To make a historical naval battle:
Whenever 2 fleets at war occupy the same area, have a chance of them to encounter each other and start a fight - the fight would be like a typical land battle with a modifier based on ship terrain...

The chance of a battle would increase according to the number of ships with troops onboard...

Because PI is filled with igloo dwelling money grubbers who want you to spend money on their other games no matter how much they butcher logic and decrease quality in the game we want perfected? :D

JK PI, but seriously get me my resources, trade routes and nods in CK2...

Having republics without anything to trade with is just pointless.

Too early to tell, indeed. But I do agree that an extra layer of depth is necessary to make trading interesting. Just building posts that give cash is hardly an incentive to make me, as duke of Lombardy, not want to crack Genoa, as usual. On the opposite hand, if republics make lots of monies due to said posts then what will stop THEM from grabbing as much land as they can and blob?

As for naval battles themselves, don´t think it´s really needed for a game of this era.

The historic relevance of naval warfare during medieval times is unquestionable.
Half of the game map is covered by water. In its one-thousand-year history the island of Venice has been conquered only once: by Napoleon. Byzanthium and greek fire. Entire armies lost because of a storm. Piracy and trade: there wasn't much distinction, if at all. The power of Pisa fell after its fleet failed to protect Corsica from Genoa; Florence took notice. And the list goes on and on...
The focus should be on how to implement a funny and micromanagement-free naval power system in the game; whether or not naval warfare was important shouldn't be an issue.

ps. I agree that naval battles wouldn't be that great. Maybe some kind of "naval pressure" with maintenance and everything...

Now that you mentioned it...

Since fleets WERE expensive and the appeal of a Republic is exactly that they trade AND have more monies, then the size of the fleet should give influence and a means to pressure people to join your trade league. It would solve two issues, making navies more interesting and having republics a good mechanic to spend their money, instead of using to finance mercenaries and blob like crazy.

Where I'm from naval warfare was extremely common. The Lords of the Isles on the west of Scotland ruled that area through their naval dominance by the use of Birlinns or War-galleys ( a developement of Viking longboats) However most battles were resolved off coastlines and so I am happy for battles to take place as normal as an abstract.

All of that in a single, major war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_Sicilian_Vespers).

It was relatively rare to find a naval force that was skilled at bringing the enemy to battle. But when there was one, it could be war-deciding. This is why I like the retinue idea for those fleets that can go on the offensive, or link it to a commander trait.

Naval Warfare and dealing with territories that aren't connected by land is a huge pain in the ass in other Paradox games, so I am very happy with the simplified way it works in this game. I'd be even happier if they had kept the CK1 mechanic where boats simply magically appeared when you wanted to sail somewhere and you paid some money.

If they do eventually end up adding naval combat then I hope that they do it in a DLC so that I can disable it/opt out of it.

Naval events could do what you mentioned (I think), and on the topic, how about making ships less speedy?

People who start off an argument with "Seriously" are peons.

seriously...

And seriously , people who post responses that are off topic and non constructive are trolls , seriously

now back on the topic , Would it be fair to implement fleets raiding trade routs in game ? would it be viable ? (or can the engine handle it ?)

and yes ships are way too fast right now in game..........

How about a system where having more than 10 boats in a province with a straight blocked the straight, unless you had equal too or greater amount of ships within that province, and then made unloading require having more ships there then your enemy does by a significant amound? (5 or 10)? I dunno if it's historic, but it'd help Venice survive against any HRE Invasion much more like how it should.

  • Europa Universalis III
It would be really bad in a game where ships are being auto generated in the hundreds. A lot of things would become immediately unbalanced. The Fatimids control a lot of coastline and they typically don't have any trouble getting more ports when they invade places like Anatolia and Greece. This would give them a gigantic war fleet that would essentially make Crusades totally impractical. Then there's the issue of the map and how cramped the seas are in CK2. Essentially every war between distant countries would be totally decided by naval battles, because the water ways are simply too narrow to move troops around without bumping into the enemy who also attempting to squeeze through.

Naval battles are best reserved for other series, honestly.

I would love to pay ~20€ for a dlc that would include naval combat, i think many others would too, more then those who would pay for seafaring americans in the 12th century.
