sectors, outposts and influence

I saw several threads and tutorial videos across the internet that said, if I put outposts into sectors, they will stop draining my influence.
Just tried it, but it doesn't seem to work. What is wrong?

Lots of things have changed since the game's been released... I would avoid any guides or advice that come from sites or threads marked as older than October 2016.

This was considered an exploit, you still pay for the influence if it is in sectors. It was fixed in one of the very first few patches

The 1.5 Banks update has changed a lot of things... so I would always limit searches to within the past week or month to be sure to be getting accurate info.

Adding to this, go by the wiki; it is generally up to date, and, on top of that, it is pretty reliable about telling you when it is not up to date.
