Seriously, are Ecumenopoli supposed to be this OP?

I am somewhere into the 2600s right now in a game where I had quickly obtained Fen Habbanis early on. The Ecumenopolis is not even half populated yet (still pushing people in from all over my empire) and it is the SOLE source of consumer goods and alloys for the entire empire. My empire is not very large (only about a dozen planets) but still, for a single planet to be able to single handedly supply this empire is bloody amazing. I shudder to think what it would be like if the planet were to actually become fully populated some day. Forget Cybrex as the great quest. First League is where its at now. If you get the First League chain, don't bother picking up the arcology perk. You will spend most of your game just trying to fill this monster up. No need for more. Good lord, this thing is a powerhouse!

Well yeah it's been noticed. Even rushing the perk and creating a small one early is good.

Dont have Megacorps DLC.
What is power level at 2300, 2400, 2500 marks?
2600 seems a bit late, and atthat point all 600 stars are mine, does ecomenopoli helps that?
There is a thing with Megastructers that you may never unlock them in any sane time and Ecomenopoli is just easier to get it.

Ecu are OP for a few reasons.

- They are cheap. Minerals are typically cheaper than alloys.
- They are already populated, and are thus easier to kick into production compared to new worlds or habitats.
- The arcologies circumvent rares maintenance for alloy/consumer goods production. This makes them extraordinarily stable from an economic point of view, which is ironic given the fall of Fen Habbanis.
- They are the most district efficient planet in the game, so they have a minimal impact on your empire sprawl.
- They are available much sooner than Galactic Wonders.

The only real downside of Ecu is that it can be a large time investment converting a world entirely to city districts. Even your homworld will probably need many years of redevelopment before you can even start the conversion process.

Don't forget they have the habitability of a gaia world, making it easy to maintain a happy and productive population without the need for lengthy and expensive terraforming.

Minor quibble. Fen Habbanis fell because it relied on food from the outside, when there was no food to be had from the rest of the empire it fell. Try doing the same to one of your Ecumenopoli and see how stable it is.

Ecumenopolis in one system and a ringworld for farms and energy next door... add a stellar decompressor in a 3rd system and you're a completely self-sustaining tall empire with a huge population. Right?

Ecumenopoli are definitely overtuned right now, but Fen Hab. is on a completely different level of overpoweredness because it's free and you can get it way earlier than even the fastest rush to Arcology project would go.

I think even if you added 1 strategic resource upkeep to the arcology districts they'd still be almost a no brainer considering the max level buildings provide 8 less efficient jobs (more raw minerals needed as input) for 2 strategic resource upkeep, but it'd be a good place to start.

Edit: I'd love to hear the opinions of those disagreeing with me, because from where I'm sitting even a huge nerf like the one I suggested would still have me going for arcology almost every game.

I hate to say it, because I really really like them, but they have to be nerfed. In my last game I had only two types of planets. Mining worlds with commercial zones and ecumenopoli
for consumer goods or alloys with commercial zones. I had no energy districts (or food districts because of live stock slaves) and was generating insane amount of every ressource.

Just use a dyson sphere for energy. Normal planets can more or less handle all your food requirements.

Just a small update to my opening post. Played a few more decades of the game and became completely self sufficient for ALL resources required by my empire. SO much so that most of them were capping out, even after building several huge fleets to go on a sight seeing tour of other empires. Admittedly, this was only on Commodore level so things would have probably been significantly more challenging at Admiral level. All of this however, was a direct result of the incredible power of Fen Habbanis. It completely freed up my other worlds to focus on other required resources and made empire management rediculously easy. When consumer goods and alloys become that plentiful, there isn't much left that you can't achieve. The game was essentially won. Now to try this at a higher level and see how things go. I suspect that if one can survive the first 100-200 years, with an ecumenopolis in hand, it is likely you will eventually win.

Can you really rely on Fen Habanis though? Precursor anomalies seem to occur at a drastically reduced rate. Nevermind that I never seem to roll the right precursors. While you CAN potentially get it super-early, you might as well have won the interstellar lottery. Doesn't help things either if you play with a high number of AI either. They are very expansionist in the early years, and beeline towards your territory if possible.

If you're at the galactic south-south-east, it's pretty reliable. If you aim for it you can easily get Fen Habbanis ~50 years in.

I've read this before, that each precursor can always be found in the same region. This seems strange to me though, because when I find the system it's always somewhere near my space. Is it just the anomalies that are region-locked?

Privately, I wish they were more random, like maybe divide the galaxy into precursor-sections but randomize which one appears where.

Sort of, where you spawn in space will affect which precursor chain you get. When you get to the end of the chain the system will usually spawn in your space or close to it.
It shouldn't be difficult to make it random but so far they haven't.

If you do debugtooltip in the console you can see what stars count for starting which precursor chain from the galaxy map. First League is Precursor_3, if you survey Precursor_3 stars before others you'll get the First League chain.

Theoretically you can get the First League chain from a start anywhere in the galaxy, you just need your science ships to travel to First League space before surveying anything else.

I have several in my current game.

They're nice but matter decompressors are more important, if you don't spawn by a black hole, reload.
