all dreadnaughts were scattled after the washington treaty, they did have superdreadnaught class BBs aka Queen Elisabeth class in service and the 2 BC (Renown class) and ofc the Hood which is not really a BC but rather a fast BB (31 Kn, 303mm belt 8x15" guns doesnt fit a BC)

and no, not historicly ..its cheaper to build a new one then overhaul a ship like that

What about the old cruiser to flat top conversion experiments back in the day?

Is this really historical? Did navies really spend the time to upgrade ships like battleships/carriers?

Typically no. Building a new ship was only marginally more expensive, and why have 1, when you can have a crappy second one as well, if only to train recruits. Only limits like the Washington Naval Treaty made countries consider it. There are only a handful of examples in the WW2 period, particularly Italy upgrading its BS.

For historical purposes, you could also look at the extensive rebuilds the US did on the surviving battleships from Pearl Harbor. While not quite as extensive as the Italian/Japanese battleship rebuilds, they were still quite different from the ships at rest on the 6th of December. USS California and USS West Virginia for example got extra armour (including much enlarged anti-torpedo bulges) and a completely new set of secondary armament. Comparison photos of them pre and post war appear to be nothing like each other. These rebuilds took about 2-2.5 years to complete, with both back to serving with the Navy during 1944.

How long would it have taken to build a new BB from scratch?

Which ship components are upgradeable?

Hi,
i cannot keep in mind which ship components (surface and submarine) are upgradeable. So iam often in the situation waiting for some special research before starting to build ships (yes i mostly play nations which cannot have huge navy).

I can remember that the secret tech "electric torbedo (or similar)" is upgradeable but normal uboot torpedos are not, is this right?
Can i say that in general all techs are upgradable which are highlighted in the ship construction window (before building a new ship, you can select some components but some of these pulldown menus have lighter color)?

I am pretty sure that the following things cannot be upgraded:

Armor
Engine
Main armament

Anti-air armament is upgradable and I am sure any torpedoes are as well. Not sure about the submarine sensors.

How long would it have taken to build a new BB from scratch?
USS Massachusetts (BB-59), the last Battleship completed before Pearl Harbor, took almost 3 years from Keel Laying to commissioning.
USS Alabama (BB-60), the last Battleship started before Pearl Harbor, took barely 2 years (the war obviously sped things up).
USS Iowa (BB-61), the first Battleship started after Pearl Harbor, took almost 3 years (a larger ship than the South Dakotas?).

EDIT: Oops, I take that back. The Iowa was started before Pearl Harbor. No Battleships were started after Pearl Harbor.

Well, technically both USS Illinois and USS Kentucky were laid down after Pearl Harbor, but they were never completed. HMS Vanguard was laid down 2 months before, which would I believe make it the last battleship laid down and completed. Also, the Alaska class cruisers were laid down after Pearl Harbor and completed before the war ended; despite their name they were practically as big as real battleships or battlecruisers.

Hmm, I was only talking about the USA. Didn't think to check on the Alaska-class "large" cruisers.

Upgrade Ships

All I wanted to do was upgrade the aa gun and asw not the armour and main guns. And Navies did upgrade older ships. This is the two upgrades for the Queen Elizabeth by UK:

She was rebuilt twice between the world wars. In 1926–1927 bulges were added, the funnels were trunked, four 4 inch guns were added, and a new foretop was installed. In her 1937-1941 rebuild she was fitted with a tower bridge in place of her old bridge; her 6 inch (152 mm) guns were removed and in their place received 20 4.5 in (114 mm) guns and several smaller anti-aircraft guns; horizontal armour was added; engines and boilers were replaced; and the elevation of her main battery was increased to 30 degrees. Deck armour was increased to 5 inches over the magazines, 2.5 inches over the machinery, while the new 4.5" guns had between 1 and 2 inches of armour.[2] She also received facilities for aircraft with a launching catapult amidships.[1] New fire control equipment was installed, including the HACS MkIV AA fire control system and the Admiralty Fire Control Table Mk VII for surface fire control of the main armament. This reconstruction was completed in January 1941, when Britain had been at war for over a year.

It took time but they did it. Even the armour.

Anyway after much trail and error I finally got the last mod installed and it appears the ships do upgrade. Although very slowly. Now I just have to figure out why my interceptor planes will upgrade stats but the picture is still the Glouster bi-plane.

Of course a bi-plane that can go 510 kph is really awesome. Just not realistic.

Any ideas for this?

The HMS Hood was due for amour upgrades etc, but she was too needed to be able to be withdrawn from service. Bad mistake.
I really don't like this idea as an inclusion in the game, but it is good for personal mucking about and testing.
Most WWI BBs had extensive refits and upgrades, but the ships still essentially remained the same class. Upgrading a Revenge class to a KGV does not make sense to me. They are too different. You could suppose the the upgrade is simply a crew switching to a newly built ship, that would be a better abstraction than having a ship drydock and be rebuilt in a way that never would have happened.
The ship models system works ok for for smaller vessels, but I think battleships classes were too unique to be well modelled with this generic 10 model system. The QE class for instance is a much better ship than the following Revenge class, but this system will always define the Revenge as having higher stats. I have been thinking about whether the extra research tabs like D-Day made could be used for unique battleship models with individual upgrade paths. That would allow for far more accurate modelling of each different ship's strengths and weakness. The techs in the capital ships tab would unlock nation specific unique battleship classes as well as allowing unique upgrade paths for every battleship class. It would be a tricky mod, but would be possible and work really well.
I like the nicknames given to HMS Renown and HMS Repulse. They were in drydock etc so often they were called HMS Refit and HMS Repair. British ships sure had great names too,

Didn't they start building the lead ship of the Montana class in 1942?
