Back in the Saddle Again

Yes thats right we are back and printing again! After a brief period of being unable to even print let alone distribute, we have repaired the damage to our first facility and added some new ones in the capital. Dont worry no one was fired anywhere and we are looking to bring in some new writers currently.

EUtopia is currently in quote a chaotic stage with much going on and few heros to rally around. The mess is trying to resolve itself and the formation of new parties is underway for a new age. Until just recently any foreign relations took place with countries off this island but now it will have to also take place amongst the citizens of this island.

We would like to take a minute to announce the opening of Moonbucks! A brand new coffee shop in EUtopia city. This will branch out to become a franchise shortly. Come on in and stop by and if you get in during the first few days we provide free coffee samples shipped to your home, just have to provide an address to ship to.

Troubled times ahead

Well now that new politics are forming up and new parties trying to make their splash its time to reflect on just what could be, but beforehand we would like to take a minute and thank the Eutopian Today for welcoming us back, we may not have their big staff or unlimited budget but we shall do what we can to give them a run for the money.

Some parties are making a bid for acceptance onto the national scale but so far things seem to be shaking up to be quite a bit different from the past. No socialist party or any follow up to the old ESRP seems to be emerging. Few talk about the far left like days gone by and currently the right and oddly enough monarchists seem to be growing in support. Long thought dead, a possible constitutional monarchy could quite well see birth in this new and weakened EUtopia. The split has caused many problems and its anyones guess as to how the change and loss of land will affect politics. One thing appears certain, nearly all EUtopians still here are proud to be here and willing to stick to the country through bad times and good. The lost lands view seperate as the key to prosperity, well as long as any problems over there dont find their way over the border then peaceful relations are quite possible.

The world of business is alive and well. Rumour on the street is a possible alliance between 2 companies, Lundgren and Amric Al'Aeshir. With little in common, investors are guessing as to what the nature of such a potential alliance could be. New taverns and business are opening up and it seems the seperate might have been a breathe of new air the nation needed to kick-start itself.

We apologize for the shortness of our last print, supplies have not fully rebuilt yet from the storms.

Invasion of the Media?

As each day goes by it seems to bring in another peice of printed media. More people are setting themselves up to distribute their voice accross the nation and get their opinions heard. Whether many of these will report news stories mostly or opinion peices mostly is totaly unknown. So far there have been new papers spreading and people signing up for subscriptions but not a lot of printing. Some faces are old and others new, much like the new breakdown of political parties.

There is still a monarchist party with many firmilar names and faces, some on the left have ended their breaks and vacations and are at it again. However the extremes have not shown up much. Despite a small attempt at such, no far left party. Some former ETE members are involved in politics but not quite as far off the mainstream as before. Perhaps people are afraid of going too off the wall with their opinions and getting into trouble with one of the many millions of lawyers that seemed to have crawled out of the woodworks. There has been many small debates going on and much political discussions as parties form and new members join and alter the original idea. Elections are slowing approaching and already posters are going up and slogans being made. What the new elections with a new government set-up will provide is a complete unknown to us all.

Past, Future, or Non of the above?

As parties continue to form up and elections slowly creap their way over, we here at The New Republican, cant help but notice the debates taking place. Some call past leaders wrong minded and used up. Other opinions are that those with experience should lead during the current crisis. While new blood is welcome to join in the political process, some people think elders shouldnt be involved at all. It is an interesting time we are in as new faces form parties with old ideals while old names forge new alliances.

Debates rage accross the nation about various subjects and past events. Some point to problems from the past of how old leadership has failed and how new ideas should be tried. We agree that new ideas should be tried but not for the sake of it. With a strange smattering of parties accross the spectrum, ironicaly enough one of the few pillers is again a monarchist party. Other new groups are attracting widespread support but it is entirely uncertain as to how they will do, while the monarchists have had a common goal to unite them and stuck with it through times both bad and good.

It seems that there is no shortage of ideas but where the people will look for whos ideas to trust, is as of yet and for an uncertain time, a total toss of the dice.

And so it begins...

Silly season has kicked itself off as the Unity Party kicked off its campaign, as well as introduction of potential cabinet. They have announced intentions to nominate Amric Al'Aeshir for president, as well as a small list of other positions: Hawkton Tilly- MDIS Konstantin Vilms- MIDA Jake Langley- MERL. Vilms is their choice for vice president, according to the plan they have laid out. Some have called this move an act of desperation, being the newest kid on the block, they have jumped right into gear and are starting the chase for the office. The fact that they are already under way could signal a weakness and a need to cover a weakness of ideals and support, by trumpting accomplishments and speaches early then possibly turning the debate ugly later on when others get into gear.

One thing is obvious however, they have solid and clear goals as well as a plan. They seem to be organized well and are operating quite efficiently and got the jump on the other parties. We here feel that this is a good move but somewhat of a risky one. The Unity Party has began to lay its cards on the table, and they are thus much more easily brushed aside. This could pay off and hopefully this will be a clean campaign, as they seem to have started.

Slow Start for Some?

Earlier in the week we reported that the Unity Party had started its campaign. While this at first was appearing to be a quick jump and possibly a little pre-mature, the events, or lack ther-of seem to be proving that totaly false. Neither of the other parties have started a true campaign. Few words are coming from them and so far the Unity Party has had free-reign of the media. This seems an odd move for the other parties, while they could quite possibly pull the needed national support for president, more local elections could turn bad for them if they cant get their voice out to all corners of the nation.

Josephus could be key to multiple campaigns. He is both one of few truely experienced members in the P4P but also a potential huge liability with a huge train of baggage. He could make or break their campaign among the people. He is a veteran politician with many skills but having seen so many rivals and competitors before, will he underestimate someone and make a big slip-up?

With time ticking by one has to wonder just where are the other campaigns? Are they plotting or planning or cutting deals? Those of you who saw me run for the NA a few years ago know how much I, and many of you cant stand such partisan agreements. The nations future should be decided in the polls, not in someones backroom as people scheme away. Hopefully nothing sinister is being plotted and this is just a sign of confidence in the other parties, but as the hours pass one has to but wonder, why would you delay starting for so long after your potential rivals start up?

Another interesting rumour is that some newly rising politicians were seen in the docks together. Who are they? What are they planning? Will the Unions back their old supporter and just what kind of plans will people put forward to rebuild the nation and the military? All of these questions and more will hopefully be answered in the coming weeks.

Another day of solo campaigning

Well more time has past and still we hear nothing from the other campaigns. At this point I cant fail but notice they seem to be lacking in organizational abilities. Either there is one big plot under way here, or one massive deal being worked out, or the other campaigns are just...not well set. Seeing as there is not much else to work with we shall move right on to the Unity party, who at least has done us the favor of showing up for this election so far.

More speachs by the Unity Party have been made. So far there is nothing particular special about them. They are decent speachs, with ideals and goals and pledges. Nothing too concrete however and few numbers talked about. The theme so far doesnt seem to be too healthy or positive of a theme, but possibly a very truthful one. Our nation is not in prime health and needs time to heal its wounds. Despite the seriousness of the latest speach, there is not a whole lot to take apart and pick over. There are fair words and while earlier speaches spoke down on the Unity parties potential opponents, the latest one doesnt really mention them at all. They are keepy a fairly clean campaign, despite a few slip ups. However this doesnt meen all too much because there is hardly much to criticize when this is really almost the only show in town right now.

Wake up Call

Well the other parties finally woke up and are starting to campaign. As was feared they spent the days scheming how best to abuse the nation. They blame the past on the Unity Party so some how it benefits the country for them to carve up spheres of influence in private meetings. One would think they would want the people to decide the election but no doubt they have plans written up and and their "New Vision" is going to be new in name only. Same old backroom politics and no doubt there is much the people WONT be told untill its too late.

The Unity Party has proposed a 6% national sales tax. This would be troubling were it not neccessary for SOME new funds to be raised, and a tax such as this will not target a certain segment of the population. If done right everyone will be paying differently and no one will have a free ride or undue burden. The self-named "New Eutopians" have proposed taxes as well. Taking a page right out of Europe's book, they want a VAT. They dont mention what it will be on, what rates it will have or who will be paying it. They didnt mention anything at all about it really. No doubt trying to sneak in a big new tax raise and trying to sugarcoat it for the people. Apperently they dont feel its relevent to mention just WHAT kind of tax it will be. 1%, 5% 50%? We need numbers to know just how much they plan to take, but the young Eutopes dont have any for us.

Thats also quite an interesting theme, youth, vitality, fresh ideas. Sadly this is also a front, taking in such names as Murmurandus, Sergei and Tulp. How this is the party of only the new people and how they can criticize the Unity Party for being aged is beyond us. They have a few old names in their line up, who had quite an influence on the nation yet somehow thats irrelevent.

The P4P claims they will bring stability to the chaos our nations politics have become. Indeed, dictators can bring stability, and while they obviously are not such, it is interesting that they spent the early days of the campaign scheming with others how best to rule and run the nation, their way. There is nothing new about this, everyone has ideas. Although most good politicians try to share they ideas with the people, not hide facts from them and distort the truth. Stability with them would come yes, the stability that secret meetings and lies and hiding the truth from us brings, stability off one voice rule!

_______________
Mr. Lundgren,

I might have been a Eutopian for a long time, ever since I was born actually yet I wonder what your papers standards for Political experience are. You call me and I quote "quite an influence on the nation". Well there are hunderds of people who have been member of a party, does that makes them very influencal? Furthermore I ask your paper to have some patience. The Campaign has just started and we will explain our ideas for VAT soon.

Lt. Commander Henry Jan Tulp

________________

First we give thanks to our first real write in to us of after the restart. We were begining to wonder if maybe we were providing the wrong address.
We did have patience but your party has not been very well organized so far with it campaign. They have been dragging their feet for quite sometime, but the Unity Party did jump the gun a little so we will lighten up a bit, for a small time. Indeed your name is very well known, as are others. It is very nieve of the P4P to claim to be the young and new politicians on the scene when many of its members have been around the block a time or two. Hopefully you will not hold back on the VAT, because as you well know, your opponents are not withholding information to the extent your party seems to be. We look forward to some details about the proposed new taxes.

I would like to inform the editor of the New Republican that by the law there aren't any "campaign days" as there are in other countries, so the New Republican can *never* claim we did things in the early days of the campaign, because there isn't any campaign season.
And we in the P4P will say and do what we want, whenever we want. And the NR can not say we are late for dooing anything, The P4P is never late, we do what we want in the exact time we want!

Sincerly Jonh Kenny

Indeed there are no set guidelines as to when campaigns should or must begin. There are no laws about penalties if you are not starting the same day as others. However if you feel the people dont need to hear your message and that it will somehow be magical and the people will ignore the Unity Party, which was out far before you campaign, then you are not using good sense. I admit, we cant call you late to the campaign as there is no magical bell, but you can be late compared to others. I look forward to seeing you do what you want and hope it turns out safe, but we call it as we see it. Had there not been an apperent agreement in the works I would say the P4P was just preparing and waiting for the right moment, but you werent. You were off plotting with another party. We are being a little more patient this next block of time ahead but if we see a mistake by any of the parties, we will call them on it. Its hardly fair to be openly critical of the UP when they were the only campaign going on.

Mr. Lundgren:

As a long-time subscriber and reader of The New Republican, I was surprised and saddened to see the party and coalition I have affiliated myself mentioned in the same breath as "dictators," solely (so far as I can ascertain) on the basis of certain private meetings we held to create the New Eutopia Coaltion.

I must ask you if you are so naive as to presume that the Unity Party sprung into being fully formed, a Pallas erupting from the brow of Jupiter? Are we to assume you believe that the august members of the UP awoke one fine morning, all sharing the same idea of forming a party? If you wish to tar us with a brush of jackboots and brown shirts, is it not appropriate for you to ask into the foundations of the UP as well?

The NEC was formed after lengthy and difficult pirvate negotiations between P4P and UEF leadership. I fully admit these negotiations did not take place in the public eye, but I do not how that indicates a fault on the part of the NEC, anymore then the presumed negotiations that founded the UP should reflect badly on them.

You accuse us of being fraudulent in our claim that we would bring new blood to Eutopian politics. I admit we have some veterans - a former president and some ministers - and I am proud of them and the wisdom they bring us. The majority of our party, however, consists of businessmen and accomplished professionals who have not been part of the political process. The UP, on the other hand, boasts three presidents and two vice-presidents, including those that directly preceded the breakup of our country. Yes, the UP has experience; should the Eutopian voters assume they learned from that experience, that they learned from their mistakes?

If the Republican is a newspaper, and not a partisan organ, then it should remove its editorial voice from its news articles, and honestly and clearly label editorial pieces as such.

I remain, a loyal reader,

/s/Lucien Napier, Esq.

Response

Starting at the end, all newspapers have their opinions involved. There is no true straight up plan old newspaper with no slant. However we are giving opinions on the election, not reporting a news event. We have not distorted anyways words. The coalition of the young, was called dictator was spending their early time plotting behind closed doors. They didnt consult with others or bring in a third party or the media or any neutral witnesses at all. They obviously have secret documents written up and are trying to hide facts from the people, that is totaly wrong. We never called you facsists, merely trying to establish one order rule. Indeed the Unity party didnt spring up over night, neither did it form when a bunch of power-hungry people got together and conspired and schemed. People with similar goals formed a party, it wasnt a hidden afair like how your coalition was formed.

Indeed the UP has much experience, perhaps a little too much. However it is up to the people to decide whether they should put them in charge or you in charge, but at least they arent distorting the truth. Just how much is this proposed VAT? We all know we need a source of capital to rebuild the nation, the tax they propose is 6% nationally, what is yours? You speak of taxes but never mention a number or where they take effect. Will it be 1%, 5%, 75%? The people should know beforehand each campaigns method to rebuild from the storms and split up. If you want to get out from under the cloak and dagger shadow, bring the facts to light. What rate DO you propose?

Letter to the editor: In response to your lastest article

Mr. Lundgren, you may never claim I don't want people to hear my messege, because I could not be the sposkman of the biggest party of Eutopia if I didn't want people to hear my messege. And you can call me late, compared to other people, but you can also call the UP earlier compared to other people, can't that be?
And How can you know I was not waiting for the right moment? Should I have started my campaign before knowing if the P4P would not be in a coalition? As far as I know. This was the best moment and if you say there was a moment before where the P4P was not so strong as it is today. Please tell me!

Sincerely Jonh Kenny

Response

Indeed i did call the UP early, as the papers show, however you followed up their jump start by sitting back. Indeed it is hard to campaign for presidency unless you know just who you are campaigning for, but nothing was holding back your party from starting its campaign for the assembly, unless ALL of them were at your back-room secret meetings? We are not campaigning for votes here, just trying to get the truth out. And the moment that is best for you, might not be best for the people of this troubled nation, but we shall see whos strategy plays out the best. Hopefully both campaigns will stay fairly clean and open minded.

And the Party Begins!

The campaigns are really getting underway now. First the NEC comes out with a rush of ads and speaches. The Unity response is a speach by Langley blasting them for being copy-cats. The NEC has proposed a similar in idea campaign and agenda as the UP but with its earlier start the UP has gone into a little more depth.

The NEC, despite a flurry of activity still has yet to say anything deeply on the key issues. Still its mostly light general basic proposals. Few details have emerged, and with them being key to who to vote on, the nation simply has to sit back and wait till the NEC catches up to the UP. Hopefully there will be debates which will allow the citizens to hear first hand what the candidates truely stand for, but nothing has been talked about there yet.

The UP's basic message is we have the experience to take the nation through these dark years, while the NEC says the years wouldnt be as dark if the previous administrations had done things right. While the NEC calls itself the new generation and the UP is refered to by them as the old guard, both sides are fairly similar in experience as new members sign up to the UP and old vets join the P4P, with the UEF dragging up the rear, possibly as the tie breaker for the P4P.

Extra Extra!

In what was one of the last moves we expected, the NEC has come out and publicly declared it will NOT have its campaigned affected by outsiders, such as their opponents, the press or as things seem, the people. They pledge to not reveal anything until they feel like it and wont bow to pressure. There would be no need for pressure if they would stop trying to hide the truth and just spit out their agenda. To come out and publicly say; ya we might tell ya something soon, but only if we feel like, its not like you need to know anyways...is just confusing to us here at The New Republican. What do they have to hide that they have to advertise that they feel no need to respond to the press concerns? If you too want to know, go to one of their speachs and ask whats up? Why the silence about your agenda?

The new Eutopian Military Thinktank has grown well and seems to be a solid voice for the people, and a way for any and everyone to get involved in the growing debate of just HOW to rebuild the military. We applaud this organization for its efforts to bring the people into matters of their national security.

Fathers and the sons they never had

The newest arguement between the 2 heated campaigns is over...well peoples fathers, or lack therof. There has been discussion of confusion over certain members of the NEC, who are not exactly life-long friends having recently formed up, getting accused of trying to take advantage of the kenny name, this is a cruel political trick that must be pointed out. During my early days in the political light, people tried to accuse me of using my name, Lundgren, in all sorts of ways, going so far as to say I accomplished NOTHING on my own. The Unity Party trying to exploit a small bit of misunderstanding and someone thinking he was doing a new friend a favor, is just not friendly. The Unity Party should drop this issue and move on back to the agenda they had been scoring points with.

Sadly the workers are not getting their fix of the media. The printers have been oddly silent over at the Worker and we do hope everything is ok with its illustrious owner.

Around and Around we go

Well each campaign continues to try and drive their support up while weakening the others. The UEF has finaly showed up and gotten some activity going. The campaigns are using their respective media to assist the speaches and mini debates they have going. And The Scuttlebutt made fun of both, though sneaking and extra hit or two in on the NEC.

The Worker rolled another peice off their printers and is back in the game. After being unusualy quiet for some time they slammed out with a peice titled
"Setting The Record Straight...Again" and this was quite an interesting peice. First talking about a press release Josephus made, which while it might have had the peoples interest at heart, really contained nothing useful people didnt already know. While he brings up a good point that there might have been more to be done that the then president Glasser didnt ask about, there was little action from Josephus beyond words. He didnt take it upon himself to act accordingly without waiting for the president and then simply laying back when the president didnt take direct control. Presidents appoint people that should be able to act fairly independant but apperently this never dawned upon Josephus. He goes on to say he rests his case, well if thats all he is going to go on for how he prepared the nation, he might as well have grabbed a sword and tried to kill the hurricanes for all the good his few words did. Perhaps he should have looked in the mirror before trying to pass the blame up the ladder.

The UP and NEC had a fun little time argueing to each other in the UP's campaign trail, then the NEC went on later to ask why the UP is bothering them at the NEC trail, despite having just recently brought the fight to them at the UP trail. This was yet another foolish request by the NEC campaign which is racking up quite a tally of foolish sayings. Admittidly the UP did bring up the foolish point about mistaking someones dad which brought the NEC to its doorstep, but as we all have been told many times, two wrongs dont make a right, while 3 left turns will.

End of conscription plan proposed

In one of their first real hints at what the details behind their agenda is, the NEC has proposed a plan to replace the current conscription system in place. What would take its place is a choice at age 18 between basic boot camp and 3 years in the reserve, or a lenght of community service. While a noble plan it does contain a few flaws. The first is the demand of a choice, this should be an option people can choose with potential rewards, not a forced decision. This would keep a potentialy large reserve body of soldiers in place without forcing everyone to seriously serve for a lenght of time and would seperate the forces up better. The problem we see is the vague wording with "six months of service to their local communities over the next 3 years," while a noble idea with much potential reward, this is very vague. 6 months of 40 hour a week work or 6 months worth of 2 hour days or what exactly? Hopefully information will be more forthcoming then their tax plan, as this holds some good promise to it.

The End so close to the begining?

Well as rumours fly around and confirmations come in, it appears the NEC is starting to wobble on its own foundations. It appears a small element of the P4P has split off, led by Alexi Gonzov, the announcement was followed by a small speach by newcomer to the NEC, Charles F. Johnston. It is uncertain just how big this split might be and just what affects might be felt. The presidencial race, while affected might not have as big a shift as a potential weakening of the P4P will for the assembly race. Right now we can only wait and see but it apears there is a new party forming, split from the P4P and there is no word on who they back for president, if anyone.

With a break up of the P4P possible, the UEF is likely to split off from the NEC, possibly picking up a few votes and try to position themselves for the assembly race and ignoring most of the presidential race. Right now all we have is guesswork and rumours to go on, but we will keep the people informed when news comes in and we confirm it and type it up.

The End has come

In a move that many had begun to expect to take place, the UEF has withdrawn from the NEC. Their Deputy, Lucien Napier, has taken the dive and launched a press conference explaining the weakness of the NEC presidential candidate as the prime cause of the collapse of the NEC. He has also offered to resign his position. Although the NEC had started to crack and weaken, the end has come with little if any word from the P4P itself. How they will take this breakup and splitup is left to rumours for the moment, but if their leadership holds strong they can still easily pick up a few assembly seats.

This leaves a potential new leftwing socalist party, a weakened P4P, The Unity Party and finaly the United Eutopian Front party to contend for the election. The UP candidate, Amric, seems to be riding high for the presidential seat but the assembly could end as a very mixed set. To that end we shall now likely see seperate campaigns from the UEF and P4P.

The UEF has already started its campaign with a stingy criticism of the UP and thrown down the gloves for what looks to be an interesting duel. With the P4P and UP themselves almost mini coalitions, it looks to be left to the newly forming socialist party and the UEF to pick and stick with recognizable idealogies. Whether having a more strict platform will help them by allowing people to more easily decide if they are right to vote for, or limit their membership is yet to be known.

Poll Info and A change of guard

There is new poll information available. Regarding the issue of the general assembly. The polls confirm that the UP has made up huge ground recently and momentum has them flying high. The P4P has made a small slip up, but its not clear if these polls include the possibly break-up the P4P has began. The UEF has slide slightly, most likely due to their lack of press till just recently, potentialy not counted in the polls. Of important is the increase from 8 to 12% of those not planning to vote by those polled. This is a small but marked increase, while those unsure has dropped slightly 5 points down to 36%. With such a large uncertain group of voters the assembly is still anyways game.

However it appears that with the UEF running a candidate that with the P4P slipping up and the Unity party acted very united, they have the upper hand currently with the presidential race. The UEF despite begining its campaign is struggling to make much ground up, with the Viscount of Dunwich messing about and smashing up their early words. He has terrible timing for the UEF who are trying to kickstart a campaign that is seperate from their former allies in the P4P. They are trying to position themselves as the strongest military party with a determined and tough foreign policy to make a new name for the country.

Fewer real details have rolled out then the people wanted with only 27% of those polled thinking the key issues have been discussed fairly well. With such a large percent of unsure people and many waiting on the campaigns words on key issues and those most important to them, much is still up in the air. One point is certain however, the Unity Party is on fire right now and while climbing high up, have not done much better then the others getting their details out. While doing a better job, they cant maintain their position on generic ideas alone.
