So I've been playing my first real game nice and slowly as the Duke of Connacht and I've managed to conquer most of the British isles. Problem is, my county holdings are all concentrated in Northern Ireland, where the counties are tiny and can't grow any larger. I want to shift my core holdings and capital to southern England based around my control of Essex/Wessex, but I don't know how. How do you 'move' your capital to another county if at all?

As HRE and England I have tried to move my capital back to it's traditional home just to see if I could.

Has anyone done this as I can't?

Ah, thanks! Also, if I do shift capitals, what happens to my tech progress? Will my Legalism research have to start from scratch again, or will I retain any benefits from my research in my first capital?

The tech is tied to the county. You'll get whatever level of legalism is present in your new capital.

One extra benefit of shifting the capitol is an event that some times triggers to instantly change both the culture and religion to your own (negating the penalties associated with recently conquered counties of other religions/cultures).

Actually you can move the capital countless times as a duke so long as you moving between the traditional capital of each duchy. So if you dont own the capital of a duchy that you want, just revoke from whoever is the current owner. Then make that duchy your primary title and shift your capital to that county, allowing you to plot to revoke every county de jure of that duchy. Personally i do this all the time when I'm a multi-duke so as to keep my lands culturally pure :p.

Same applies for kingdoms if you are a king of multiple kingdoms, though you can only do it for duchy where the traditional kingdom capital is located.
