But I'm not sure how to apply the shading. It should be relatively simple -- I have the tool, and I've read the instructions -- but I can't figure out even from the instructions exactly how to do it. Duh.

Contacted Castellon, and he did offer help, but he said I should check the graphics forum first to see if someone there could do it. I remember seeing one of those -- perhaps for Vicky or EU II? -- but I don't see a Flag Request thread in EU III. Only Birger's instructions.

So... where from here?

When I got mine initially, I went over to OT and asked. Someone usually comes along in between the smart-ass replies. The EUII request thread is pretty dead these days. I had a request over there and only got another smart-ass answer in reply. You might also contact Cat Lord as he has helped folks in the past. Good luck. Looks nice so far.

There was a thread in HOI2 modding where people could submit requests for flags/shields in different formats (HOI, Vicky, etc). Assuming it's still there someone should be able to help you out. If not I guess start a thread in general modding and hope some kind soul with the know-how comes along.

In July of 1558, we finally were able to successfully convert the Moors of Granada to the Catholic faith. More work remained, but this left only two Islamic provinces on the Iberian Peninsula, only one of which was ours to control.

We also got one of those unpleasant events which holds back tech development. Oh well.

My trade was rocking! I got a monopoly in Vlaanderen, and started competing well (because of the bonus) in Ahmadabad. These two CoTs were the top 2 in the world. I started grabbing some great income, which I think I showed you already.

We lost one of our best generals.

Decided to start converting on the other side of the Sea. Might as well have our cores on our side of the religious divide, to improve the economy, as well as bring us closer to our goals.

My colonization in southern Brazil continues. Got to get some population down there, to improve my economy, and to better enable me to protect these lands! Portugal's too close...

Now, this is an interesting sidenote…

This should have an interesting outcome, I expect. Portugal doesn’t border their capital, so complete victory (or even significant warscore) might be difficult without my allowing military access. But they might manage to capture some more of Morocco. Castile and England joined in war with her, making victory more likely, as England might find her way to invade the capital. Could be an interesting outcome!

While you’re at it, you might take note of those 5 merchants who’ve been earning me significant income (around 200 ducats a year!) from Vlaanderen, and the 4 who’ve become established in Ahmadabad. Those, by the way, are the two top-ranked COTs in the whole world!

Inexplicably, I’ve actually become a trading power because of that East India Company event! Now, it remains to be seen whether I’ll be able to keep it up, or if my merchants will be slaughtered like Christians by the Boxers of China!

Another interesting point from that screenie (at the very bottom, in the gamelog) – Wurttemburg changed to an administrative government! That would be of concern, except that they’re already a vassal. If I lose the vassalization, ever, I would have difficulty diploannexing. As it is, I don’t think it will affect anything.

Now… At Christmastime (actually, New Year’s 1560), I get my yearly income, and decide that I will spend the portion I’m not going to keep in reserve for colonization.

I had a “natives abused” event, and decided to aid the natives, which gave me a bonus to colonization. I’m going after, this time, Florida and Caracas.

Caracas has the added benefit that the natives are already converted, thanks to the Castilians, who lost that province to natives not long ago. Florida hasn’t that benefit, but it’s nearby to Cuba. Interestingly, it will put me in contiguous contact with the Creek Nation. I’m curious to see how that turns out.

Then, another little windfall profit drops in my lap…

I shall use him to replace the one-star traderdude who I used to replace the two-star whatsis who I replaced about a year ago because I didn’t have anyone over one-star to use for that purpose. This is a definite improvement!

So, Milan is finally becoming the trade power it was intended to be. Colonization will certainly help this along, or it should, in game mechanics I dont know. May peace reign for some time as you colonize the world in Milan's image.

That tech advisor should do much to make up for the lack of military skill of your monarch. And nice work converting and colonizing, not to mention trading. I was going to ask - do you have any plans, while you have the trading co. event, to spread out into Asian trading houses? They are rich and the competition might be less, or so I have read.

I hasten to add that I am not expecting Milan to seek war against the naval alliance. It's just that Castille has found another sucker in its futile quest to destroy Milan.

It's not Milan's fault that the natives prefer Italian cuisine.

The time to concentrate a little more on the colonies is at hand. That will fit in with this period of peaceful expansion.

With a burgeoning colonial empire I have to concur with Chief Ragusa that a naval advisor might be useful. What good are far-flung empires if your merchant fleet gets cut to ribbons? And it's such a shame to see the proud Count traderdude and the venerable whatsis leave your service, but such are the demands of state.
