What are the possible spoils of war that you are hoping to win from Russia? I can't help but wonder if better rewards can be won in China rather than in Russia. I'm sure however, that due of the insatiable appetite of the Japanese people for whale blubber, great disdain has been cast at Russia for interfering with whaling operations. The Emperor must not allow for those deeds to go unpaid. Justice must be served! (preferably with a side of whale meat)

I have a question. Suppose you're playing civilised Japan and you want to grab Hawaii before the US does. Which would be the best way? head straight for Hawaii or go through Guam, Wake and Midway first?

Just finished reading up to date on this Rensslaer and I've quite enjoyed it, the screenshots are as little messy, but I enjoy your writing style.
(I did make a fair bit of headway into Imperio Novo a while ago before my interest waned in HOI. I think what I've read and played of V2 so far it has what it takes to start consuming too much of my time again like HOI :))

Beyond revenge though, what do you hope to achieve out of this war with Russia?
I assume like HOI3 there is not a whole lot of value (economically speaking) in the Russian Far East for Japan?

Wow! It’s only been a couple of days, but I realize I’m in serious need of feedback, from even before the latest update. So… (you might have two sets of feedback here, so watch for it!)

Nice operation here ... but you'll need more than 6 regiments together to push Russia to cede Sakhalin.

Thanks! I agree about more than 6 regiments at a time. Somewhere I need to make a compromise between attrition and combat effectiveness, because they’re typically on their home territory, and my own tech levels limit how much the supply limit is for me even in friendly territory, so…

It's always interesting when two powers meet for the first time on the battlefield and compare military prowess. Results can be... disconcerting, to say the least. I like the way you handled Japan's reaction to Spanish resistance and capabilities, then adjusted your strategy to overcome them. It also didn't hurt that your supply lines were a hell of a lot closer... ;)

I quite agree! It’s fun finding out yay/nay whether you can hold your own, especially when you start at such a disadvantage and try to catch up. Thanks about my adjustments to strategy – it’s the name of the game! :)

you can try to fabricate a claim of some kind in AHD and HOD, but if you're detected, you get instant infamy without even doing anything with it. So it is something best used sparingly.

I just loaded AHD onto my system. I’m going to try it out over the next couple of days. Seems like it might take some getting used to! All the other CB processes are the same?

I decided to take a look at my back up copy of Victoria 2 vanilla and I found you were almost right to begin with (and I was only partly right). You can demand a concession, a state from a uncivilized, for 4 infamy, but if the country is an one state country you have to establish a protectionive for 8 infamy. So you can probably demand a concession for all but the capital state and then establish a protectionive. Korea turned out to be a 4 state country so it is (3*4)+8=20. You get 20 infamy for annexing Korea.

Yeah, it was stiff! :D That’s what I remember – 20 Infamy. So I let that go away for a while. I intentionally didn’t want to take more than one non-core state from Russia in that second war because I knew I wanted Korea afterward. I figured it was best to take all in one swoop, rather than over a period of years.

Bleh, the Dutch ugliness strikes again.

They’re certainly here and there around my region. But I’ll take care of them one day, if they get too close! ;)

Gogogo!!! To the west!

Indeed – just watch! This becomes a pretty serious war. VERY interesting! ;)

You can do this! Hopefully, as long as you yourself keep siazble armies in the East, you can probably cause a lot of war exhaustion like I did, with the more numerous Qing. Though I am not a strategist, I know you can do well.

Thanks! I’m really looking forward to this war. My first real solid go at them, after having learned their capabilities in the first 2 wars (of course I know their capabilities in truth, but I was role-playing, so I didn’t “let myself know” how bad it could get. ;)

No rest for the wicked, it seems. Onwards, to victory!

Always another war. Reminds me of Sforza!!! :D

Maybe if victory is achieved, Japan can soon become a great power and no longer be suspectible to being sphere'rd.

Yaay! I’m hoping for this, but it’ll come soon enough, one way or another. Japan is growing too fast to not become GP eventually, war or not.

Truth be told, there’s not a lot that Japan might want out of Russia. On the other hand, Russia holds 2 core states, and Japan categorically cannot allow that to continue. It’s a matter of pride, or “face”. There is also the industry in Okhotsk that Japan has striven for, but now that Japan is more industrialized, that isn’t such a morsel to be envied any more. Because of the role-playing, I’m intentionally not following the obvious path according to game rules. China’s population is much more valuable, but not to Japan’s current rulers – they don’t see it. Not yet. I’m sure they will if they take more territory.

Gotta love the Dutch giving it to Spain. Payback's a bitch. Good luck with the Bear.

Yeah! Lol Pretty funny. Thanks!

I have a question. Suppose you're playing civilised Japan and you want to grab Hawaii before the US does. Which would be the best way? head straight for Hawaii or go through Guam, Wake and Midway first?

If I recall correctly, you cannot colonize until you’re civilized. And by the time I was civilized, the US already had Hawaii. And then the less hospitable islands across the Pacific were all colonized before I either 1) had the tech to colonize them, or 2) had the colonial range to colonize them. This is going to occur to Japanese leadership at some point, and they’re going to be very upset. ;) :D

Hawaii existing at game start , i think you'd go straight for them ...

another round with Russia , we'll see how it turns this time!

Like I said to Misterbean just above this, I didn’t have the capability, or I definitely would have.

Welcome, RogueLeprechaun! Glad you enjoyed Imperio Novo (which is completing this week, most likely), and glad to be drawing you into V2! :) Sorry the screenshots are sloppy -- I'm trying to fit alot into each one, from time to time, and I'm in a hurry. But glad you enjoy the rest. I explained a little bit to JagdPanzer about Russia, but mainly I want my cores, and I want power, and since I'm role-playing, the Emperor and his court seem to think beating Russia and taking those things that make her great is power -- they will see, eventually, that Japan can make its own power without taking Siberia, which isn't much of a prize. ;)

I’m going to be out of town the next few days, in Baltimore/DC area. Visiting lots of historical stuff out that way – Gettysburg, Ft. McHenry, Annapolis, etc. But I should also have time to work on this AAR some, and also start playing in anticipation of my next AAR.

Thanks for your comments! I always encourage new posters, but I definitely want to encourage my regular posters too – I look forward to your comments, and really appreciate your time in commenting!

Another update tomorrow, should be, providing I can get settled in to the hotel.

about the cb thing: TBH, I have no idea since I only started playing V2 with AHD.
one diff I noticed in HOD though: right after installing the expansion, I fired up Prussia just for a quick look-see. Turned out I couldn't DoW Austria! No "Assert hegemony" CB. I haven't played beyond that, though. Too busy in HPP trying to get the US' RL OOB complete. Getting closer too. In 1941 I'm only short about 6 months and 175 IC.

So, the dice against Russia are cast again ... let's see if you can break their will before their central Asia stacks get around and put you in a complicated lose-lose situation of not being able to muster equal forces due to attrition ( that area is not exactly of ample supply ... ). Well, I can only wish good luck ;)

That Russian bit of Arabia is ... well, ahistorical to say the least :D Given that the 2 major constants of the European politics in the OTL XIX century were to avoid a resurgence of France and to prevent at all costs that Russia could get a major all-year ice-free harbour, I can't even imagine what kind of twisted timeline you have where GB not only has no qualms of having a direct Russian border in India and allows the Russians to control the Hormuz strait ... without counting with the rampage France and the Dutch have been doing in the far east :D

That was a good war with Spain. Now perhaps you can start the rinse, repeat cycle and get the rest of their colonies. :)

Good luck with Russia. I can certainly understand your desire to own Sakhalin Island but the rest of Siberia... good only for keeping the Russians out of China, I think.

I envy you that trip - I did the same swing a few years ago. Gettysburg is amazing; Antietam and Manassas aren't far away. DC of course is chock-ful of things to see and do. I haven't toured Annapolis, but the Washington Navy Yard has a nice museum and Baltimore has the B&O Railroad museum which you absolutely should not miss. Anyway - enjoy!

Later this summer I'm looking to move to southern Pennsylvania. I dread the winters, but I'll be close to New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington - and an hour or so from Gettysburg.

:D Oh, I understand it all right, but you're right -- I don't agree with how either party has led in the last dozen years or so.

Oh, I understand it all right
"understand" was a poor word choice there. I'm sure you do understand it, just as I do. In order to catch a thief, one must think like a thief. In the case of our government, I'll let you use your own adjectives  Lets hope the Emperor never allows this type of misconduct, corruption, widespread incompetence to germinate in his government. Hopefully he will heed to the voices of the libertarians in his country, and allow each man the right to succeed beyond their wildest dreams, or fall flat on his face, only to get up, dust himself off and try harder and smarter the next time.

If I was playing as China, this would indeed be an ideal opportunity to strike at Japan and avenge earlier losses! Good to see the first part of Korea granted statehood, newly acquired resources in China and a greater potential industrial base will soon see the Japanese economy compete with the Great Powers.

The war against Russia has started well, but it will be interesting to see just how many Russian's travel west. Good luck, I hope you can grab some defensible terrain.

Good luck with Russia!

Thanks!

about the cb thing: TBH, I have no idea since I only started playing V2 with AHD.
one diff I noticed in HOD though: right after installing the expansion, I fired up Prussia just for a quick look-see. Turned out I couldn't DoW Austria! No "Assert hegemony" CB. I haven't played beyond that, though. Too busy in HPP trying to get the US' RL OOB complete. Getting closer too. In 1941 I'm only short about 6 months and 175 IC.

Interesting about the Assert Hegemony. So.... You're going to be doing a US tutorial??? :) I'll look forward to it, if I'm anticipating correctly!

More is yet to come.

I tried my hand at haiku, trying to encourage FJ44 in his V1 Japan AAR, but I wasn't any good at it. ;) You, though, are a tremendous writer, no matter the format.

Gettysburg is fantastic, and you're going during the right time of year -- should be pleasant weather, and the crowds reasonable. Very envious of you. :)

Keep up the great work!

I had a blast! Should commit another day, but much of my time is already booked. But I had a great time exploring the battlefield by car, and walking around a fair amount. Thanks!

Well, the geopolitics AI might could do with some improvement. But that's more like looking 3-4 moves ahead in chess. Hard to manage. Maybe a modder could (has?) insert a trigger to CB Britain against Russia in such a case.

I've been to Antietam before, and it wasn't nearly as interesting. I'm going to be well booked, but I did look at that RR museum as a possibility. I'm definitely going to the Maritime Museum, which is maybe the one you refer to. Hope your move goes well -- I enjoy moves, into interesting places. Not that I've moved alot.

Here's to the American Dream, which is inextricably linked to a free market of goods and ideas! ;)

Ahh, yes... ;) I waited long enough that I was hopeful that China wasn't intending to intervene. Course, that doesn't preclude them from doing so later. Thanks!

Quirinus! Welcome, dear friend! Good to hear/see you again! Are you just reading, or contemplating a game or even an AAR? :)

Thanks for your comments, everybody! I was hoping to have time to complete an update today, but it will have to be tomorrow. I don't, apparently, get Wi-Fi in the room, only in the lobby, unless I pay for it, which I'm loathe to do... :D
