No, I'll trade you 10 ducats for your cats. :D

And Yoghurt, I don't mind if you hijack my thread, all I wonder is how you got S. W. as an abbreviation for Snow King...... :D

Besides, I need the Iron, for the age of ****-y monarchs, so I stay ahead of the Christians.

And at the rate I'm going, I'll own the Brandenburg CoT by the end of the game......

I.A., yeah right, what a rippoff!

Chapter VII: Age of the stupid armies

1535-1540:
Well, I was planning on crushing Hungary, but the truce was lasting too long! So I bumble along, making RM's, giving gifts, exchanging maps, And Ibraim is dead. Oh what an exciting and happy 5 years!

1540-1545:
Well, I get around to DoW-ing Hungary, but I can't stop their allies. Seemingly every army is getting defeated by inferior forces, despite the fact that I'm investing most of my resources into land tech! Even Sulyman is defeated with his 50 army by a 25!

Then
Moldavia
Venice
Modena
Uzbekistan
Ragusa
Georgia
Declare war, and I have no diplomats! Hungary offers a WP, I accept. Venice's army defeats my superior one, and they offer a WP, which we gladly accept. Even the inferior Uzbeks defeat my, admittedly, smaller army and annihilate it!

Some how most peace's get lost in the records, and I believe they are white peace's. However, by the end of it I am so frustrated that I say, to heck with "no BB", and annexed Ragusa and the Knights. At the end, I hear the Dutch revolts have begun.....

O.O.C. This is terrible! For some reason my superior LT (yes I'm sure!) Armies are defeated, and 190,000 men keep sieging Pest! I've been building massive armies for another war, but they don't seem to help.

Does anyone know how to remedy this?

Your land tech is superior (I assume you checked the save files to verify?) but by how much?

The way the combat works, you hit certain key tech levels and gain more dramatic bonuses, while at other levels the gains might be minimal or might only apply to certain units (like artillery...) So unless you've crossed one of those thresholds and your enemy hasn't, don't expect to walk all over him...

Several things to check:

Are you attacking across rivers?

Are you trying to rely heavily on cavalry in anything but flat (plains) terrain?

Are you relying too heavily on infantry in the plains?

Are your enemies using better leaders? (Note that each country has different default leader stats, so even your default leaders can be significantly worse than someone else's.)

Are you attacking before your troops have recovered full morale?

Are you at 100% land maintenance? (for at least the three months prior to the battle)

Is your enemy funneling more than one stack of units into the fight? (The way morale gets averaged across units, this is potentially invaluable to the army that does it, regarless of the total number of soldiers involved...)

Is your overall land tech (and morale) still low? At lower levels, morale can be broken very quickly, even when you have a"superior" force.

Then some larger strategic advice:

(1) Why are you trying to engage the enemy armies? It is far easier (especially when you aren't a one-province nation) to go around them. If you play smart, you can take their provinces faster than they can take yours, and with less attrition. (That does require some fortification on your part...). Once you're ahead, you can make a reasonably advantageous peace.

(2) Never use your last diplomat unless it's an emergency of enormous proportions. That goes double for non-catholics who don't get so many diplomats to begin with. Ideally I like to begin a big war with at least 2 or 3 remaining (after the one I used up to DOW). Learning to conserve diplomats and get the most out of each one is a huge part of the game.

My land tech is 7, Austria's is 5,

1. I don't think so, not most of the time, in fact, my most succesful army in the hungarian war crossed the Danube...

2. No, I hardly build any cav. because i'm mostly involved in sieges.

3. I'll check.

4. Same as above.

5. Yes.

6. mostly I'm attacking him, so he can't

7. My morale is in the very strong range always before I attack.

8. They are in key provinces.

9. So I learned....

Re: enemy armies in key provinces. If you leave a route open into your own lands, the enemy will usually go on the offensive and move those armies out of your way. Unless they have nowhere to go, the AI doesn't usually have his armies sit at home during a war...

What are those key levels?

Doh! I knew someone would ask that!

I posted something about this to Citizen Paul's Persian AAR a few weeks ago...

I like the tech tables at EUProvince for an understanding of what different tech levels give you.

If I read the land chart correctly, here's a few early key points:

  • morale increases at levels 1,2,3, 8, 12, 20, 29, 36, and 43
  • Cavalry doesn't get better at all (except in morale) until level 15, and even after that only gets better rather slowly
  • Infantry gets its first (pathetic) firepower at level 5--before that you have no fire phase (unless you've got cannon along, I suppose) at all.
  • After gradual small improvements, infantry stays essentially unchanged (again except for morale) from level 13 until you hit level level 22. According to the historical estimates, that's about a 45 year period!

In case any ones wondering, I'm moving on to a new AAR, but I will return to good old Turkey in about a half a week to a week.

Thank you for the attention and replies you been giving this.

Well, off to Bavaria! :)

I live in the far, far, North, so that won't likely happen too soon... :D
