I can't help thinking this is a really stupid n00by type question, but I can't find the answer anywhere...

Say you have 5 units in a stack in a province represented as counters, how do you pick out your 3 favourites (say if you want to create a Corps)? It's easy enough to do with sprites as you highlight the stack then click on the individual little lines (representing strength), holding down shift at the same time.

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know. It went so far as to me switching back to sprites every now and then, when I need to do some reorganization.

I mean, iirc it's easy enough for land armies. You can select all of them by clicking and dragging over them, and then removing the ones you don't want by shift-(or was it ctrl?)clicking them. That can also be done when there's only air divisions in a province. What I'm looking for is a solution for provinces with both land and air divisions, as then you can only drag-select the former, but not the latter.

You didn't explain it fully, but I went back, had a look, and figured it out. In short, you use the same technique as with Sprites, but this time you click on the province, then hold shift and click on the top of the bar of the units you don't want in the information panel on the left.

As to your problem re mix units in the province - don't know.

I may be mistaken, but if you hold down CTRL button and left click on the units you don't want, you will end up with the units that you wish to merge.

As for picking Air units in a province where there is land units as well, the procedure will be to pick 1 air unit, press down the SHIFT button (or it may be the CTRL, can't remember), then left click and drag mouse pointer over that province. It will select all of the air units in that province.

Works! Hardly intuitive, but it works - thanks!

How did you find out about it - it's not in the manual or a wiki (AFAIK)?

When selecting units, it's always the shift button. Ctrl is used for giving orders.

I don't think it's in the manual, perhaps it's somewhere in the wiki, but it's something that most players either found out by accident (usually after a long while) or heard about on the forums.

By reading the threads regularly. You pick up lots of tips that way. Been playing HOI since the first version release and read about this tip only two months ago!

I've tried what was posted here, and in short I'm back to square one.

When I've got both land and air units in one province, then apparently the only way of viewing them all is by selecting said province. Regardless of whether I ctrl- or shift-click on a unit bar, it selects said unit instead of unselecting/excluding it from the group.

Selecting just the land units works intuitively, by dragging a box around them. When I do that in the case I'm describing, the only units that get selected are the land ones.

So either I'm a little slow today and can't figure it out, or the only way to merge air squadrons in a province containing land armies is to go back to sprites and do it on them.

When there are multiple differing types of units in a province..i.e. land, air and naval, the best way to select the units other than land is to click on the airbase for air and the naval base for naval. If you are zoomed way out, you may not be able to do this, so just zoom in (+/- for zoom in and out). When you zoom in enough, the airbase should be seperated from the land units and you can click on that by itself, and it will give you the air units only. You can likewise do this for the naval units.

Once you bring up the whole list of air/naval units, you can shift-left mouse click on the units you dont want...and then combine the units that are left. Remember, you can not combine more than 4 air units...doesnt matter if the air commander can command more than 4 units.

You also need to make sure the air units are still at the airbase...because they may be out on a mission, although they are based there. You cant do adjustments when they are out on a missions.

Correct. However, there's really no need - no use - to select air, naval and ground units at the same time, since you can't do anything with them. In order to select all units of the same type, select one of them, hold shift and drag a box around the province.

This, by the way, has no limits, so you can select one air unit and drag a box around the whole country, selecting all of your air units and allowing you to easily rebase all of them for reorganisation.

Correct. Land units are prioritised. Bypass this by selecting one unit of the type you want.

Nah, just mess around a little and you'll eventually get the hang of it.

As I said, I'm either to slow for this stuff today and thus can't tell my ass from a hole in the ground, or we're playing two different games at this point: there is no whole list of air units once I click on the airbase. All I get is the option of cycling through them, and holding shift doesn't change anything.

I can work around this by either deploying air units in provinces with no land units, or by briefly switching to sprites and the ORG bar of each unit to help me select who I want. That being said, it's a pain in the ass, and I can't believe that there's no better way around this.

Draigh said:

Right now, I don't see how. I'm convinced that I'm missing something here, plus I'm tired of working around this selection-related problem I'm having.

Sorry, I forgot to outline a step (number 2 below).

1. Click on the airbase. You should now have an air unit showup in the province.
2. Draw a box around the air unit to bring up the list of all air units there.
3. Eliminate the air units you are not interested in with Shift-Left click
4. Combine the units that are left into one unit.

The reason you have to zoom in is that the box needs to be around the air unit only.

Click on the Airbase to select ANY Air unit in the province. Now hold down <Shift> and click-drag around the stack. Since you are holding <Shift> while you do it, ONLY Air units... and ALL the Air units... will get selected. Now use <Shift>-click in the left side-bar to de-select un-wanted Air units.
