And is it me, or does the game lag a lot too?

There currently is no way to automate trade.

On that note, sorry to hijack but could we have an option to disable AI troop shuffling on player fronts?

Been playing HOI3 black ice and a bulk of the fun and game play is in commanding and managing the forces.

I'm happy to draw front lines and build up planning bonus but not start the plan thus micro, but the AI keeps moving my troops around.

Really compared to other paradox titles and HOI 1-3, trade is pretty automated already. When nations want to trade with you, it's done automatically. When you lack resources then you get a notice, you can ignore this or simply trade your Civilian factories to get a positive flow again. If its rubber and oil your struggling with, building synthetic factories increases those resources. Seriously it is real easy. If you have questions on it, just ask.

In The 1.4 Oak update, unit shuffling has been addressed. So let's wait til tomorrow when it releases to see if that is true!

Also @atredies in the mean time, you can also remove a division or two from a front by pressing control H, then a red ! should appear in the divisions box in the UI. This can be a quick fix for now. You can also remove a whole army. Not the best solution but it helps. Hopefully as i have stated, they addressed this in 1.4, it is in the changelog. So fingers crossed.....!

Would this take their planning bonus away? Also controlling them without being assigned to an army prevents them from getting a commander?

Building battle plans is pretty much setting the army on AI control, you just dictate the theater and strategy.

As for trade? Simplest thing in the world.

You have civilian factories, you can either use one to help build your buildings faster or you can trade one off for resources until canceled.

You have extra resources(Import focuses force this)? Well that's fully automated, the AI does it for you and you get free extra civilian factories out of it to build stuff faster with.

Trade is basically civilian factories for any resource you want or your exported resources for civilian factories(Again, this half is 100% automated). The only other thing to keep in mind is you need to build/have enough convoy for the trade and all that is nice and obvious at the top where it shows how many convoy you have, just hover over it.

That's it, the whole thing as far as I know. EZPZ.

You do everything you would normally do. Create the army, choose a commander, and draw a front line. Select the divs you want to pull away and hit control H.

This does however remove their planning bonus .........over time. Do it right when your ready to attack and it will slowly decay juat like it would for every div on that battle plan

Just as a note, the AI does a lot better when fronts are shorter. For the German invasion of the USSR, for example, using 10~ armies with "fronts" that are only a few provinces wide can really help.

Would this take their planning bonus away? Also controlling them without being assigned to an army prevents them from getting a commander?

Planning bonus decays over time and does not disappear when your division switches armies, is assigned to other order or is removed from the order. There are 4 things I do to get planning bonus and avoid shuffling.

1. What I do most of the time is delating the whole frontline just before attacking. This way my army, which was preparing on the frontline all that time, is ready to move wherever I tell them to with no shuffling.

2. Sometimes when the front is going to get messy and I'd like AI to follow up with some of my troops I the the frontline and attack order, but remove part of the army from this order and these are the troops I use. Because I do not activate the plan the rest of divisions just follows the frontline shuffling, but also getting some planning bonus when they stand still. This way after some time I add troops that were attacking to the attack order and remove from it those guys who were just walking behind the frontline: they become my attack troops.

3. Use Spearhead Order, which does not allow units assigned to it to shuffle until it is completed.

4. Draw short, one province frontlines and assign troops to them. They will not shuffle because it's one province frontline and they have nowhere to go. However if you expand the width of your front (more provinces bordering the enemy as you progress) situation will get more messy and you'll have to adjust.

The only additional automation I can think of that is want would be trading. If I could set preferred partners and set how much I trade for and at what shortage thresholds etc then that would be dandy. As it is its not really fun to trade and is slightly annoying micro.

It's a change of design philosophy.

The developers explained it in one of the Development Diaries as they wanted to focus on developing features that players want to use, not features that everyone would just automate. I feel it was a good choice considering how much issues people have with the AI as it is already, can you imagine the frustrations if the AI also could screw up your trade and all other things you want to automate?

I think there are some interesting choices to be done in trading in HoI4, although they are not all that obvious at first glance. Let's say for example your playing as Germany and need oil. Do you want to strengthen your future enemies ( trade oil from Soviet and give them factories in return ) OR do you trade from Venezuela which requires convoys and put your trade routes at risk OR do you want to research and build synthetic refineries instead to not have to trade at all.

If trading also had a bigger impact on how friendly nations would become to you this choice could be made even more important and influence diplomacy.
