man! Luckily, only around 1,600 of the Hedjazis remained, and the 13,000 strong Egyptian Army began a siege of Amman in Jordan without incident.

But the destruction of the Syrian Army let Mameluk strategists to believe that better training was needed, even at the expense of quantity. These changes were made, but as a result stability slipped. (0.)

On the 3rd of July, a large number of infantry from Aden attacked my besieging army, but were driven off.

On the 17th of August, a diplomatic move of some sort helps relations with Teke.

On June 2nd, the small but tough Hedjaz army in Syria is routed.

On June 10th, 1427, the missionaries in Jordan fail miserably, and the Catholic peasants rebel. I take some time to assemble some cavalry to defeat them.

On June 14th, the massive armies of Aden are removed from the picture, when the Mameluks pay a 25 ducat indemnity. My treasury is stretched thin, but it's worth it.

In late August, the Egyptian Army besieges Mekkah, the last standing Hedjazi province.

Back in Mameluk territory, war exhaustion was being felt.
Random Citizen: I'm sick of this.
Sultan Barsbay: We have one province left to take. It'll be over soon.
Random Citizen: MAKE THE WAR STOP!

On December 4th, the Lebanese rebels are beaten.

On the 16th of May in the next year (1428,) Medina fell to the Mameluks.

On June 9th, there was a grevious error.
Advisor: You see, there is this court faction that believes we should worship squirrels....
Different Advisor (interrupting):Your Majesty, I have uncovered great corruption in our government!
Sultan Barsbay: Eradicate it!
Different Advisor: So I'll get rid of the corruption then? *runs away*
Sultan Barsbay: No, wait! That's not what I meant!

So, in this fashion, an expensive corruption-fighting scheme went into action. It reduced the country's stability (-1) and caused a loan to be taken out.

Apparently, the citizens of Aleppo liked being corrupt. They rose in revolt, 12,000 strong. It required the drafting of yet more cavalry, which was done.

The stability loss affected Mameluk mercantile efforts, and some went out of business. Efforts to increase market share met with mixed success.

On November 25th, Mekkah opened its gates to Mameluk troops. The Hedjaz was finally conquered.

Two days later, peace.
Sultan Barsbay, of the Mameluks: Hello, vanquished enemy.
Sultan Barakat I, of the Hedjaz: Why don't you just take my treasury and begone?
Sultan Barsbay: I will take 50 ducats from your treasury. And you must become Shiite.
Sultan Barakat: How do I do that?
Sultan Barsbay: Well first, you do this little dance.....*
*I know little about Shiite religious rituals. No offense intended to anyone. The same applies to the rest of this AAR.

Thusly, peace was acheived. People were glad, and stability increased (to 0.)

On February 29, 1429, the Royal Cartographic Society announced they had discovered Ile de France, and a big hungry nation of that name. People were confused.

To save money, my army budget was cut, and overall size reduced to 20,000.

On March 17th, a royal marriage was arranged with the newly Shiite Hedjaz.
The Sultan of the Hedjaz was heard to say "I don't care if I was force-converted, this girl is hot!"

On June 8th, Italy erupted in war, for no clear reason.

On December 2nd, a royal marriage was arranged with Oman, thus giving the Mameluks marital ties to every Shiite country in the world.

On March 6, 1430, some smart guy diverted the Nile river, and created prosperous new farmland. (New Land Claimed in Cataract. Population +2000, Manpower +1, Base Tax Value +1.)

On October 1st, the Timurid government collapsed, leading to the creation of a 3-province, independent Baluchistan. Which was Shiite, too.

In February 1431, I lost market share in Alexandria again.

On July 23, Milan became a Swiss vassal. Their pacifist phase evidently has not yet started.

On September 8th, the following dialog was overheard in Cairo:
Advisor: SHEEP FIGHT!
Sultan Barsbay: What?
Advisor: The Ak Koyunlu, or "White Sheep," declared war on the Qara Koyunlu, or "Black Sheep."
Sultan Barsbay: I see.
Advisor: Anyone placing bets?

On December 1st, I managed 4 merchants in Alexandria.

On August 3rd 1432, the Timurid Empire attempted to end the pathetic existence of Baluchistan.

On October 10th, Castile begins a war against one-province Granada.

December 7th, Sultan Barsbay creates an ordinance outlawing the use of camels as a means of payment. Tax value in Alexandria goes up.

On May 2nd 1433, Baluchistan is reduced to a one-province Sunni rump state.

On July 1st, I manage to pay off that stupid loan.

On September 24th, Granada is annexed by Castile, ending the existance of the last Moslem state in Iberia. And I take a break. Whee.

Chapter 3

OOC: This AAR will conclude after this update. It seems I am king of the one-day AAR. Thank you for commenting.

Chapter 3

In which two wars commence and conclude

The Mameluks had a problem. They had a large and potentially rich country. But, all provinces were different religions, and the ruling class had to try and accomodate everyone. Finally, an innovative solution to the problem was devised.
Sultan Barsbay: Boy, am I sick of those Catholics.
Advisor: You aren't a good enough administrator to convert them.
Sultan Barsbay: I'll ignore that comment for now, shall I?
Advisor: We could simply get rid of the province.
Sultan Barsbay: But there are no vassals we can grant that include that province.
Advisor: There is Cyprus, my lord.
Sultan Barsbay: Cyprus? They're a small Greek-speaking island in the Eastern Mediterannean, known for production of copper.
Advisor: Very good. But that's not what I mean, sire. You see, the foul heretic crusaders that own the island claim Lebanon as their own.
Sultan Barsbay: So we can get into a war with them, and give the place away?

A course of action decided upon, the army left Lebanon. But the realm wasn't quite stable enough (+0) to launch an unprovoked war. So the Mameluks twiddled their thumbs, and lost market share in Alexandria.

On the 25th of November, 1433, a certain advisor burst into the sultan's study.
Advisor: The sheep war has concluded!
Sultan Barsbay: So?
Advisor: The entire palace placed bets on their favorite color sheep.
Sultan Barsbay: Who won?
Advisor: The White Sheep, my lord. The Black Sheep gave up one of their sheep-shearing provinces.

On April 9, some nobles try their hand at extortion, demanding export licences, or else they would set the royal couch on fire, and also cause great instability in the realm. So the nobles got their money, and the royal couch stayed un-burnt.

*Ahem* Continuing on, in June stability finally increased. (+1.) This was good enough. On June 4th, war was declared on the island nation of Cyprus.

As soon as another diplomat was available, peace was offered, along with the pesky province of Lebanon. However, Cyprus refused, for reasons known only to them.

On July 11th, the Cypriot army landed in Aleppo, and started a siege. This was unacceptable. 10,000 cavalry paid a visit, and by the 27th, the Cypriot army ceased to exist.
Sultan Barsbay: Now that your army has departed to another plane of existance, are you willing to negotiate? Keep in mind that our nation could squash yours like a bug if we wanted to.
King Jannus of Cyprus: You have no navy.
Sultan Barsbay: Aside from that, I mean.
King Jannus: What do you have in mind?
Sultan Barsbay: We would like you to take the province of Lebanon from us.
King Jannus: Uhhh, may I ask why? *hastily* Not like I would refuse, of course.
Sultan Barsbay: We want to burden you with LEBANON, THE PROVINCE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON! Its annual tax contribution is -17 ducats. Its primary resource is crud between toes. The populace has participated in 50 revolts in the last 10 years. But, if you do not accept, WE WILL DESTROY YOU!
King Jannus (to an advisor): I'd better accept. This guy might get angry. *signs treaty*
*Sultan Barsbay rubs hands with glee*

Thusly, on August 17th, the Mameluk entity no longer contained Lebanon. Thusly, one competing religion was eliminated.

Actually, this isn't my last update. I lied. *cackle* This isn't the end of my notes, but I'm getting tired, so the remainder will come later.

It's a pity that this AAR will be ending. Can't you make a new negotation with your sister, surely it will seem as nothing compared to the skill of diplomacy needed in getting rid of Lebannon.

Anyway, thus far this was my favorite bit.

The Sultan of the Hedjaz was heard to say "I don't care if I was force-converted, this girl is hot!"

Heh, if you need help, give me a pm, and I would gladely explain it in length, though I am a heretical sunni ;)
This is one of the things I couldnt understand in EU2, shia Islam and sunni Islam arent really different "sects" just different schools. Why I think they should just rename it to Islam. *shurgs* Who am I to say that, great AAR by the way :D

Chapter 3.5

Chapter 3.5

See chapter 3

Our story resumes in May 1535, during which yet another Mameluk merchant went out of business. (Now only one left. THEY'RE ALL IMBECILES I TELL YOU!)

More bad news came on the 16th of October, when a court scandal broke. Of all the countries, it had to affect The Hedjaz, who I had finally nursed to positive relations, and was trying to butter up for alliance/vassal/bleh. So now I have to try again.....

Then, Barsbay took a risk, and decided to attack Ak Koyunlu. For one thing, they had a core province of ours.
Sultan Barsbay: And that is why we should attack the heretics! They have a province that is rightly ours.... Nubuck! errr.... I mean.... Nussaybin!
Advisor: Well said, my lord.
This was a particularly good time, it was said, because the Ak Koyunluan army was busy locking horns with the Timurids in Persia. However, once war was declared on October 5, 1436, the Sheep all came back. Drat. My all-cavalry armies did a fairly good job, even when they were fighting with 50% maintanence, but Ak Koyunlu had the advantage of numbers, and on February 24th 1437 my siege force was driven from Kirkuk. (I still had soldiers in Nussaybin.) Then, in April, Poor Government Policies reduced my stability to -2.

In other news, on July 18th the Ottomans declared war on Byzantium. They'll be finished soon.

Meanwhile, in Nussaybin, my armies held off 12,000 Ak Koyunlu sheep-riders, but only had around 4k left. The next Sheepish attack left me with 1,390, who retreated. The victorious Ak Koyunlu besieged Syria.

In the midst of this, the amusingly named Jaqmaq (say that fast. Jaqmaq!) became Sultan.

On July 12, 1438, the Ak Koyunlu army took Syria. Then, they..... wandered off into the Golden Horde somewhere? I took advantage and retook Syria.

In Europe, I was able to add to the list of suicidal minors, as Moldavia declared war on Lithuania.

On March 9, 1439, I ignored some corruption, low on money as I was.

On August 6th, I paid 25 ducats to end the war with Ak Koyunlu. And I had such high hopes....

On January 1st, I ended the game. Or at least my notes.

END

In Conclusion:
The Mameluks are a difficult country because of religion alone. You need to convert, which requires money, so maybe if you're doing this you shouldn't get in as many wars as I did. You only make maybe 50% of a province's tax value with stability low, so again, control that war-mongering urge! If you can stomach it, getting rid of Lebanon is a good idea. If you aren't going to absolutely blitz the place with missionaries, give it to Cyprus. I'm sure they'll be glad. :p Cavalry armies are the way to go, as you have lots of plains and deserts. A navy isn't really necessary early on, though I sometimes wished for one. But if you enjoy force-converting, it's what the Mameluks do. And it helps victory points if you care about that. I finished with 47.

Why not just do some changes with the game and turn the Mamelucks into sunnis as they are historicaly?
