Thanks, but I'm still a little put off by the suggestion that retailers modify the files. Could you provide where you saw that recommendation?

I think King meant that online retailers might modify SF slightly. E.g. Steam will change it so that it installs into the steamapps folder and can be launched through steam and might get confused if you try to install SF over a non-steam HoI3 (although some people have reported it working anyway).

I don't know what to make of that. I bought my copy of HOI3 at best buy. If I called them to ask about this, the likelihood of getting a representative on the phone that could answer a question like that is nil.

No, the one to ask is the online retailer where you plan to get the expansion. Only they will know whether their version works with box versions or not.

No online retailer modfies the core game files. What they do is add things to the installer to get it to work with their software. This can cause compatability issues.
