Hi All Playing as Norse the succession laws make things a bit tricky.

So I was thinking of not marrying anyone who can have children is 35 years safe?

And then seducing anyone i can till I get some one with good stats and legitimize them. I have a few questions:-

1.When recognizing them as my own , this will not effect succession until I legitimize them is this correct? If so I dont see a massive problem with recognizing everyone?

2.In the past it seems I only get 1 kid per lover. Am I just unlucky? Or should I just love them and leave them?

3. Only seduce single ladies?

35 years is probably safe. If I recall correctly, though, they still have (very) low fertility at that point. I don't have access to game files so I can't check right now. Pretty sure it zeros out by 45, so if you want to be extra safe, go that route.

You can recognize them and they won't be up for succession until you legitimize them.

You should be able to get more than 1 kid per lover.

Seduce whomever you feel like, really, though I guess there's the risk that the husband will believe the child is his.

If you're going this route (and it's not a bad one) make sure to not take concubines either, because the children of concubines are not bastards.

I'd go for marrying women over the age of 45 instead, it's the age at which they become entirely barren. Keep concubines of that age as well for that extra prestige.

1. Nah, I don't believe recognized bastard affect the succession.

2. You're simply being unlucky, you should keep them as lovers.

3. It removes the possibility of the husband thinking the child is his, and means you won't piss anyone (but your wife) off, so yeah, singles are better targets. Women married to courtiers should be open game though, especially if they have good congenital traits, and it can be worth seducing noblewomen who might give your child claims in the future.

This is how you game the system:
If you don't need more heirs (esp. for Gavelkind), then you should be marrying a woman age 45 or over purely for stats. It doesn't matter what their religion or culture is, or how much they hate you, because half of your spouse's stats get added to your own whether they like it or not. The wife might try assassinating you if she hates you, but I find they're never a threat, since your court usually sides with you if she's a different religion/culture anyways. Note: The age fertility restriction isn't as strict for men. Type charinfo in the console and you'll see fertility is still present within elderly men.

One cheap trick to Gavelkind is taking someone as a lover, banging out children, then when you finally get a child you like, legitimize them. Denounce children until you're happy. The reason you don't want to recognize everyone is because under Gavelkind succession, you don't want too many heirs, because your kingdom will become more fractured, as the titles get distributed evenly among your heirs.

Make sure you're married to a 45+ yr old woman when you take a lover, since that supposedly increases pregnancy chances for the wife and the lover, maybe because your character is more sexually active, but since the 45+ age wife is no longer fertile, that won't pertain to her. Take as many lovers and concubines as you can to keep rolling the dice on children with good inheritable traits. With lovers and concubines, their stats don't get added to your own, so focus on their inheritable traits only.

When seducing, I don't care if they're married or not. If they have good congenital traits, bang them. I don't care if I make a rival out of the husband. Sometimes it's a good thing, as I can Duel them and score free stats. Usually, the husband is in a far-off court, meaning his penalty to assassination plots is too diminished to be a threat due to the distance penalty, so I just shrug my shoulders and leave him as a rival. If the husband of the wife is in your court, make him a Jester, because why not!

They will only inherit if you legitimize them.

Looks like I'm a bit late to the party, but what the OP has there is a classic strategy for pagans or even Christians (especially with ultimogeniture).

Marry an older woman for her stats or even prestige, then seduce other women or use concubines in order to have your pick of heirs. Then just stop or set aside when you have the desired number of kids. If going for the seduction approach, then legitimize only who you need.
