I am thinking the sensor range is either too big or shows too much information (such as mechs' tonnage) - it removes the element of surprise, because you know, more or less, what you're facing, even if you don't see it.
Given I've seen shots come from outside sensor range, I don't agree. I actually think the sensor contact part is one of the more interesting periods of an engagement.

Its time to start taking advantage of terrain and maneuver and decide if and how you want to engage. Fall back to allow slower mechs to move up into a firing line, or form a pincer move to cut them off and isolate the enemies out of range of static positions.

One thing that would help the element of surprise is the objectives not telling you when there are reinforcements and how many enemies you need to kill (either directly or by percentage)

So what is it exactly that you're trying to say? I think it's great there's a step between knowing the class and knowing the model, as it can provide valuable tactical information the class designation alone can't. Are actually trying to dispute that?

Besides, there are other sources of information besides the sensors, and you can combine that with tonnage. Perhaps you've observed the mech's movement or it has fired at you from beyond LOS - or maybe you just know your friend likes to use Awesomes and Atlases before any other assault mechs and you'd like to be able to tell the difference.
I just chuckled bc 55t is where the massive variety of range/weapon profiles occur. All those mechs will appear the same fo all intents and purposes since they weigh the same and have the same speed. I do agree knowing movement of the blip combined with weight can quickly narrow down most of the lighter weight mechs. 55t its basically impossible, and beyond 55t it can be hard since most have the same speed as others in their tonnage with a few notable exceptions.
