I'm playing a 867 start as the Romans and I'm curious as to when the Seljuks might appear and what conditions need to be necessary for them to appear and basically wreck shiz in the middle east. Its about 930 and the still Abbasids provide a decent challenge if you make them a lucky ruler so that they don't immediately collapse but I'm just curious if/when the Turks will come steamrolling their way through the area?

Seljuk can appear in the court of a ruler (duke or higher) of the Altaic culture group (less likely if the ruler is Turkish or Turkmen) at any time from 960 through 979. He'll launch his invasion two years after he spawns.

So I should sit around and wait for him? (which is okay) I know there will be an event message letting me know he spawns I just know I had a problem in a version probably a year ago or so where he would just never have successes and I never got the challenge of fighting him, has that more or less been fixed? I'd like to actually lose to an overwhelming enemy in game in the for of the turks. I'm trying to play at least historically but prevent my eventual downfall in the end:p

In my most recent campaign, at least, the Seljuk Empire seemed to do well (until it got crushed by the Mongols). It expanded eastward and northward rather than westward, however.

Hopefully they'll be a little more ambitious this time around. My goal is to heal the schism then abandon the west and recreate Alexanders Empire in the east, I've just never had a real challenge from the game even when playing on the hardest difficulty.

Interesting ambition.

Seljuk is hit-or-miss. I plan to rewrite he and a few other representative historical invaders' events & CBs in the relatively near future for more bang, though. The vanilla implementations are very fragile (can be easily derailed by random stuff), and they're not very conducive to helping the invader AI be effective at, well, invading. As you may know, I already wrote a custom Mongol Invasion pseudo-AI in EMF which was wildly successful, but Seljuk will require a different approach since he correctly lacks a massive Mongol horde. ;)

Difficulty tip: don't allow yourself to do what the AI is not allowed to do. Namely, don't pause the game to think or perform basic tasks. Only pause the game when it's critical that you complete a bunch of micromanagement in a very short timespan. Even then, limit your pause length as much as possible: pretend other players are waiting for you to unpause before they can stop twiddling their thumbs and play again. [This is why multiplayer is great...]

Question about the Seljuks: how many event troops do they get in the later dates, like Stamford Bridge or William the Conqueror? I've managed to wipe them all out in the first war, yet the next time we fight they get even more. It's only happened twice, but it was frustrating to see them suddenly raise up tens of thousands of additional troops for free on top of their huge natural levies and wide mercenary base.

Also, why doesn't the death of Alp Arslan in the Invasion of Armenia drive the Seljuks into chaos? Malik Shah is still a minor at the time, and his uncle Qavurt should try to take the throne when Arslan dies, not to mention the vast number of powerful vassals that should want independence.
