Yhea, i agree with you. This bug breaks the hole upgrade system. Dosen't that disturb the rest of you guys?

After reading some threads regarding various features of SF, I got the feeling that most of the players consider this whole concept as needles micromanagment. It seems to be something to consider for flavour loving players and widely neglected by powergamers who prefer to calculate things.

Sry if this has been posted already, didnt read all the pages, but i believe ive figured out a way to automatically upgrade the equipment of a ship. It wont upgrade its class but it will upgrade the parts similar to how the AA and radar etc is upgraded. Not the most historical but for those that want to go into your HOI III folder, technologies and open Naval technologies.

From there it will show you all Naval techs you can research. On every technology that creates new equipments - such as armament, armour etc. At the bottom of the tech itll say can_upgrade = no. Change it to a yes. Im about to try it out but theoretically it should allow them to be upgraded automatically, like the AA is. This however will mean your upgrade IC is gonna be...a lot.

It did.

Works like a charm, only drawback of course is IC. Gathering Storm as Japan - 189 or so IC, 172 for max upgrades. Obviously this can be fixed by only allowing a set number of points to upgrades, and just slowly upgrade your units. Nevertheless it works.

Edit: Also when your ships finish all upgrades necessary, the class name will update.

This was knows since the original Hoi 3 came out :D
But even with this you could see for example a class change from Revenge/Queen Elizabeth to King George V even if you only upgraded your AA Radar etc.

No.
Let's see this scenario:
Revenge:
Everything on it is lvl 1 (Guns, armour, AA, etc)
Queen Elizabeth:
Same az Revenge but armour and aa is lvl 2

you start to upgrade the AA and radar on revenge and after a while you will se that the ship become a QE because the game engine calculates that it's components are closer to the original QE than to the Revenge. (these list can be found in units/models directory).

so is it still useful to mod the files to be able to upgrade armor, engine, etc?

It is an option because of the bug present in the new upgrade function. But I consider that great exploit. When you upgrade guns or engines, the ship can't be used at least for severl months. The old upgrade allows you to interupt the process any time fight.

Yes, but that allowed you to upgrade ship while you could still use it freely, right? This method is more "clean" since you have to dock it for quite some time :)

I haven't got SF yet. I was playiong ICE version of HOI3 and noticed that my ships were not upgrading the aa guns and so on. They used to before I reinstalled. Is there a way to fix this? I know nothing of modding but if someone can give me an example for battleships and the specific file and the location that needs edited I would like to fix it. I liked the slow upgrade process. flecha224 said something about upgrading in the quote above. I hope someone can explain it to me. Thanks

I think this should be a bit restricted. Not every battleship could be equally upgraded. The game would remember the start ship and based on this restrict it furthest upgrade. Also depending on the base type it would modify statistics by a few notches.

Is this really historical? Did navies really spend the time to upgrade ships like battleships/carriers?

If I recall correctly Britain still had dreadnoughts fighting in WW2.

The SHBB will not upgrade, because is a single design, I just copied and pasted all the naval units, didn´t realize about the SHBB

Units upgrades or updates, infantry to mountain, or infantry1 to infantry2, are not supposed to give practicals

well some ppl allready changed the SHBB to upgrade with techs (as it should be)

beside, HOI 1 had this in the game and it was removed because it did not make sense to upgrade a Queen Elisabeth BB to a king George V class then, as it does now...

Only very few ships got new main batteries replaced (if at all) or engines.

I like the ICE aproach when all ships upgrade thier secondary batterys and AA guns with time (and techs)

upgradeing the old BBs to new ones is just wrong...

all dreadnaughts were scattled after the washington treaty, they did have superdreadnaught class BBs aka Queen Elisabeth class in service and the 2 BC (Renown class) and ofc the Hood which is not really a BC but rather a fast BB (31 Kn, 303mm belt 8x15" guns doesnt fit a BC)

and no, not historicly ..its cheaper to build a new one then overhaul a ship like that
