I will follow Senator Romano's lead, whenever he decides. He has been our wise and good leader as a moderate Conservative, God knows he will perservere.

This is wonderful news and I hope you will convince others in your party to support my Patriotic coalition against the Liberale government. Gen. Zepeda and Col. Carrera believe your party is the greatest threat facing Chile. Gen. Zapeda will also not be on the ballot for President unless he enters a primary.

The way I see it, the Liberales ARE in fact the greatest threat for Chile at this moment. Its policies towards land were disasterous, especially to those whose lands were confiscated. Futhermore, they have sought to outlaw us as a political party, something that is detrimental to all Chileans, not just the people of my party. And to top it all off, they oppose liberation of the Cuyo and Patagonia regions, something that is vehemently and adamantly unacceptable to our people and to those who cry out for liberation.

Señor Presidente Badajoz, your time is up. To quote the hundreds of Arabs that somehow made it to Chile and to my fair province of Bío-Bío, "Ash-sha`b yurid isqat an-nizam(The people want to bring down the regime)" . Your policies are disasterous beyond a reasonable doubt and they must come to an end. Viva Chile, Viva il pievels da Chile/Viva las pueblos de Chile!

This seems incredibly uncalled for slander against my person and the party of the people. You Hawks will go blindly into war without thinking of the political consequences, which is why I support a limited war, taking land which would not set off the alarm bells of the big boys in the GP club.

And what about those people of those unredeemed lands. Should we not have a concern for them, since they are suffering under the Argentines, especially the people of the Cuyo. To me, any day that we delay liberating the Cuyo and Patagonia regions will be a great dishonor and a huge slap in the face for the people of these lands who wait for Chile to liberate them but die seeing their collective dreams unfulfilled.

I send this letter as an letter for the people of Chile, but it is also a very stern warning for you, Señor Presidente. The Chilean citizens of Mendoza, San Luis, La Rioja, Neuquén, Rio Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, and San Juan need liberation from their vile Argentinian overlords.

Perhaps you've forgotten our long-established ties with Argentina in fighting for independence from Spain. Ties that allowed us to make these cities and these shores Chilean, cities we hold no less dear than Santa Cruz. If we attack our allies and lose, what will happen to all of that? All you care for is Chileans outside of our government, so much that you will paint this house pretty but leave the whole damn structure rotten.

Long established ties? Ha!! They stole the land that was rightfuly ours during the dark days of the revolution before things turned in our favor. The Argentinians are nothing but theives and liars, and the coalition proposed by General Zepeda, composed of Moderate-Liberales, Nacionales, and Conservadores, will gain my vote. I support his nominee as an Independent, and urge others to as well.

((As long as he gains support to run as an Independent, I see no reason why he shouldn't be able to run. 4-5 supporters should be enough to get his name on the ballot, IMHO))

If we should take all their lands, and then be contained by a power greater than ours? We didnt win our freedom to be subject to European tyranny again.

We will not take all of the Argentinian land, only the land that is rightfuly Chilean, and has Chileans living on it. We will not gather the attention of foreign powers, as we will be in the right, taking back the land that is rightfuly ours. We would be no different than the German states.

(The lands rightfully Chilean would cost 30 BB, as Thunderhawk said. Unless he edits the game, which he should not, we cannot take all our land in one go.)

The 1841 Primary

The 1841 primaries saw President Michael Badajoz's fragile coalition crack and then shatter. Even at the beginning of the primaries, some of the moderate Conservadores urged their fellows to abandon the coalition and nominate their own candidate, Armando de Vasces, as President. Early in the race, Senator Romano - the architect of the Romano compromise and the de facto leader of the moderates by many's standards - stood behind the President. Even so, the coalition threatened to unravel when General Zepeda, hero of the Chilean-Bolivian War and previously a supporter of Badajoz, announced his independent candidacy.

Francisco Rivera was as good as his word and returned to run against Badajoz as the sole candidate for the newly formed Partido Nacional. However, his party also faced new challenges. First was the formation of the Partido Monárquico, which shared many of their party ideals but supported the installation of king in Chile. Rivera faced an immediate split in his party over whether to resist these Monarchists or ally with them. President Badajoz too viewed the Monarchists as dangerous. A large portion of the Congreso wished to ban the Monarchists, but they eventually accrued enough influential supporters in the upper house to make such a ban impossible. The Monarchists would run a candidate for the presidency.

An additional jolt occurred in the primary process when General Zepeda announced he wished to run as an independent. In his first press conference, Zepeda revealed his plans for Chile: the reconquest of Chilean territorial claims in Argentina. This plan shocked the political establishment, who viewed Zepeda as a liberal. Suddenly, this General Zepeda was looking much more attractive to the Nacionales.

The primary proceeded with considerable confusion - between the four parties and uncertainly over whether Zepeda could run as independent for President, as he proposed. Scrutiny of election laws eventually revealed that he couldn't; while he could legally be elected as President without a party's endorsement, he could not appear on the ballot. With no time to call a convention before the election, Zepeda was left with a choice...

Primary Candidates

Liberales Candidate:
Michael Badajoz, (b. 1805) ((zagoroth)) - The sitting president of the Republic, Senator Badajoz represents the moderate Liberales and the party of power in Santiago. A fighter in the revolution himself and still exceptionally young at 36, he took an unusual pro-war and even jingoistic stance with respect to the Potosi and Arequipa regions, leading to their annexation by Chile in his last term. He believes in expanded citizenship to encourage immigration, liberal economic policies, but generally opposes attacking Argentina without just cause. Badajoz is vehemently opposed to the Monárquicos.

Conservadores Candidate:
Armando de Vasces, (b. ????) ((OConner)) - Described as a "new moderate" by the friendly papers and in less glowing terms by the unfriendly ones, Armando de Vasces believes in a moderate level of government intervention in the economy and catholicism as the state religion. He is particularly in favor of expanded educational spending, and has proposed the National Education Bill. During the deficit period, de Vasces advocated higher taxes to fund the military, but with the balanced budget restored he quickly dropped the proposal.

Nacionales Candidate:
Francisco Rivera, (b. 1798) ((atomicsoda)) - Rivera is a young but ambitious Senator from Santiago who ran against President Badajoz last term, losing narrowly. He runs on his old standby platform of "Strong Military, Strong Industry," and comes from an aristocratic background. He is viewed as the de facto leader of the Nacionales, and remains a rabid jingo and is a vocal supporter of war with Argentina.

Monárquicos Candidates:
Witold Tamiuszski, (b. 1801) ((tamius23)) - Witold Tamiuszki has long been one of the few vocal supporters of a monarch in the Congreso. He decided to run for the Presidency on one issue and one issue only: a Chilean monarch for Chile.

Emilio Hernandez de Caviezel, (b. 1794) ((hoi2geek)) - Emilio Hernandez is considered the founder and champion of the Monarchist movement and de facto leader of the Monarchist party. He is an aggressive jingo and favors war with Argentina in addition to the installation of a Czar in Chile. He is an absolutist and has called the Liberales "the greatest threat to Chile."

Unity Candidate:
Fernando Zepeda:, (b. ????) ((thekinguter)) - Fernando Zepeda has been the unknown in this election. The war hero general often credited with the liberation of the Potosi region, Zepeda has recently emerged as an expansionist. He claims that large parts of Argentina are Chile's by right and that the regions should be retaken militarily. His comments have sparked a debate about the reconquest of Patagonia. He has also advocated increased taxes and educational spending. Originally a liberal, he has now abandoned the liberal ticket to run as an independent, risking total loss of his candidacy if no parties agree to back him.

-------------------------

Player Actions Needed:
Everyone wave to the spambots! (Not really, it probably encourages them or something.)

Pay attention now, because this is complicated. Zepeda will not stand in the general election if he does not receive the support of at least one party. The Liberales, Conservadores, and Nacionales do not need to vote on a candidate - they each only have one candidate - but they do need to vote on coalitions and unity tickets with each other! Monarchists still have to vote for a candidate.

So:

Monárquicos, vote for a monarchist candidate for Presidente. (Tamiuszski/Hernandez)

Everyone vote on party coalitions. (Coalition With Zepeda/Any Party/No Coalition) and in the event of a coalition, who you would like to the Coalition Candidate.

Vote on the National Education Act (Yes/No). (Original can be found [post=12943939]here[post].

A sample ballot for the Monárquicos would appear:
Party: Monárquicos
Candidate: Tamiuszski
Coalition: No Coalition
Coalition Candidate: Tamiuszski ((This is who you want to be the Presidential candidate in the event of a coalition.))
National Education Act: Yes

A sample ballot for any other party would appear:
Party: Nacionales
Coalition: Coalition with Zepeda
Coalition Candidate: Rivera
National Education Act: No

If you wish to vote for more than one Coalition, you may do so:
Party: Conservadores
Coalition: Coalition with Zepeda, Nacionales
Coalition Candidate: Zepeda ((You can elaborate further in this row if need be.))
National Education Act: Abstain

I realize this is complicated, but it's the only way to maintain some semblance of a democratic process. If a candidate withdraws and leaves a party without a candidate, the party will not automatically enter coalition. (This is a technicality.)

EDIT: I almost forgot, CANDIDATES CAN VOTE in this particular election and make a difference because of their coalition preferences, if any.

I'll give this one three days to vote, ending 6 PM PST (4 AM GMT, I believe) on the 14th. I may cut it short if we get enough votes in quickly (25 or more by two days from now).

Edit: Put Zepeda down as Coalition leader, and Rivera for the Conservadores if a coalition is made with them))

Oh, sorry about that. You are choosing, in the event of the coalition vote succeeding, who you want to be the Presidential candidate.
