Select Ruler, Click 'Play', CK2 Slows Then Freezes!

I bought CK2 on Steam. I only have Old Gods and Republic for DLC.
I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting, installing in different locations, wiping my cache...but I just can't get singleplayer to work. Multi works okay.

After selecting my ruler, I click 'Play', then the various UI elements onscreen begin to recede off the edges. But they go super slowly. It takes seconds for each pixel to change. Then if I wait long enough, the map doesn't zoom down, and the game does not start. Without the 'back' button available I have to force quit, but before it disappears the back button remains functional.

It's hard to see why MP would work but SP wouldn't, to be honest, the core game is the same of course.

Please try installing:

First: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555

After that: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328

Then: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
(If that doesn't do anything then http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 )

Then: visit the Windows Update site and allow it to apply all .NET updates/patches it wants to, for all .NET versions.

Then right-click on ck2.exe and ck2game.exe and set them to run as the Admin user.
And then check if you can run the game after that.

If still not, Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the "Sound devices" section for brevity), settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

Trying to install any of those told me that I already had newer versions. Tried running in admin mode, strangely that allowed it to work once, now it's not working again, even though I'm running it in admin mode every time now.
I'm not too encouraged, I'll give up on CK2 for a few patches then see if I have better luck

Your issue is not a known bug, so it's unlikely to be fixed in a game patch. If you could post the info I asked for in the last paragraph I'll try to help you further.
