Patres Conscriptii,

This tribune agrees with the plans proposed by Consul Gaius Draconius.
If I may add a suggestion, we should detach a legion from the army in Narbonensis to deal with the slave uprising in Lugdunensis.
The legions in Latium and Campania are too far away, I fear. Furthermore, detaching a legion from the army in Armorica seems less than wise. We outnumber the Gauls two to one in Armorica right now. Sending legions away may make Vercingetorix think he still has a chance.

Speaking of Vercingetorix, now is the time to send an envoy to the Gauls, demanding their complete surrender and the annexation of their lands.
We have their armies pinned down with nowhere to go. All their cities are besieged. They do not have the strength left to resist us. All they will achieve with further resistance is prolonging the inevitable.

Actually, we can send a legion from Campania to Lugdinensis thanks to the Roman roads. I have decided to send a legion with full strength from Campania to Lugdinensis. My guess is that Vercingetorix will our emissary if we demand an unconditional surrender. He expects no mercy and he has nothing to lose.

We need Vercingetorix to think he still has a chance.
He needs to come out of hiding so we can destroy him.
As long as he is around even with a small band of warriors the garrisons unders siege still have hope.

All Tribunes should assault if possible. Amorica is maybe to strong but all the others should be weak enough to win by brute force.

We have one full strength legion at Belgica and two depleted legions at Germania Superior. We will not launch assaults because it may be costly for us in terms of manpower. We have already lost too many legions. We will win this war unless some kind of Gods intervention saves the Gauls. There is no need to let any Romans die when we can starve out our enemies. Vercingetorix is not a fool. He knows that he will not attack against the Roman army. He will lead the defense at Armorica and hope for Gods assistance.

I do have internet connection for the entire period of Xmas and the New Year. Did we just lost two legions? I think we should have 13 legions and we have 11 legions?

Correct. The losses of a battle are randomly (that means: via dice roll) allocated to the Legions. Thus it may happen, that Legions are destroyed. Especially when their initial CV-value was less than 3.

This is why we need atleast 6 provinces with tempels.
In future wars with big players (Carthage :))
We will need to be able to raise new legions fast and without to much troubles on the homefront.

Well atleast Narbonensis then. Every turn the siege last these provinces don't generate income and thats worth soldiers.
Its even economical better. You loose soldiers, so less upkeep and you have an extra province so more income.

This is a player point of vieuw not a senators ofcourse :)

Tragedy

In Armorica, Vercingetorix realizes, that his situation is almost hopeless, unless he manages to break the siege around Condate. Thus he gathers his remaining force in order to make a sortie.

On the other side, Tribune Gnaeus Scipio Lentulus has made preparations. On a weak spot, that would benefit a Gaul assault due to the terrain, he deceives Vercingetorix by leaving only few troops there in the frontline. Meanwhile, a second and stronger line fence is build further behind, that can`t be seen from the city.

As expected, Vercingetorix assaults this spot. After having overcome the first roman fence, he suddenly faces the second. In this moment, Tribune Lentulus personally leads a large force to the Gaul`s flank. In the following battle, more than half of the Gauls are killed, while the Romans suffer almost no casualties.

Unfortunately, Tribune Lentulus fought in the first line and receives a deadly blow. The message about his death during a brilliantly fought battle, spreads throughout the Republic. In all minor and major cities memorial ceremonies are being held. The Prestige of the family of the beloved Tribune increases significantly due to his display of roman virtues.

(Effects: Gnaeus Scipio Lentulus dies. Prestige increases by 25. New character has to be chosen, that inherits most of the Clients and Prestige, depending on his Char-Skill. Lentulus` wealth cannot be inherited.)

Late 251 B.C.

Senate report:
The Senate reminds all Senators of the upcoming elections of Officials for the years 250/249.

Consul report:
Gaius Draconius and Lucius Aquila inform the Senate, that an envoy has been sent to Massilia, but couldn`t achieve anything. Another envoy was sent to Egypt in order to improve relations, but fails too.

Pontifex report:
Quintus Livius Varro starts a rather unsuccessful voyage through the Republic, since only the happiness of the population in Aquitania improves by 5.

Due to the Gaul War, the Happiness in all Provinces is reduced by 1.

Provinces with below-average happiness are Bruttium, Liguria, Venetia (46 each), Umbria (44), Apulia (41), Campania (35), Aquitania (32), Central Gaul, Latium (27 each) and Narbonensis (30).

Aedile report:
Tiberius Belisarius reports about several constructions being finished. The fortifications in Central Gaul and a Temple in Umbria have been build without any nameable events. But due to his successful negotiations with suppliers of construction material, the cost of the Temple in Etruria is reduced to 200 Denarii.

Quaestor report:
The management of the tax collection has been managed in an outstanding way by Sextus Atilius Aelianus, thus the tax revenues of the last six months are higher than expected and sum up to 1.331 Denarii. The Treasury holds 4.188 Denarii.

[= 3.977 (last turn`s Treasury) - 50 (Envoys) - 300 (Happiness) - 200 (Fortifications) - 450 (Temples) - 120 (Reinforcements) + 1.331 (Taxes)]

Censor report:
Popularity improves for Tiberius Belisarius to +3 and for Sextus Atilius Aelianus to +1. The Popularity remains the same for Quintus Livius Varro (+2), Lucius Aquila (+1) and Aulus Manlius Merula (+1).

Tribune report:
4 Legions receive reinforcements.

Tribune Decimus Curiatius moves to Lugdinensis with one Legion in order to crush the slave uprising. In a short onslaught with no own casualties, the slave army is defeated and the survivors crucified in the aftermath.

Tribune Decimus Cominius orders a final assault on Narbo Martius. The Garrison, weakened from hunger, can`t defend itself properly anymore and is quickly defeated. Thus the Province of Narbonensis is once more under roman control.

Tribune Gaius Geminius continues to siege Belgica. Both sides suffers small casualties due to the cold weather.

Tribune Aulus Manlius Merula tries to capture the city by storm, but his forces are repelled by the Garrison. Both sides suffer small casualties.

In a desperate attempt to break the siege, Vercingetorix makes a sortie. Tribune Gnaeus Scipio Lentulus, having foreseen this, easily pushes the Gauls back after having suffered heavy casualties. Unfortunately, Lentulus has lead his men in the first battle line and is among the few roman dead.

Spy report:
none

Foreign affairs:
- The Numidian War:
Numidia starts an attack on the Carthaginian forces in Gaetulia, but suffers a severe defeat and retreats immediately. The superior forces continue to siege Gaetulia and Mauretania. Having lost hope to be relieved the cities of Tingi and Dimmidi finally surrender. Having lost most of its income and unable to pay his troops, the King of Numidia has can rely on the Garrison in Nepte only. Warscore: 18 (Carthage)

(Since the Censor is now a Client of Belisarius, Morrell has to fill the Office and propose things, if he feels like doing so.

Deadline is Monday, 4 PM GMT. Merry Christmas to all of you.)

This is the current situation:

Gaul Tribes (United)
Armorica (50, 2, N, N) - Besieged by Rome (Garrison: 2 CV)
Belgica (50, 2, N, N) - Besieged by Rome (Garrison: 1 CV)
Germania Superior (25, 2, N, N) - Besieged by Rome (Garrison: 1 CV)

We have enough troops at Armorica to storm that city. The new Lentulus should command in there. We should send one full strength legion from Narbonensis to Germania Superior and one full strength legion from Lugdinensis to Belgica. It would mean that the odds in every province would be at least 1 to 5 to our favor. I think we can storm all of those cities with those odds. At the same time, we should send reinforcements to Armorica, Germania Superior, Belgica and Narbonensis.

We should give Pontifex enough cash to increase happiness in every province. Let´s build a port at Narbonensis.

The Republic should also remember the sacrifice of Tribune Gnaeus Scipio Lentulus. Men like him made this Republic great. It is a great pity that he died but he didn´t die for nothing. He was surely one of the great Roman generals and he died like a true Roman.

I suggest that Rome will grant citizenship to Liguria, Venetia and Gaul Cisalpina. We should build temples in those provinces to respect the Roman Gods and the spirit of General Lentulus.

Consul Gaius Draconius

Narbonensis is over.

So if we send the legion in Lundenensis to Germanis Superior.
And the 2 legions in Narbonensis to Belgica will have:

Belgica: 9 cv
Armorica: 11 cv
Germania superior: 7 cv

That should do it to get this war over with.

Fellow Senators!

I am here to state that I am running for the office of Quaestor. My administrative skill is needed to fund the war with Gaul and further Construction. I would like to applaud my predecessor's tax collecting abilities, I hope that I can continue this trend. I am going to hold Games in Rome to honour the dead Tribune Gnaeus Scipio Lentulus, his son Marcus can hopefully be a special guest as we remember the brave Tribune. I am also going to suggest to my friend Censor Lucius Tuccius that Gnaeus Scpio Lentulus receives at posthumous triumph for his duty to Rome.

Patres Conscriptii,

It is with sadness that I introduce myself to the Senate.

I am Marcus, Gnaeus Scipio's oldest son. Now that my father has fallen in battle - may Hades carry his soul with honour - it has befallen upon me to bear the mantle of leadership as head of the Lentulus patricia.

As newly appointed Senator I will not presume to impinge on the dignity and Imperium of our venerable magistrates. I offer my service to the Republic in any way that I can. My father saw fit to educate me in the long military traditions of our family, and I have accompanied him on some of his travels as Pontifex. It will please me to serve as Tribune of the armies my father led in armorica, but at the same time I announce my intention to run for the office of Pontifex. It is with some pride that I say that I should be able to do well in either post, if the Senate or the Consul were to accede with these ambitions.

On the matter of granting my father a posthumous Triumph - It would be a great honour for our family. My father was a great man, held in the highest esteem by his family, loved by his soldiers, and respected by the Senate. He led from the front, unafraid to show his soldiers that he was willing to take the same risks that they did. Few commanders in the field could say the same.
It would be fitting.

-- Senator Marcus Gnaeus Lentulus

OOC: Personal orders - Run for the office of Pontifex.
(Of course if there are better candidates I will change this - it depends a bit on how we end up stats wise .. from a stats perspective Consul may be a better choice but from an IC perspective that would be .. well, insane? :p )
