What's the point of holding back information about EU II?

The majority of us are eagerly anticipating the sequel and we like the few screenshots we've seen. Nothing really can be lost by giving us more information.

Firaxis is saturating the web with info about Civ3 and I'm just as ready and impatient to buy it.

Fact is, more information about EU II would make people more apt to anticipate and purchase it sooner rather than later. Once we discover all the new features we'll be just that more excited.

And quite frankly, the trickle of news and tidbits that come out of Paradox generates more frustration than anticipation...

Just a thought.

Info WILL be revealed once the game is nearing its completion... I think it is about preserving their title and the new ideas, saveguarding them from other companies. Also, a NDA makes sure no false info is spread. Not all options that are in a demo get implemented in the end

Actually, even though IP law is relatively primative, there would be a cause of action against one who stole info such as this in such a way. Of course, I'm not sure whose jurisdiction this would fall under...

Other companies do it. Look at my original example, Civ3. Firaxis has been pumping out quite a lot of information concerning what's in the game. Much of it since mid July. So the idea that Paradox is "preserving their title and the new ideas, saveguarding them from other companies" doesn't quite jive with the industry standard.

I'm not looking for rumors here, either. Just solid, basic information. The fact is this is poor PR...

I disagree. Go look at any previews section on your garden variety games website.

Think about it...

Warcraft III has been on the horizon how long now? And we know much about it.

Every game springing from "The Sims" has had heavy PR and we've known everything about it before we even buy it. Much of that is due to Maxis' chat sessions and generous amount of info.

Neverwinter Nights and Pool of Radiance are at best Q4 products and they have their own website and handy preview FAQs.

The list goes on: Shogun's sequel, Doom III, Wolfenstein, From Dusk Till Dawn, Zoo Tycoon, Civ3. All games we know a lot about long before the release. I don't think it's the case that "lots of companies have bad PR...".

Fraxis and other companies use NDA's as well I am sure. The difference is the company may put out info but they don't want the BETA testers to start spreading the word until the parent company gives them the go ahead. I understand your frustration but I think that's probably the real reason for the NDA.

I want my EU II info straight from Paradox's mouth.

I guess it comes down to a question of release date. Is it indeed the eigth of November, as has been seen on various websites... or is it later? If it is a November relese date, and the infor is still this sparse, then it's not such a simple issues as it being incomplete...

Traditionally, to release a game in time to catch the Chirstmas shopping frenzy, means a mid-November release at the latest in the US.

Yeah, but I am pretty sure they meant X-mas, and not for the X-mas season. No way they are releasing it that early.. beta testing is just started...then production, distribution, etc.

Numerous gaming sites have listed the release date as November 8, 2001. If the date isn't listed, or if it still was the general "X-mas" date, these sites would list it as Q4, 2001, neh?

I trust a site such as gamespot, and they have it listed as November 8.

Of course, Paradox could quell this little question that is vexing many of us with a little more information...

Of course, that's sort of my whole point.

And I have seen such releasedates beeing push forward, even years from the stated date ...

And yes, Paradox plans on starting to leak stuff in a controlled fassion when they feel it's apropriate.

Right now, keep looking at those beta screenshots... they contains a LOT of new stuff ... =)

I think it is a matter of taste where the limit for too much information is.
Personally I like a few surprises in a new game.
As for relying on gamespot or others to give the correct release date, just don't.
All companies makes plans for distribution and such before they know the exact release date.

Maybe it's a Swedish thing.

Like Saab - all the dealers and leasing companies know that there's a major upgrade of the Saab 9-5 and can give me detailed specs including CO2 emissions, insurance group, prices etc but Saab haven't released anything and their website still promotes the old version.

No wonder Bjorn Borg didn't make a success of his range of underwear or whatever it was that he wasn't promoting.
