Phantom of the Election

First we would like to take a minute to apologize for the gap in our publishing. There was some problems to deal with and although we missed some gloriously boring Unity Party speaches, no offense ment as some of the most important speaches tend to be dull, we are now back in session.

There has been a man going about to and fro that has made his prescence known to the nation. The Vicsount of Dunwich has been all over the nation during this election cycle and everywhere he seems to go, problems follow. To be fair his most recent visit to the PURE was after it had already dreadfully weakened. However his early visits to the townhall led to people avoiding it like the plague. Most interaction involved him for quite some time. His words stung those who heard him and few stayed to tell the tale.

DisclaimerThis is ment to be a mini satire, the Viscount as managed to travel quite a bit recently and many speaches and debates have been had with him.

Elections near
Time to vote is nearing on us. Once more the people will have their fate in their down hands and will have to decide who shall lead them into the future. Currently it appears that the Unity party, baring any unforeseen event, will sweep the presidency. They have campaigned harder and their opponents havent a strong enough core or alliance to rally around. The general assembly however will be a much more interesting affair. Votes are likely to be wide spread with support for multiple parties available. A very splintered assembly is quite possible, howver with the executive branch solidly in the hands of one party, a non-unified assembly might very well be able to work better then one filled with party cronies.

And the red hat is thrown into the wing

Not quite that far to the left but as close as we currently have, the The Eutopian Socalist alliance has thrown the hat of marxism into the wing. This new party has attracted quite a bit of following it seems, although much of it could be in lore of the old esrp. They have began to campaign somewhat and are off to a steady start.

They have some interesting ideas to propose. Some of them have merit, an increase in taxes on those making over 200k a year. They also propose luxery taxes, some of which might have value to them. A tax on gas guzzling vehicles however is rather foolish and stupid to be frank. A tax on gas at all will meen a higher tax on vehicles with poor milage, it is not fair to double tax someone who wants a bigger vehicle. They are earlier in their campaign then others but so far every good idea seems to come with a bad one.

The Day nears

Time is closing in on the elections. Parties are getting lists perfected and submitted and speaches continue. The Unity party has adopted a comfortable, if slowed pace. The socialists are in high gear trying to close the gap for their late start and late formation. An interesting little bit of words were spoken there recently. The socialists said "And as long as they continue proposing ludicrous, insane and unEutopian Bills I will continue to do so." and this took as a bit of a surprise. It was a socialist party very much similar to this one, with similar leadership that proposed the donut bill, Josephus apperently no longer feels the need to mock the assembly and the nation and will no longer waste time on insane bills we hope. Since he is the expert of such bills, having been involved with many himself, he should be quite knowledgeable on what is or isnt ludicrous.

The UP continues to put its audience to sleep, as the UEF speaks of doom and gloom and the Socialists promise to behave themselves this time, but these are still better then the near silent P4P. Who should you vote for? Our opinion will shortly be made at which time our favorite will be known and the others will continue to get the same treatment as now.

Vacations are nice, but work doesnt wait

Much of our staff was taking a recent break and has now come back to work. We apologize for the gap in out publishing, and mostly we apologize to the UEF, we were scheduled to conduct an interview but that fell through on our part, and we apologize again. Onto other business.

With the polls heading towards the final hours and most campaigning behind us the nation holds its breath to await the results. Such a time as this requires experience in the assembly, and though late we would endorce the UP for assembly. We believe they would be best able to take lead in the assembly and get the job done and work in. Others lack experience and guidence but should they get a fair shot and the take hold of the speakership they can guide the nation through the times ahead. As far as the presidency goes, we are taking no direct opinion on that here and will watch as the chips fall how they will.

Should there be a fractured Assembly, with many nearly equal parties, the speaker will be hard pressed to keep an agenda moving, for the sake of the nation we can only hope a strong man finds his way to that seat, should that happen.

A letter arrives at the desk of the business editor of the New Republican newspaper, containing a press release:

The Central Atlantic Free Trade Association (CAFTA) has commissioned a poll on attitudes towards trade, travel, and citizenship. To get a copy of the response form, please visit CAFTA or following link:

Slow as dirt news day

There is not much to report currently. Campaigns have stopped and some say Amric simply talked himself till he lost his voice, saying their crusader for the truth wouldnt have stopped his speaches for any other reason simply because the polls are already closed.

We are waiting and as soon as word comes in the printers will fire up and we shall be hitting the streets with reports and questions

Election Results In!

In a massive victory, Amric Al'Aeshir was elected president with a hair under 66% of the vote going to him. While some call this a smashing success, we note that despite a very aggressive and successful campaign, the UP candidate was able to only get 2/3 of the votes. Every possible advantage was in his favor and he might come out and start with a fairly low approval rating depending on his early decisions.

The Assembly however saw a bigger win for the UP securing over 2/3 of the vote and 6/9 assembly seats. They now possess total control of the assembly able to pass any bills they want over the opposition. Despite a late creation, the ESA did secure 2 seats leaving the UEF to content with only 1 seat.

This is a smashing victory for the UP but likely to be short lived as they will likely never again see such success even should they stay together. The late breakup of the P4P gave them an ever better shot at assembly seats. There were very few invalid seats overall and there seems to be no doubt Amric won clear and strongly. With around 2/3 of voters turning out, this also leaves little doubt as to the winner and who people want to see running things.

A new flag was also voted on and the victor shall be displayed here.

Official Presidential cabinet list

Hawkton Tilly- MDIS-Ministry of Defense, Intelligence and Security
Konstantin Vilms- MIDA-Ministry of Infrastructure and Domestic Affairs-VP
Jake Langley- MERL-Ministry of Economy and Labour Relations
John O'Floinn- Attorney General
P.G. Talbott- MTIA-Ministry of Trade and International Affairs

These are the names picked officialy by recently elected president Amric Al'Aeshir. Deputy positions are currently unknown, although we are starting to pursue that issue to try and get information as soon as possible. The list leaves the Ministry of Environmental and Social issues to be ran personaly by the president himself. A list with experience but without knowing who if any deputies will be choosen we cant yet decide whether all of these choices are good for the country or just good for the president.

The first speach was not as long as many expected and there is as of yet no word as to who the UP plans to nominate for Speakership. Vilms has been choosen for Vice Presidency. This is an experienced line up to be sure but perhaps TOO experienced a one leaving no real roles for the next generation currently.

The President says he also officials recognizies Tilapia and St. Esprit. and also he suggested that dual citizenship for those who live in Tilapia and St. Esprit with EUtopia as it appears. He also desires no border guards, good in theory but we shall see whether this is a safe idea currently.

He went on to say he will periodicaly address the nation. Apperently now that he has been elected he no longer feels the need to connect and communicate with the people nearly as much as he did while running. Hopefully this is not a sign of times to come when the press cant get any straight answeres out of the Presidency. Also proclaimed the dawn of a new age, one with new ideas and new plans but not new people to implement them. This is not quite a new age yet as we are in transition to hen the new politicians of a new generation get higher roles of the government.

I must say that I was quite appalled at the unfounded speculation published in the last issue of the New Republic. The author, with no basis in fact, suggested that with his assumption of the Presidency, Amric Al'Aeshir will suddenly be hesitant to talk to the people of Eutopia or to deal with the press. As someone who has held the Presidency, and actively engaged the press and the people, I can say that the President's statement that he will make talk periodically to the nation is exactly what you want to hear from a President. The President's responsibilities are quite staggering and it is a job and a half. President Al'Aeshir quite astutely noted that his time is best spent dealing with Eutopia's many problems, not mingling with reporters and considering that he is one of the most down to earth people I know, I do not fear for a moment that he will lose touch with the average Eutopian. Indeed his prompt, clear, and informative responses to this paper's several inquiries makes clear that he will indeed be accessible to all. I hope that in the future this paper will choose to more clearly delineate between its news and opinion articles, especially when the opinion is little more than unsubstantiated speculation.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jonathan Glasser

Response

Since you obviously did not read the article to its fullest, we shall quote for you "Hopefully this is not a sign of times to come when the press cant get any straight answeres out of the Presidency." Note that nothing is said there that there will be NO response by the president to the press. Never once did we say he will get out of touch with the people. His speach spoke of periodicaly. He didnt say weekly or monthly or any time table or even a concrete figure. He might as well have said from time to time we will brief the people, could be once a day could be once a month. It worried this paper that such a vocal candidate might possibly turn silent so soon, and apperently it worries the UP that they might get called on running a campaign on a false promise of being open to the people. He didnt stay around there for questions and went right to his VP, we had to go to the presidential press room to get our answers since he apperently didnt plan to take any questions outside the law office where he gave his first presidential speach. For its first press conference the UP could have easily allowed a question or two.

We do appriciate the fact that the government reads this paper but in the future, it would be polite to more fully read the articles before accusing us of saying the president will become out of touch with the people. We showed concern at the lack of questions allowed at his first presidential press conference and at the vagueness behind "periodically".

(ooc you double posted that in the pm, first i thought it was a HUGE letter till i saw it was doubled :p )

Unity Party Declares War

On top of sending in letters asking how we could dare not print a 100% favorable view on the UP, they now use their paper to try and fix their little goof-up from the presidents first speach.

"It was recently reported in the New Republican that I stated I would address the nation periodically without giving any timetables as to WHEN I would do it. They are right. I didn’t give a time table. I’ll tell you why. Because I don’t know how often I will be doing my addresses to the nation."

He says that its right they didnt give a time table. Well that would be rather hard to stick to and thats fair. But if he really doesnt know WHEN he will find the time why say anything at all? He went on to talk about his business, MESA and a concert his is putting on. So apperently he has plenty of time to correct mistakes and could easily have left that little bit out of his first speach or simply promised to try and keep in touch with the people.
The paper also went on to brag about how many speaches were given. Although quite a good number they were given in a fairly friendly environment almost a void if you will. Why this is mentioned is another unknown seeing as no one befor bragged about setting records.

We recently conducted an interview with the current president, shortly after he won. He used quite a few words to try and hide what he is really saying.

"Each Minister and I have had some preliminary discussions of what each ministry needs to accomplish during this term. We pretty much agree in principle to the needs of the people that must be done in this term. I am not going to peering over their shoulders. I expect them to do their jobs. They have the experience. They know what needs to be done. I don't need to micromanage them. I personally was given a great deal of leeway on how I ran MHES under all the Presidents I served under. I see no reason to stop that practice. The ministers know what to do. They'll get their jobs done."

Or to sum thing up a bit better, he has a company to run, a paper to worry about on top of his presidential duties. So he wont really be supervising the ministries just checking on in from time to time to see if they are still alive. The president is quite a busy man to let the ministries run free to act how they choose, but not too busy to spend 15 minutes to actualy get to the point, he trusts them to do their job so wont really bother giving them any more guidence then some kinda of meeting they had earlier. He also went on to state that their assembly members might vote their hearts if they choose. Well its no wonder they might have trouble keeping a tight lid on the situation, they cant really threaten to remove everyone and replace them, for starters many of the assembly members are ministers, and they soaked up much of their leading membership base by declaring all ministrie theirs.

Also quite interesting is just WHY they have such an in depth plan for the various ministers yet not a clue as to who to run for the position of speaker? For being one of the most organized parties this is rather odd. They have so much experience and yet its all basicaly stacked to serve the executive branch, why? Why would a party, so well funded with such a powerful base and strong candidates stumble when it comes to the assembly? They have busy people there, so busy that there is almost no one left to run for speakership. They basicaly were granted power by the people and are running in all directions so fast they forgot they need SOMEONE to run as their speaker candidate. Why with such an important time ahead of us and critical days ahead and after running on a campaign of experience would they possibly very well end up with a rookie, so to say, running the whole assembly! Why would they dupe the people like that by saying experience on one hand then sliding a newcomer into such a prominent role?

Why would such an organized, well thought out, aggressive campaign totaly fall apart and forget something so important as the SPEAKER of the assembly? Why do they feel such a need to defend the president and to state his many jobs could keep him from talking openly to the people? If this isnt the case then why bother saying anything at all? If the president is going to be so busy why not let a VP run his company more for a while? They seem to be in no big hurry to recruit deputies from other parties either, what exactly they are doing right now is quite an unknown. Why are there holes begining to pop up more frequently and why are they still do defensive on issues? Is there more to this then the public knows or are we just seeing things? If we are making all this up then why would so much energy be spent in so many places and then leave holes in others? This simply does not make sense.

Fair is Fair

The mini fued between the powers that be and this paper has continued a bit. The Eutopian times has gone on to publish a peice saying that this paper is above such things as our last issue. They also go to refute claims by The Scuttlebutt, which while funny dont really tend to hold water. They said we were just out seeking headlines with our last issue, well to that we have an answer.

To be fair the other parties have not yet put forth a candidate for the spot of speakership. However also to be fair, one party, the UEF, has only 1 assembly member, and the other, the ESA, while having 2 members stands no real chance of taking the spot in an UP dominated general assembly. There is little reason for them to put any effort into securing the position unless the UP intends to hand them the spot for some reason. At such a time it still wouldnt have mattered to try and campaign or make a big deal over the race as the UP basicaly picks the person and thats it.

To be fair to the President he does have a lot on his plate to handle and needs to devote his time to running the government. Also to be fair if the UP hadnt drafted nearly the whole UP leadership into the government, leaving no one behind to turn the lights off, they wouldnt have a personnel crunch. The Eutopian times has 2 editors and 2 commentators and should have no problem sharing the load.

To be fair Amric's company should be secondary concerns for him and should not be interfering with his term, nor should his position in the Eutopian Times. But to be fair once again they do need an outlet and a man should be allowed to pursue his passions. This will be an interesting term and hopefully the government will be fair in its governing and the people fair in their actions.

Letter!
Dear Michael,

It would help if yo actually got the name of the paper, the Eutopian Today, correct. I don't believe there is a Eutopia Times in publication right now.

As for your points about who would be running for speaker, the UP does have thoughts on it. But I will let the chairman of the party discuss it. That is his job, not mine. I have to reiterate that I am the President, not the leader of the Unity Party.

Plus you forgot to mention that I have appointed Mr. Lucien Napier as the new Ambassador to the United States. I am hoping other people come forward, eager to serve their country in Ambassadorial positions to various nations/regions of the world.

Amric Al'Aeshir
President of Eutopia

Response

First off we apologize for the name error and rest assured those responsible for providing the name cards for us to use have been sacked and beaten with a wet noodle. Actualy they are fine but we did give them a stern finger pointing. Amric brings up a good point when he states he isnt the UP party leader. Of course one would hope that BEING president would provide him with some insight into the decision making, seeing as he more or less runs much of the nation, if he doesnt really know then well thats a very scary thought.

We didnt mention the appointment because Fair is Fair was an opinion type and not a news type peice. Considering we were analyzing the difference situations between the government and our criticism I would hope the president could tell the difference. In the Eutopian Today he goes out of his way to inform when an editorial is being written, we hope our readers can tell the difference between issues and parts of issues. Just because a small peice of news isnt reported doesnt meen it didnt happen. It would be quite silly to drop in a 2 line paragraph with the sole purpose saying one man was appointed ambassador into a peice analzying the current criticism and counter fire from the government.

Although the Scuttlebutt tried to prove their paper holds more water we suspect foul play was involved. We tried to get one of their older copies from people, cant use new ones they might have stacked the test, but no one had a newspaper called The Scuttlebutt. One of our guards daughters however had one that was being used to line the bottem of her bird cage, we had to disenfect it first. She didnt get the bird yet but we werent taking any chances dealing with a paper with the word butt in it. After our test all we could prove was carpets soak up water well since neither paper really stopped the water.

News News and more News

The UP finaly settled on Timothy Wellesford for their assembly member to run for speaker. Baring some secret agreement to lose on purpose there is little reason to believe he wont become the next speaker of the assembly. While he should be a solid choice, given the nature of the assembly, he will be mostly stamping any bills the UP agrees on, due to their iron grip on the assembly.

Mr. Lucien Napier has been appointed by President Al'Aeshir to be the new Eutopian ambassador to the United States. The US has also appointed a new ambassador, Dr. Asimov Yim, and he will no doubt be working closely with Napier to try and improve relations. Trade, tourism and most importantly the arms embargo will need to be worked on and treaties worked out for the benefit of both nations.

Shiek Al-Andalusi has put a motion before the Attorney General about the banning of the "islamic hijab" by a school district. Due to the limited scale of the banning and the lack of any reason for the assembly or president to support such a ban we expect the courts to work this out and fix the situation for the benefit of all concerned.

Deputies are now filling in some roles and reporting for duty in some minitries. Currently there is Prof. Leonard Schneider, Deputy MERL, also Michael Marine has made his way into the spot of deputy for the MIDA. Alexis Keller appears to be deputy MESA, although we have had difficulty locating any official public word on that beyond the presidents stated plan to do that.

Finaly we would like to take a minute to discuss something that seems to be lacking in public discussion. People talk about fixing up and modernizing the infrastructure but little is heard about all sorts of expansions we can do. New ports, new rails and new highways would go far to help out. Perhaps exploration for any new offshore areas for a few oil wells? While the nation needs much fixing up, expansion and improving beyond just what we have now is an exciting idea.

Life in TNT?

To continue their media counter blitz the UP has sicked another attack dog article on this paper. The first point they bring up is that its not really news when we commented on Timothy Wellesford being a solid choice for speakership spot. Well seeing as we are neither a government funded media nor one funded by public contributions, beyond the fact people pay to buy the paper which is not donations, we have the right and responsibility to our readers to give analysis also. People dont read the paper just to see hard facts and nothing else, it is not forbidden to analyze an event or appointment. Seeing as he goes on to say he agrees with our analysis we really dont see the problem behind giving an opinion. We reported the man is running for speaker, news, we then went on to give our judgement and opinion of such an appointment. If TNT has such a problem with opinions maybe they are in the wrong business?

They also go on to say "stamp any bills the UP agrees on, due to their iron grip on the assembly", is inflammatory language. Well sorry we arent sugarcoating your total dominating control of the assembly but seeing as the UP more or less can pass any bill they want to, its fair to call it an iron grip. Amric had an iron grip on the hearts and minds of the public or else he would currently be only a visitor to the presidential office instead of an occupent. The UP obviously is afraid of the fact we are not falling into line. The Worker, normaly critical of the government has been totaly silent. There is a void recently that must be filled. The UP runs this nation with VERY little opposition from outside its ranks, and the public deserve to know if there are problems with the people they elected.

They also go to say that due to the huge distances and the fact they are going to be working in other countries that Lucien Napier and Asimov Yim wont be working together. Well I have news for him, unless one plans to ruin relations and another fix them, they are working together, working together to fix the currently weak relations between out two nations. Sure they cant meet together and grab a few beers but you dont always work face to face with people when united in a common goal BOTH are working on. He never went on to address the point that new treaties need to be worked out, and that isnt news its a fact. Apperently TNT doesnt let good facts get in the way of helping the UP counter-media blitz.

Not a word was mentioned about the entire rest of the article, carrying on news and what we feel is a good idea. Perhaps TNT doesnt like the idea of expanding the infrastructure?

Letter Received

To Whom it may concern,

Although I respect your right to say whatever you wish in your paper, please remember that the media that has attacked you is neither government owned, or Party owned. Individuals may make any statement they wish, but that does not mean it is attributed to any party.

I have agreed to no attack against your paper, which I read when I am able. Neither has a majority of the Unity Party. All the attacks that have been given, or argument that has been laid out, have been personal oppinions, not the oppinions of any party or the government.

Thank you for your time,
Konstantin Vilms, MIDA and Vice President.

Response

We appriciate the time people are taking to write in, this just goes to show what a widespread and active auidence we have. We are also concerned with the current problems taking place between this paper on certain individuals.

While the media that has attacked us is not government owned or official UP media, it is from that source. Members of that party, from multiple directions, have waged a war on this paper. Angry letters and attacks from more then one media source have occured to this paper. Much of this is from UP members, of which some are fairly influential. If the UP feels this is bad then they would take steps to stop such actions. The lack of action on the part of its leader, meens either he doesnt feel this is a problem, or he agrees with the attacks, or he just doesnt read our paper. In any case, we will not back down to pressure from outsiders. When there is news to report, it will be reported and analyzed. When there is need for opinion peices those will be printed. When mail arrives, it will be responded to. We appriciate Vilms obvious concern about the current situation and we are concerned also. The fact that many members of the UP feel its their duty to attack us and harass this paper, gives us a right to defend it.

We would prefer to only have to report and analyze the news. If there were no unhappy letters to respond to and no potential problems to give opinion on and bring up debate about then we would be better off, but this is far from a perfect world.

We again thank Vilms for showing concern over a growing problem.

Just The Facts

Lucien Napier has died in a plane crash with no real cause known beyond some kind of instrament malfunction. What exactly went wrong is not yet known and there is no reports of who will be the replacement for Napier.

John Kenny was involved in an accident before the elections and this has now been confirmed. He is in the Eutopia General Hospital currently and recovering. He is recovering and expected to be fine after some downtime.

Sir Kevyinus Fox is back and alive but in trouble. There is a whole heep of trouble he is in and doesnt have a whole lot of assets left to recover with currently. He is now free to go about his business for the moment but still has much work to do to normalize his life fully.

The military is in serious trouble after the split up of certain provences from the country. The navy is a virtual wreck and the army is bruised but still in fairly decent shape. The airforce is still fairly useless from an operational standpoint due to inability to maintain their equipment because of the lack of parts. This situation is rip for a total reform and reorganization and is one of few ways to correct the situation, and a rebuilding from the ground up is quite possible.

There is a move to create a free-trade zone between the nations of this island. A conference is in the works to work out the details and keep trade flowing freely around the island and general central atlantic.

Re-writting history?

The Eutopian Today has made its own error recently. Stating that Jacob Lundgren was not elected president and totaly forgetting about him. While a retraction was printed, we feel were it not for the bias of the chief editor this would not have happened. Apperently so blinded by his current fued, he fails to even think about JL and to block him out from his memory. Why he continues in his course of distaste for me and his strange obsession with fighting this fued and trying to conduct a media battle while president is beyond any of us here. Frankly we dont understand why he doesnt focus on the nation and take back his role as managing editor after this term is a mystery.

Assembly Open for business

The Assembly has officialy opened its doors for business and has started quietly. They have not yet started to conduct any real business and no deputy has yet been officialy named. Currently we have big expectations but we will not have any clue as to its performance until some bills have come up, debates started and passed.

Ongoing struggles

The Unity Party has continued with a slow pace and has not made much use of its overwelming control of the government. There is now more friction between them and the other parties. The UEF is no doubt unhappy with the removal of Kazimierz Recyznski from the position of deputy MDIS. The Eutopian Worker has recently published a small peice criticizing the government for trying to quiet the disenting voice of Kazimierz and it seems one of the few things motivating the ruling party is actions on the part of the 2 other parties with power, and mostly has been reacting and not acting as much as they could.

Now whether or not this is telling the tale of events yet to come or if the slow start is merely part of the process of cleaning house and getting into place a plan for intense action is not known. But clearly we can see that nearly sole control of the government has not been as wisely used by the Unity party as people hoped. Despite the power to move bills swiftly through the general assembly there has not been a whole lot of actions coming from there.

Silence

So far all the promised plans and ideas discussed in the campaigns of various parties and peoples have led no wheres. While this should be mainly the fualt of the UP, the opposition has done little to introduce bills for debate. The assembly has been without much activity and needs a fire light under their butts to get into gear. What little has been proposed has not had much action go on with it. Perhaps its time the people organized and made up their own list of bills they want passed and deposited them on the speakers desk with a note, stating that time is running short and we want action to fix our nations problems, not more of the same we have seen this term.

Oddities in the news. Leader of the now basicaly dead P4P is being sued over his car wreck. Lt. Commander Henry J. Tulp met with leader from NATO and discussed the current arms embargo. Three US Senators, Blowerd, Clarke, and Bendi are here to investigate the nation. No doubt to decide whether we are falling into decay and to pass judgement on the country for their masters in Washington. While we hope for a good report, internationaly, we have not had many friends recently.

True Lies?

Such a line could easily describe the Assemblys activity to date. While activity is starting to kick up, little has still been done about it. Currently debate centers on a potential VAT, value added tax, and the best ways to go about adding such to the country. While generating new revenue is important, it could be premature if the most critical needs are dont start to get addressed first. You dont go and get a loan figuring you will need it soon, you pick out the house then finalize financing. The assembly MUST tackel military reform and not only modernizing but expansion of the infrastructure. A respectable, stable and safe country will promote investment and economic growth more then any tax cut or government free-for-all spending plan.

Attack of the dead party?

Someone recently brought to attention the fact that some activty has been seen in the P4P hq, and we dont meen a gang has taken over the building to play "hockey" in. The possiblity of a revival of the P4P could help keep some voters from being candidate-less in the next election and helping make sure everyone has a party fit for them. Hopefully this isnt just some house clearing before the doors are locked up because it would be a shame if the people threw an election and no one showed up to run.

Japan, A Friend of Our Nation

In what could be the begining of a break with the US and others, Japan appears to be setting a small trade deal with a few peices of military hardware at stack. Japan has been a small home-away from home for me recently and any news of friendly relations or goods news from them, is good news for us. Possibly just a feeler for Japan to test the waters, or possibly a simple small deal, either way this is good news as we try to normalize all international relations.

Speaking of relations, The Senate has shown a strange sort of speed with the passing of bills officialy recognizing El Reino Tilapia and Le Republique Latine de St.Esprit. The Senate finished the process for a bill that eliminates the draft. The basics are, elimination of the draft, all current conscripts will be discharged upon completion of their service. The draft could in theory be brought back on some limited terms if an emergency calls for it, and special provisions are in place. There is a section in place regarding education, exact details are a bit lenghty and those interested can call in to any number of sources or check online. There is also a small section about potential bonus and rewards.

The reform of the military is of vital concern and while this quite possibly is an important first step, much work is still needed. Especialy since a strong economy is needed to maintain a strong security and armed forces.

Normally we title our papers issues with an appropriate title, but this one is straight out of opinion land and this is a special issue.

The Scuttlebutt is trying to run a straight up news story by how its current issues are progressing. While we applauded and laughed at in good humour its other printings, its current strategy is both unfair and poorly planed. In the first place people dont read their paper to receive legitimate news. If they had concern about an issue they could have used another media outlet or a different method. A paper that prints an interview with a ghost is not a source of goods news. A paper that normaly tries to create humour, trying to promote a true news story is wrong. Not only are they printing a serious news story, they promise its only one then go right on to follow up with another serious issue commenting on a letter sent in. During campaign season for a "fun paper" to be conducting a media campaign such as this, is showing obvious slant and goes to show they care nothing about the little girl and only want to hurt the P4P and Mr. kenny.

We call on the scuttlebutt to either come forward and admit to extreme bias and allowing personal opinions to influence their printing. If they were truely concerned they would have come forward on a true media source for example, a tv interview instead of confusing their readers and misleading the public. They expect humour and instead find a series of articles about a major P4P member during campaign season. The Scuttlebutt has no excuse and this is wrong. This strategy does nothing to help the girl and only hurts a national political figure during an election season.
