Cabinet Formed

President Sergei will hold the Ministry of Trade and International Affairs.
Per Bob Austri will be vice-president and will hold the Ministry of Defence, Intelligence and Security.
Per Loic De Fourgeres will hold the Ministry of Infrastructure and Domestic Affairs.
Per Alexi Gonzov will hold the Ministry of Economy, Resources and Labour.
Per Alexi Keller will hold the Ministry of Environment and Social Affairs.

*As stated by the president himself, with minor alterations in the wording and omiting opinions about them.

The Cabinet was formed on a fairly swift basis. Not a lot of time passed between the announcement and the victory, especialy as rumours had been flying for while about who would take what role. There are no big surprises here, the as the members choosen were from the ESA and the P4P, which was the expected search grounds. With the GA balance as it is however, the speaker will likely fall to either the UMP or CUE, as well as deputy. Not a whole lot of work has been done.

With the balances falling how they did, perhaps its time a veto worked its way to the presidents powers.

Holiday Season brings slow times

With a lot of vacations and many people spending time with the familes, the government is taking a breather and not working intensivly on any particular bill or issue. The government has formed a budget committee and has invited the entire cabinet as well as one representative from the CUE and UMP each.

American Relations

Once again the US is taking the easy road and simply avoiding changing the current cold relations around. They have put forth little real effort and use any excuse they can to avoid fixing relations. How it benefits the US to cut off a friendly power from basic spare parts and military assistance no one knows. Despite efforts from the government little has been done by the US recently to bring relations back to friendly levels.

There had been a report going to be discussed with a friendly and positive briefing about our country but due to the election of Josephus, they changed their minds awefully fast. Despite the weaker showing of the left in the assembly they quickly used the new president as an excuse to keep the embargo in place and further weaken the military. We believe that even had the election gone differently there would have been an excuse found and some reason to keep the embargo in place created.

Senate progress

The Eutopian Alternative Government Location and Continuity System Act was recently pased in a 5-4 vote. The Eutopian State Secrets Act also passed 8-1 with the Revised Eutopian Guaranteed Government Constitutional Amendment blocked with a 3-6 vote not finding enough support.

New Assembly votes underway!

The "Interprovincial Freeway Acquisition Act" or IFAA, has not seen much support for it. The bill is a fairly simple one, the government takes control of the Interprovincial Freeway System and has 400million ducats allocated to make the purchase. The Eutopian Pension Plan Reform Act or EPPRA is also up for vote and seems fairly likely to pass currently.

The Eutopian Presidential Powers Amendment or EPPA, lost with 4 votes against and non for. Rather low total but possibly assembly members just didnt feel the need to keep kicking a dead horse by voting no. The time given to vote on it was 4 days.

Meet the new boss same as the old boss?

Has the ESRP reached the point similar to the UP last term where little progress is being made and there isnt enough to fire them to action in what seems to be an ever entrenching position? Has the right weakened so far as to allow the currently left controlled executive branch sit out the last bit of the term so as to seize the assembly in a fairly one sided election?

The right still has a few "heros" holding out in the assembly. There is again some discussion about a value added tax and veto. The important veto ability seems to be stuck in the mud a little bit and although the right seems a bit weakened, a Value Added Tax might have difficulty passing the assembly still. It is important to note that new business and grass-roots political movements seem to be favoring the left side of politics.

We also would like to call attention the end of Topafest, which saw many interesting sites and interesting people.

Surprise move by the president!

The president has made a move that came as a little bit of a shock to us. _______________________________________________

EUTOPIA CITY, EUTOPIA ------The president of the United Provinces of Eutopia, Josephus Locke Sergei, today announces that effective immediately Vice President Bob Austri is transferred over to the Cabinet Positiion of MTIA. The president will take over the Cabinet Position of MDIS. Per Austri will retain his title as V-P.

Also, until otherwise announced, the Intelligence Services of Eutopia will temporarily be under the jurisdiction of FLEA and MIDA. This is also effective immediately.

President and MDIS Sergei announces that the Air Force of Eutopia will no longer exist as a separate entity. Instead the Air Force Services will be merged with the Armed Forces of Eutopia, headed by the Chief of The Armed Forces Gen. Levarge.

Capt. Tulp is now named as Chief of the Services of the Navy of Eutopia.

The president also advises the media that a full press conference will be delivered within the next week. More details to follow.
____________________________________

This move is a bold and yet very dangerous one. Not only should the president NOT be doing this acts, there is little to no evidence that they are legal. This is very dangerous and all the shuffling is not only timed bad and potentialy illegal, it also would be a good cover and potentialy opening move in a consolidation of power. We urge all citizens to contact the office of the president and demand these "changes" be rethought and the public be brought into debate of tinkering with the consititution instead of altering and messing with it how the president sees fit.

If the president wants to appoint a new chief of the navy thats his business, if he wants to move cabinet members thats his business, if he wants to fold the airforce into the army and mess around with the powers and responsibilities of the cabinet positions, thats NOT his business. Its the peoples business as well as the NA and courts. We urge those able to, to go and tell in person the office of the presidency that you are NOT happy with these iron-fisted changes. March to the office and show your views that the constitution should NOT be spit upon!

This whole exercise and the past few days are giving a very ominous vibe to us here in the office and we hope everyone takes care of their affairs....just in case something big is up that none of us knows about.

More government laxitive needed.

It seems that despite their best efforts otherwise, the people have managed to elect another lazy and misguided government. The president found time to tinker with the constitution and play with the military but was unable to fulfil his promise of a press conferance that could adequately explain his recent decisions. One would hope he could get one of our hidden National Assembly members to explain the wisdom behind his recent changes, moves and decisions but apperently they are too busy serving the sand on the beaches they now represent.

The latest polls show that the president, at 39% holds a lead over the assembly, at 36% approval ratings. Both are weak numbers but the presidents us still close enough to the halfway point that a good break in his favor could see another good run for the office but possibly a slight lose this time, possibly even a near tie, if events unfold favorably for the president. However any badly-timed, controversial plans or bills could unravel the ESA's chance at another positive election.

The Eutopian Congress of labor has also announced that it can best serve our nations people by being concerned about the welfare of other countries, although sharing the same general landmass, we here at the New Republican would hope that at least a small bit of extra care would be given to our nations workers over other places but such is the policy of the ECL. They also decided to take on the World Bank.

In brighter news, the military seems to have been able to dodge any disastrous break-down of equipment so far with the latest military exercise.

ESA backs radical economic change!

By making use of their paper and now left-wing propaganda by the ECL, the ESA is backing a change to a 4-hour work day. Such a radical change is not only daffy and wildly dangerous, it is being done solely to punish employeers. There is no real support from the people to back such a plan and little real evidence that such a sudden change wouldnt completely uproot the economy and cause wide-spread damage. Now that some other parties are showing a bit of weakness and the ESA has seen its roll-calls relativly unharmed, they are showing their true colors. All faith bestowed on Josephus has apperently been a complete waste.

The ECL is also spreading posters in an attempt to generate some kind of support for this off-the-wall and foolish plan. The posters promise that people will get to work 4 hours for 8 hours of pay. There is no way on this planet that such an obviously corrupt plan could succeed. Either everyone would need to have their pay raised per hour to cover the fewer hours worked or else barring massive deflation everyone would need to work multiple jobs thus killing a 4-hour workday.

Questions a plenty!

Analysis of these 2 series of questions at different press conferences will come in a follow up issue shortly as for now, enjoy the show.

The first is with the president. Italics is our question, bold is the answer.

yes, a question from the New Republican, the only reason for annexing the airforce to the army is because the airforce is so small and weak?

Wouldnt it be best if most of the revenue from the VAT early on went to fixing repairing and modernizing the military rather then military expansion and social services? Not to sound cold hearted but if a person dies from lack of medical care, they and their family suffer but if a plane, vehicle or ship is lost due to old and poorly cared for equipment, not only does the familes of those lost suffer but the nation as a whole suffers and more money is lost in replacing that equipment instead of a fraction to properly maintain it.

Good question.

Your suggestion is one of many. It's not one that I chose. First of all it's not military expansion. It's upgrading. But I've made it clear that military spending will not be done at the expense of health services.

Josephus

But with a new source of revenue, it wouldnt be given at the expense of domestic programs. Wouldnt it not be better to spend the early extra income on better training for the armed forces and those maintining their equipment as well as going to replacing and repairing that equipment so that future costs of accidents can be cut down on, as well as future lives not lost in otherwise avoidable accidents?

No doubt. But that would go against my campaign promise. I am not a militarist. As I said in my speech, all I am looking to do is slowly upgrade the military. The military doesn't need 15 billion a year. I understand fully what you are saying, don't get me wrong. But asking the citizens and workers to pay taxes and diverting all that tax towards the miltiary would make me a fool and a liar. My 39 per cent will surely plummet even more.

Josephus

___________________________________

The next is with General Levarge

Yes um, without knowing full details, what if anything is going to be and can be done for the relatives of the lost pilot? And is there any chance that lack of proper training or maintance may be at fualt rather then a flook acident?

"First, we're grounding the air portion of this exercise, and going to a table-top exercise only. As for the cause of the crash, I don't know. I did not say it was a fluke accident, although that can't be ruled out. Neither can maintenance or pilot error. The aircraft was forty years old. That in and of itself speaks volumes.

"The pilot's family will receive the usual death benefits due the family of a fallen warrior . . . I mean a fallen servicemember."

But would you agree that any newly found sources of revenue should go to getting training times increased and equipment in a more managable start and new purchases made for those too old to properly use?

When I wear this uniform I do not comment on political issues. Next question.

Do you have any estimate of when further information will be available and who we should contact for it when it comes, or if further press conferences will take place with any such information?

The name of the pilot will be released after the family has been informed. The cause of the accident will be released when the final report of the AIC is ready. Further news conferences will be held as events warrant.

Any other questions?

Is it possible that better training and highly quality maintance work, as well as newer equipment, could have prevented this terrible tragedy?

"It's possible, of course, that better training, maintenance, and equipment might have prevented this loss. Of course, she may have taken a duck in the face at 800 knots. So killing all the ducks might have prevented it as well. Don't confuse possibility for causation." Levarge was looking annoyed now.

Final question. Would you say this exercise has gone better and more successful then expected, or have you encountered more problems then had been possible to prepared for?

The exercise has gone acceptably. Training is definitely a factor and needs to be paced up. Maintenance has been lax by necessity. The main exercise, however, begins today. We'll know more about where we really are in a few days.

President Josephus a boat man?

That’s the only reason we can think of as to why the ESA would support such an absurdly high level, of 100,000 for a boat, for the equally obscene 25% VAT to apply to. The ESA also thinks a 40,000 automobile is a luxury vehicle. So on 1 hand they intend to way overly tax the middle class, on the other they think 90,000 boats are a commonplace item.

While the high 25% tax is crazy enough, they also consider all jewelry, including a young couples wedding ring, luxury items. As are ANY animal-fur clothing, an obvious gift to eco-nuts since many people other then daddy-war bucks buy animal fur clothing. Oh and for those of you who enjoy hunting or sport shooting or just defending yourself, that’s a luxury too. Apparently the right to defend yourself should now be a luxury granted by the ESA.

Educational products are also not covered, so since supplies for artists also are used in the education system, the arts and crafts are now a daily necessity, no matter peoples opinions. Maybe we should all take up painting since it is deemed a matter of life and death to the ESA, why else have a 0% tax? Medicine is also included, all medicines. So if now illegal drugs ever get legalized, those count as everyday items too! So now we can all get stoned and spend our days painting like the ESA thinks we should!

Ironically the ESA thinks Infant products should not be taxed by a large van to move that big family around should be. Another treat to eco-nuts? Force us all to walk is that their secret long term plan? The plan isn’t all bad, Other medical services other then elective plastic surgery wont get taxed so at least one part of the plan has some common sense.

With such a crazy bill one can only wonder what sort of leadership would endorse this insanity. When you find yourself making a choice of who to vote for come senate elections, make the sane choice and keep people from the party that supports this abomination of a bill out of office.

Oh by the way, 500,000 homes are also considered non-luxury items by the ESA. So next time you see that neighbor pulling into his/her 3 car garage and walking into his/her 6 bedroom home, remind yourself the ESA considers that an average house. Out of touch with reality? Maybe just a tad.

Ten Years Gone
The Strange Case of Whitney von Vaam

by Ted Rapp
for the New Republican Sunday Supplement

It was August, ten years ago. A humid evening, heat lightning playing through the clouds. She had just stormed out of a party, and into Eutopian folklore.

Her name was Whitney von Vaam. An heiress to a South African diamond fortune, a beautiful young woman with, one might think, her whole life ahead.

Her last known action was to spill cocktail weenies on Charles Morgan. And then she vanished.

It was a strange time on the island. Organs and blood disappeared from hijacked ambulances. Burly armed Russians were appearing in Eutopia City. Hurteau fever cut a swath across the land, visions of camel spiders danced about, all the refuse of mad times. And the hurricanes were on the horizon.

Her car was found, a few days later, lying forlornly in the woods near Morgan's estate, though the police think she wasn't in it when it crashed. And the rest is silence. Ten years of silence.

Even her family has all but given up hope. Her mother, contacted by this reporter, was quiet for a long time. "I guess she's dead, after all these years," she finally said in a small voice, "I just wish we had some proof." She started to cry. "I wish someone cared." The von Vaam family continues to offers a three million rand reward for discovery of their daughter's whereabout - whether she is alive or dead.

Whatever happened to Whitney von Vaam? Is she dead, her skeleton awaiting discovery in some shallow grave? Is she alive, ten years older and happy to have escaped her old life? These questions can't be answered by this reporter.

Hawkton Tilly, the Minister for Immigration and Law Enforcement at the time of von Vaam's vanishing act, thinks "damn hobos" were involved. He claims the case went cold years ago and, in equally cold comfort to the von Vaams, says that "law enforcement can't often afford to go back to cold trails." Of course, in Tilly's opinion, "all evidence points to her being dead, but I think she's still alive out there . . . somewhere." Perhaps the trail is not so cold as some think.

And the other actors in this mystery play, ten years on? Charles Morgan is dead. Hawkton Tilly searched for her a time, and then moved on to better things - like cancer, and a failed Presidential bid - leaving the mystery behind. "Lucky" Malloy, a two-bit hood and three-time loser, tried to pawn the famous ruby that von Vaam was wearing when she vanished, and now he's dead, ripped from stem to stern by knives in what appeared to be a Topan death ritual. Vice President P.J. Vasquez found Malloy's body, and now he's dead, shot in the head and left to fed the fish.

Perhaps there's a curse. If this author turns up dead, take heed.

And so Whitney von Vaam joins the ranks of Eutopian mysteries. Much like the loss of the steamship Eutopian Star, or the ghost stones of the W.E.T., von Vaam has transcended the mundane into the bizarre. Perhaps if they find her body, or find her, this ghost can be put to rest.

Extra Extra!!

A blast has rocked the nation today. The ECB, Eutopian Central Bank, was attacked. An explosion has caused extreme damage to the building although it is still structural sound. Colateral damage includes rupturing a gas line connecting to the New Lancaster Children’s Hospital, and causing an evacutation of that building. No word on any injuries that caused.

The Neuwestbaden Stock Exchange was also shut downas a result, but the ECB stated that the countries gold and other financial reserves are safe.

The attack comes at a time when there was little evidence of homegrown terrorist groups. Past groups having been seemingly eradicated. This terrorist attack, targeting the Eutopian Central Bank as it did, is likely a leftest strike. It is an obvious "capitalist" target and likely high on the hit list for communists terrorists. There is as of yet little reason to think foreigners were directly involved although indirectly is definetly possible.

THE FRIENDS OF DURRUTI

You don't have a peaceful revolution. You don't have a turn-the-other-cheek revolution. There's no such thing as a nonviolent revolution. Revolution is bloody. Revolution is hostile. Revolution knows no compromise. Revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way.
-Malcolm X

The Friends of Durruti claims responsibility for the attack on the ECB.

Who are we? Perhaps it is best to say what we are not. We are not the intellectuals drawing castles in the sand accomplishing nothing. We are not the bitter sectarians that argue endlessly over trivial details while the proletariat remains in slavery. We are not the Stalinists and Maoists, who want to organize society into a gigantic barracks. We are not those that get elected with the intention of changing the system, but are instead changed by the system. Capitalism cannot be reformed. We won't settle for State Capitalism and call it Socialism. We will settle for nothing less than full Revolution. The most advanced elements of the working class have organized to fight for freedom and equality by any means necessary. We call for:

-Destruction of the existing class rule, by all means, i.e., by energetic, relentless, revolutionary and international action.
-The ownership of the means of production by those who have rights to it, the workers
-collective ownership of all land
-The destruction of the bourgeois capitalist republic and all oppressive heirarchal social structures and the establishment of a worker's state and Soviet Congress.
-The creation of Revolutionary Syndicalist unions for the purpose of governing the work place
-The creation of a gift economy

Comrades, this is a call to arms! Take what is rightfully yours from the pig bosses that drain you daily of spirit, humanity, and body. By any means necessary.

-Buenaventura Durruti

Although the past saw connections between some higher ups at the then socialist party, there is no evidence that anyone of power in the current one has any connection. The ESA however has seen some lower members join, that seem a fair bit red even compared to the old man of the party.

Langley back and burning the midnight oil brightly.

Jake Langley is working his way back into politics again. All sorts of people have been coming and going at his personal office recently. Rumours are already floating of a possible presidential bid, or possibly an assembly run next election cycle.

The markets are expected to open back up this coming monday (not our monday an ingame one :) ;) ) and we plea for anyone who had been thinking of it, to invest now in the nations stocks. Instead of a big slide, a big rise would go fair to healing the economic wounds from the recent terrorist strike.

There is talk brewing again of the VAT. There is still no reason to support the bill in its old state, hopefully a new proposal with a little more sanity will finds its way to the voting booths instead of the anti-logic one of last time.
Any bill that thinks a family van could count as a luxury item but a speedboat not a luxury does not deserve another attempted vote.

*A special edition is printed up with a small ad added in and shiped to many embasses, consulents and other buildings housing many a foreigner.*

For sale! A huge load of coal. Where to inquire? You humble host nation!

Recharged and ready to roll?

Amric Al'Aeshir has returned to public life and is primed to reclaim his number 1 spot in the media, or is he? Is the time off and lost stories too much of a burden to overcome? Can he rebuild political ties as well as restore his business and media to their former glory? We eagerly wait to find out as even we have grown tired of having not much more then our own paper to read. It makes it hard to line our bird cages a bit.

Also recharged seems to be other sources of media. TV, radio and print are growing stronger the past few days. There could be a bit of competition growing soon between opinions and ideas in the media.

There is also word that the ECL is going to try and reach for the golden prize here and pull off a million working person march. Just what kind of people they did not specifiy. Since the march is supposed to "end subservience to the power of the privileged few," it is likely that they expect anyone not in the top ranks to march. Just what the top is they didnt specifiy so we are guessing those working 40 hours or more are invited. However seeing as this would be in conflict with those middle class people who retired already, this must not be their method of selection. The demands are for a 6 hour workday. Apperently they dont want to demand 8 hours of pay for those 6 hours of work since they never mentioned that so they want a 25% cut in pay. A rather odd demand but the ECL sadly has a few odd-ducks in charge currently. Hopefully they will work for better goals such as more equalized pay or possibly work to improve the economy so that unemployed people can find work rather then demands to march, although this would provide exercise. A more solid idea would be to march for an infrastructure improvement plan, not only would this employ many people it would increase the standard of living for the entire country.

Paper thin-support Rally!

The latest numbers have been published for approval ratings for the president and general assembly. There is not much change for the general assembly, their support has dropped 3 points down to 33% from 36% of the last poll. These numbers are not totaly unexpected however, as the assembly has had continued trouble finding its mission for this term. Even when a swift vote is done it was not a terribly influencing one.dfff

The president found himself with a much higher approval number. His approval rating had climbed to 50% although this is off a bit of the higher 53% shortly after the recent terrorist attack. Previous polls had placed his approval numbers at 41%, showing a small but steady increase of the earlier reported 39% support.

The presidential support numbers however are not as solid as they appear. Although Josephus approval ratings have been rising, much of the rise is not solid support. With the assembly looking even weaker by comparison, its easier to see the president of doing better. The president also got the boost mostly as a result of reaction to the terrorist strike, and its hard to keep support from such an event up for long. However the assembly has passed a bill recently to appoint Hawton Tilly to the office of Commissioner of Justice. If they can continue their revival the support numbers may very well end up swapping soon.

We also have to print a tiny correction for The Eutopian Today, they stated that THE cabinet had fled, attempting to tell their readers that the whole cabinet had fled, well sadly the rust isnt quite cleaned off their printers, MERL Lundgren is running free still working around the capital holding meetings and forming plans for the newly appointed office. How do we know this you may ask? Well he is the one who edited this in!

One Problem Solved with plenty to take its place.

Despite some minor attention eventualy by the government it only took 1 person to solve the lumber industries stagnation. Amric Al’Aeshir Holdings with its huge reserves of money simply flung a huge sum of money at the problem and instantly thousands back at work. By creating a new custom floors division of the company, Amric Al’Aeshir has managed to revive a dieing industry.

In other interesting news, Mountain Rescue Crews near the Eutopia/Tilapia border say that they have found the remains of an unidentified hiker however there remains little of his remains due to what appears an explosion. People on hand said it appeared like a landmine explosion.

In other more depressing and yet not suprising news our nation once again finds itself frowned upon by the world. Apperently the fact that our country has internal problems means that few other countries are willing to help us solve our internal problems. Most of the world and in particular the stubburn US, seems to believe that by not helping our country out they are looking out for our best interests and in the end not assisting us will benefit our country.

First Vote of the Term!

The Psychedelic Drug Reform Act (PDRA) is the first bill up for vote. Taking little time for a minor edit it is already up for vote and likely to swiftly pass. This bill will allow certain drugs such as psilocin, mescaline, LSD, to be prescribed but only under tight conditions. With the large majority the UMP won the party is likely to be able to pass a budget without problems. What kind of focus the budget would have is a guess but likely working towards a sane balance since any wild budget proposal will lead to death at the polls next term.

Some progress towards military modernization, possibly with help from Japan or Israel is a possibility as well, since neither is directly part of the EU or American embargo and could possibly be persuaded to sell or at least help consult with arms modernization vital to securing national stability so the US stops their damaging embargo.
