networking for dummies required

Hi everyone,
My statement: I have very little knowledge about networking computers.

I have 2 computers, both with ethernet card, one runs NT and the (other my friends) has Win98. Can we setup a multiplayer EU game? Is it easy? What software do I install?

help would be appreciated

thanks!

PS Also can we save in multiplayer EU?

How far apart are the two computers? I'm guessing they are in the same house so you could just go and buy a null modem cable and connect them to each other with that. That would mean you could play two-player without having to worry about connection speeds, ect. Not quite sure if EU2 supports this sort of multiplay though. Another option is setting up a LAN and if you have a fast internet connection (dsl) you can play together and with all the people on Valkyrienet.

No--a null-modem will be way too slow. If both machines have an ethernet card, then definitely network them. You don't even need a hub--just use a crossover cable directly from computer to computer. Seven bucks. If you have a hub, do a regular network. This game actually plays pretty well with two people over a network. Have fun.

How do you do it? I got the easy part: two ethernet cards, and a ethernet cable. Then what? How do you set it up?

Well, first you have to make sure your cable is a crossover cable. You can buy them that way, or make them yourself by cutting the plug off one end of the cable and rearranging the wires before putting a new plug on it. Like this: http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00009.asp

It looks more complicated than it is, but if that intimidates you, just buy one. Plug the computers together net card to net card. As long as your NIC cards are functional, you have a network. At this point *in theory* heheh, you should be able to play a network game of EU2. If you have trouble, send me an email. xanadu@softcom.net

When you install the NIC some protocols may or may not get installed automatically. Right-click on Network Neighbourhood and choose properties, you will see what's there. Easiest on a crossover cable link is netbeui then ipx, tcpip you have to configure. If there are none you will have to add at least one.

If you decide to use TCP/IP(which could be a good idea if you decide to share a internet connection) You have to define Ip-adr. for the computers...

TCP/IP adr. consists of four numbers seperated by a '.' The first 3 should be the same on both computers fx:

10.0.0.x

x should be a different number with each computer ranging from 2-255

Subnet should be 255.255.255.0 on all the computers on the LAN

If you Decide to use IPX( it is alot easier to setup) all you have to do is to add the protocol and then make sure that both computers use the same frametype, preferably 802.3, and then your of to your network game. Simple as that !

If something needs clarification, don't hesitate to ask or pm me !

in network properties load TCP-IP and Client for Microsoft Networks

on one machine, under the TCP-IP properties set the IP address to be 192.168.0.1
on the other machine set the ip address to 192.168.0.2 that should do it.

Some help?

I have a USB cable connecting two PCS and file sharing is working.

Now, I want to have my boys be able to multiplay EU but I'm not sure what to do since I can't get past the multiplayer screen for choosing scenario and country for "local area" as "host".

So I get to that screen and select grand campaign and Novgorod. And then it has the computer name appear with the country in the left-hand corner:

Penelope Novgorod

The other computer (a laptop) is at the multiplayer screen where is says "join game" but there is no game to join.

I did set the IP addy for both to the values you guys said to above. WHat do I do now? In the bottom center of the screen there is a cursor that blinks.. what is that about? Am I supposed to type something in there?

Thanks in advance for any help.

My first guess would be the ip adr of the host

I will try to install the game on my other comp and see what happens

hmm Something must be wrong with your setup or it just doesn't work with USB

'Cause I could see the host immediately. I'm not familiar with USB network, are you entirely sure you have configured the TCP/IP for the USB??

I think I need some extra info, before I can help you.

And if I get it, I'm not entirely sure I can help anyway...:D
