I just started playing this game and I'm wondering if there's some secret to building cities in the alternate worlds? I've tried a couple settlers in different spots and they just won't start a city. I don't know if it's the terrain or that certain alternate worlds are uninhabitable or maybe I just don't know how to start a city? I'm right clicking on the settlers unit and hitting the button in the lower left corner.

Right clicking? You mean from the unit details pop-up screen? Select the unit as you would to move and use the build button on the main screen as you would normally.
Having settled in a few alternate worlds, I've seen no special restrictions (or even problems).
Remember, however, you cannot settle on a special tile (which would include the mystic portal square) or within 4 hexagons of another city. The build button also provides information if you can't build - what does it say?
