A key and a map to a warehouse outside of St. Brendenstown arrives for the Minister, along with a note.

After inspection, please electroncially transfer the remaining funds to the accounts sent to you earlier.

The President drops by to discuss the defense budget.
"I have ordered 30 SU-37 "Super Flankers". I agree our pilots will need more training. It would be foolish to crash those shiny new toys. General Condarski may have said these are better than we need right now, but we will be using these for a long time, so if we were to buy something older, over time we would have inferiority again. This will keep our superiority longer. I will announce the purchase shortly. There needs to be more to our air force than fighters, and there are the other services to consider as well. What are your plans?"

"I'll arrange a meeting on ENDTech when Condorski is back from Russia. I'm thinking about a new re-fuelplane for in-air tanking of the planes. Some new transport planes would be nice. I think my company, Start Avaitions Group, currently has more Hercules planes than the Eutopian Airforce.
I've also send a note about the purchase of the spare parts. We can also use that. Or buy second-hand planes. But we need something to rely on. And except the EU and VS there is not much to rely on. So we're back with the embargoes... Too bad."

With the spare parts for the F-5E II Tiger fighters, we can resume some flights again. And yes, some tankers (refueling aircraft) were on both my list as well as Tilly's. It will be easy to buy used cargo versions of a DC-10. the question is do we have any local manufacturers that can modify that into home grown versions of a KC-10 aerial tanker? How are the Hydra armored infantry transport vehicle and UAV's designs coming?

The UAVs I had in mind were not the helpful small reconnaissance ones that the army would use, but supersonic ones carrying one or two air-to-air missiles, that would complement our SU-37s at lower cost, or subsonic ones for use against ground or naval targets. These would take of the from and land at runways, or could be carried under the wing of a transport or bomber plane and be launched from the air. I know other countries don't have these yet, but it should be possible with current technology. They would be part of the airforce.

I signed the contract for SU-37. These planes are already flying, not some untested design.

The disadvantage of a piloted fighter is that the pilot can only sustain about 9 g's, while a UAV doesn't have that limit, plus it has to have a cockpit and ejection seat. The disadvatage is no pilot on board, so decisions are made remotely. I don't see why it would me impossible, but I would not start with production. We need design and a prototype which we would put through extensive tests.

A message arrives from the President's wireless e-mail
Per MDIS,

I just spoke with ENDTech CEO. He doesn't yet have order for Hydra armored infantry transport vehicles. Please give him the order for the amount needed to replace the M-113s we have now.

Regards,

After an exchange of messages about the Hydra order, the President calls
"Frans, we don't need the final number right away, just something to get them started. The Tilly plan had in mind 54 Hydra IFV for the Marines. In the army it was one per squad plus 4 more per company for 20 or 21 per company depending on whether the company commander uses one or not as his command vehicle. That plan gave them to the MP's as well. For the three divisions that is about 2,520 Hydras for the army. We are in no hurry, so don't bother with double shifts or overtime. The production line comfortably handled 15 tanks per month, so whatever the equivalent production rate would be for these infantry fighting vehicles would be good. If that were 20 to 25 per month, then the production would run would go for at least 100 months, but start with a terms' production and let our successors determine whether they want to continue this or shift strategy. We certainly need something to replace the oldests M-113s, but whether we need this size of army or something one-third smaller is yet to be determined."

I remember reading that our artillery was getting quite old as well, something about worn barrels reducing accuracy, increasing the likelihood of 'friendly-fire' casualties. It would be great if you could look into that, and come up with a plan. Also, I wanted to open 'research stations' in the Turks and Caicos as well as somewhere on the nearest African coast. The Brits have okayed us doing so on their islands, we just have to find a suitable site, where we could build a runway, and that would have some access to shipping. I haven't yet negotiated with any African nations, as I don't know whether it would be Morocco or Mauretania. If you could arrange to have someone scout out sites for both of these, it would be appreciated. I had asked former Admiral Tulp to do it, while he was on administrative leave before his court martial started, but I guess he didn't have time. The time frame for the one in the Turks & Caicos is much more pressing.

Perhaps with the arms embargo by Europe and the US, is Australia exempt? Perhaps we and a neutral nation could agree to have the other nation buy what we cannot, and sell it to us at a lucrative profit.

(OOC: How do I look into these situations?)

Australia is actually part of Britain (Gemenebest). I don't know if they have ownmade weapons. If so, and the embargo does not count for that country, we can initiate the deal.

Neither Australia, nor any other reputable country would buy arms from the US or Europe and sell them to us. That would damage their reputation and perhaps get them on the embargos as well. Australia could sell us arms that they manufacture, but like the MDIS, I am not familiar with what they make. On the other hand, they might decide to follow the US-European arms embargo, and not sell us anything. For the moment, I think it is easiest to buy from the Russians if we can't make it ourselves more cheaply, unless there is some special Australian weapon that we need, like a top-secret stealth boomerang.

Hapsburg returns to the room, with a large brown folder:

"Pers, due to the rumors of corruption in this department, and the wish to pursue another pastime, I am handing in my resignation as Deputy MDIS."

Per Hapsburg, that is perfectly understandable. You have done a good job as Deputy MDIS. I wish to thank you for that. It shows you have the potential for a larger role in government. For obvious reasons, I may need to reshuffle my cabinet. I would appreciate it you would stop by the Diamond Office, so we could discuss things.
