I was intrigued by the following part of the announcement post:

"... server hosting will be worked into the game."

I think this is key to getting the multi-player game working smoothly.
One of the biggest headaches with setting up large groups is
to coordinate everyone. If you could join a game in progress
this would make this much easier.

I think that you are correct. I believe that Johan etc badly wanted the multiplayer to work in EU. They tried so hard but, I understand, it never quite got there.
With Server Hosting a lot of problems go.

I don't think they're talking about removing LAN support. I think
what they are talking about is being able to set up a dedicated
server. This should make things more stable. I'm also hoping that
with a dedicated server a player could join after the game has
already started. Although this might be a bit too much to ask.

I'm not trying to puncture any thought of a glorious internet-play EU, but IMHO, it will sugffer from the same problem as Civ2 online, that is the game is normally too long to finish in one session and will thus never get past say 1500.

Hmmm. There would have to be time limits (that all players agree to) built in. Victory conditions something like: The most provinces gained by the time limit etc

A secure save option would be nice.

i would loooooove sooo much to play EU multiplayer, but I only have one friend who likes the game and he doesn't own a copy (he just hogs my computer when I'm not around :) ) and I just can't seem to sell the idea to my other friends. A match-making service like this would be really great to help me find people to play with whenever I feel like it.... even if it isn't that great (lots of impatient people who like to screw things up and don't appreciate the game) it would be better than nothing, at least for me...
