So I was messing around with France last night and managed to turn them into a Noble Republic around 1490. I think I've never played a republic before so I'm not sure how much of a pain it is to keep RT up.

What would you say are the advantages of Republics? I like to play humanist and micromanage my BT to get as many cultures accepted as possible.

You have control over your monarch point generation, you can't get junk events like Peasants' War or Aspiration for Liberty, and you can't have a regency council. You also don't take stab hits when new rulers come into power, unless the previous one died in combat.

The best selling point of republics is that they are a nice change of pace, at least if you play Monarchies 90% of the time like I do.

Something I like to do is take a big colonial power, rush to create a nice colonial state in the Caribbean as early as possible, and then switch to that and play there. These are Republics, and it's lots of fun to try to get most of the Americas under your boot as you plan your revolution against Spain, and perhaps an eventual invasion of the old world.

Benefits of being a republic:
-Greater control over ruler's stats, you never get a bad ruler.
-Republics suffer lower negatives for wrong cultures.
-No stability loss on ruler change.
-Can access Plutocratic ideas.
-Can't end up as a junior member in a PU.
-Use republic tradition instead of legitimacy, which doesn't jump around on succession.
-Can never lack a valid heir or have pretender revolts on succession.

Benefits of being a monarchy:
-Can get personal unions over other monarchies.
-Can get royal marriages.
-Can (randomly) get extremely good ruler stats which are much better then elected rulers.
-Can take aristocratic ideas.
-Legitimacy gives better benefits then republic tradition.
-Can get relation bonuses with other monarchies for sharing a dynasty.

Its really about the monarch points. Combined with national focus you can do pretty awesome things.
And if you find your lagging behind you just keep electing the same guy for a while. Fairly easy to manage the republic authority.

In terms of the general quality of administration, republics are a superior form of government to monarchy. This is why republics can easily degenerate into monarchies by trashing their RT, but monarchies cannot easily elevate themselves to republics, even if their legitimacy is zero (people in this situation don't believe in your king, but they still want some kind of king). You can also think of Republics as a high-energy state and monarchies as a low-energy state - decaying from republic to monarchy is a bad thing in the long run, but in the short run a lot of 'energy' is released in the form of bonus monarch points, and as a result you can accomplish some spectacular things on the way down.

The main weakness of Republics are that they can end up with high stability costs due to RT, they don't have the diprep bonus that comes with high legitimacy, they can't become Holy Roman Emperor and they can't play the PU game. But if you don't care about HRE/PUs and you take the right ideas, none of these is a major problem.

Your RT will usually drift along at a medium level, because you want to re-elect reasonably often, but also you want the events that give +25RT (I think they only trigger when your RT is somewhat low). It's not hard to manage your RT, but you do have to be sensible about it, especially with the frequent events that will encourage you to sacrifice your precious liberty in return for some one-off comforts. Dipping into dictatorship is risky (you could degenerate into a monarchy) but potentially quite profitable if you have a youngish ruler who has been re-elected a few times. Anything that gives you more RT is very valuable, as it will allow you to re-elect more frequently.

Noble Republic is pretty weak as republics go. You're better off with a government that has a short election cycle, because shorter cycles mean lower re-election costs and more chances to upgrade your president before he dies of old age. Oligarchic is better, and then you may or may not want to switch to Administrative. In the late game, you'll definitely want to switch to Constitutional, unless you somehow manage to become a Revolutionary republic.

Thank you for the replies.

I was puzzled to see my Aristocratic ideas didn't change into pluto when I chose Oligarchic republic though. Will they change once i switch to Administrative republic?
